  • This work demonstrates arc generation and anodic film formation behaviors on Al1050 alloy during PEO (plasma electrolytic oxidation) treatment under a constant direct current in an alkaline electrolyte containing silicate, carbonate and borate ions. Only one big arc more than 2 mm diameter was generated first at the edges and it was moving on the fresh surface or staying occasionally at the edges, resulting in the local burning due to generation of an extremely big orange colored arc at the edges. Central region of the flat surface was not fully covered with PEO films even after sufficiently long treatment time because of the local burning problem. The anodic oxides formed on the flat surface by arcing once were found to consist of a number of small oxide nodules with spherical shape of $3{\sim}6{\mu}m$ size and irregular shapes of about $5{\sim}10{\mu}m$ width and $10{\sim}20{\mu}m$ length. The anodic oxide nodules showed uniform thickness of about $3{\mu}m$ and rounded edges. These experimental results suggest that one big arc observed on the specimen surface under the application of a constant direct current is composed of a number of small micro-arcs less than $20{\mu}m$ size.

  • Persulfates (i.e., peroxymonosulfate and peroxydisulfate) are capable of oxidizing a wide range of organic compounds via direct reactions, as