Surface roughness profiles were measured from 19 joint samples using a laser scanner, and Joint Roughness Coefficient (JRC) values were calculated from 30 sections in each sample. Although JRC values varied with the location of the section, the average JRC values from any three sections provides an adequate representation of the average JRC value for the entire surface well. Direct shear tests were performed on nine joints reproduced using molds of real joints in samples of gypsum. The peak friction angles (${\phi}_p$) showed a linear relationship with the average JRC values, yielding the following relationship: ${\phi}_p=41.037+1.046JRC$. However, the shear strengths measured by direct shear tests differed from those calculated using Barton's criterion. The relationship between calculated from direct shear tests and JRC measured from joint surfaces is defined as $JRC_R=f{\cdot}JRC$, and the correction coefficient f is was calculated as $f=3.15JRC^{-0.5}$, as calculated by regression. A modified shear-strength criterion, is proposed using the correction coefficient, ${\tau}={\sigma}_n{\cdot}tan(3.15JRC^{0.5}{\bullet}{\log}_{10}\frac{JCS}{{\sigma}_n}+{\phi}_b)$. This criterion may be effective in calculating the shear strength of moderately weathered rock joints and highly weathered rock joints with low strength and ductile behavior.
In the present study, an improved design method was developed for the punching shear strength of interior slabcolumn connections and column footings with and without shear reinforcement. In the evaluation of the punching shear strength, the possible failure mechanisms of the connections and column footings were considered. The considered failures modes were inclined tensile cracking of concrete, yielding of shear re-bars, and concrete crushing of compression zone/strut. The punching shear applied to the concrete critical section was assumed to be resisted mainly by the compression zone. The punching shear strength of the concrete compression zone was evaluated based on the material failure criteria of the concrete subjected to the compressive normal stress and shear stress. For verification of the proposed design method, its prediction was compared with the existing test results. The result showed that the proposed method predicted the strengths of the test specimens better than the current design methods of the KCI code for both the shear reinforced and unreinforced cases.

This paper summarizes the results of a study which uses the recently developed Optical Profile Microscopy technique (Dove and Frost, 1996) as the basis for investigating the role of geomembrane surface roughness on the shear mechanism of geomembrane/geotextile interfaces. The alternative roughness parameters which consider the direction of shearing are described. These directional parameters are compared with the existing roughness parameters, and the relationship between these directional and non-directional parameters are investigated. Then, the relationship between interface shear strength and surface roughness quantified at the interface is investigated. The results show that interface friction can be quantitatively related to the surface roughness of the geomembrane. The peak and residual interface strengths increase dramatically through the use of textured geomembranes as opposed to smooth geomembranes. For the smooth geomembranes, the sliding of the geotextile is the main shear mechanism. For the textured geomembranes, the peak interface strength is mainly mobilized through the micro-texture of the geomembrane, however, the residual interface strength is primarily attributed to macro scale surface roughness which pulls out and breaks the filaments from the geotextile. The results of this study can be extended to the other interfaces such as joints in rock mass, and also can be used to provide a quantitative framework that can lead to a significantly improved basis for the selection and design of geotextiles and geomembranes in direct contact.
Large-scale direct shear tests were conducted in order to evaluate both the shear strength of soil itself and the interface shear strength between soil and woven geotextile. Two types of soil (sand and clay) with a woven geotextile were used in the experimental program. Total nine tests were conducted in this study. It has been found from the experimental results that the friction angle of sand itself were $30^{\circ}$. Interface friction angle between woven geotextile and sand showed $26^{\circ}$ indicating an efficiency of 87%. Similarly, interface friction angle between woven geotextile and clay showed $7.7^{\circ}$.

The coarse grained materials which is produced in the domestic stony mountains are used as principle materials in the construction sites such as dams, ports, pavement structures and etc. Despite using of various fields like this, There is few apparatuses to experiment these materials in the country. some design parameters of the structures until these days was used from the result of former research abroad. Hereupon, We have developed the large scale direct shear test apparatus and we conduct research in order to get a shear strength of the coarse grained materials from the domestic stony mountains in Kyuong-gi, Choong-chung and Kyoung-sang province. As results of the test, it was revealed that the internal friction was ranging from $38.6^{\circ}$ to $44.5^{\circ}$ and the cohesion was from $1.1kg/cm^2$ to $1.7kg/cm^2$ depending on the local rock conditions.
A series of direct shear tests were conducted to investigate the frictional properties of the interface between structures and the filling soil of Chongqing airport fourth stage expansion project. Two types of structures are investigated, one is low carbon steel and the other is the bedrock sampled from the site. The influence of soil water content, surface roughness and material types of structure were analyzed. The tests show that the interface friction and shear displacement curve has no softening stage and the curve shape is close to the Clough-Duncan hyperbola, while the soil is mainly shear contraction during testing. The interface frictional resistance and normal stress curve meets the Mohr-Coulomb criterion and the derived friction angle and frictional resistance of interface increase as surface roughness increases but is always lower than the internal friction angle and shear strength of soil respectively. When surface roughness is much larger than soil grain size, soil-structure interface is nearly shear surface in soil. In addition to the geometry of structural surface, the material types of structure also affects the performance of soil-structure interface. The wet interface frictional resistance will become lower than the natural one under specific conditions.
The purpose of this study was to measure and compare tensile and shear strength for 4 types of new direct-bonding brackets and same brackets after recycling and to evaluate the change of bracket slot width after recycling. Four types of new direct-bond brackets were bonded to recently extracted human premolar teeth and the tensile and shear strength was measured by Universal Testing Machine. The brackets were recycled by chemical process and the tensile and shear test was repeated. To evaluate the change of the bracket slot width, slot width was measured by the Topcon Universal Measuring Microscope before and after recycling. Following results were obtained: 1. There was no satistically significant difference between the tensile and shear strength of recycled brackets and those of new brackets. 2. In both new and recycled brackets, the tensile and shear strength of perforated base bracket was lower than those of photoetched, foilmesh and contou-lok mesh base brackets. (P<0.01) 3. There was no statistically significant difference in bonding strengths of control group bonded only once and two times. 4. There was no statistically significant difference in the change of the bracket slow width after recycling process. 5. Of the failure, the combination type (58%) in the tensile strength and the tooth adhesive interface (65%) in the shear strength was the most common type.

This study aims to derive the optimal condition that ensures the monolithicity of ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC), through the evaluation of bonding shear performance with respect to the time of cold joint occurrence during the placement. From the direct shear test, while the normalized bonding shear strength reduction of UHPC with the delay time of 15 minutes was the lowest at around 8%, a dramatic degradation of bonding shear performance was observed after 15 minutes. XRD analysis of the middle and surface sections was performed in order to analyze the composition of the thin film formed at the surface of UHPC, and as a result, the main ingredient appeared to be SiO2 from the XRD pattern of middle and surface sections, which is believed to be the result of the rising of SiO2-based filler, used as anadmixture in this study, toward the surface, due to its low specific gravity.

Multi-layered geotextile tubes may have problems on its stability when used as cofferdam. This study presents the shear strength characteristics at the interface between geotextiles and a cementitious binder material to improve the stability of the multi-layered geotextile tubes. In this study, two different types of geotextiles are used. After mixing with a rapid setting cement, fly ash, sand, accelerator, and water, the cementitious binder material is prepared at the interface between two geotextile samples and cured under water for a desired period. The specimen is placed on upper and lower direct shear boxes by using clamping systems. A series of direct shear tests for two different geotextiles are performed along the curing time under three vertical stresses. Experimental results show that the shear strength at the interface between the cementitious binder material and geotextiles is greater than that at the interface between two geotextiles. For two types of geotextiles, apparent cohesion occurs at the interface between the cementitious binder material and geotextiles. In addition, the friction angles for any curing time are improved, compared to the interface between two geotextiles. The cementitious binder material suggested for the interface between two geotextiles may be useful for the reinforcement of multi-layered geotextile tubes.
The scale effect of specimens on the shear behavior of joints is studied by performing direct shear tests on six different sizes in Granite. The peak and residual shear stress, shear displacement, shear stiffness, and dilation angle are measured with the different normal stress(0.29~2.65MPa) and roughness parameters. It is also shown that both the joint roughness coefficient(JRC) and the joint compression strength(JCS) reduce with increasing joint length. A series of shear tests show about 56~67% reduction in peak shear stress, and about 18~44% in residual shear stress, respectively as the contact area of joint increases from 12.25 to $361cm^2$. Also the variation of dilation angle is $27^{\circ}$ at normal stress of 0.29 MPa and $6^{\circ}$ at normal stress of 2.65 MPa, respectively. The envelopes considering scale effect for JRC are made for the peak shear strength of rock joint in comparison with the Barton's equation.
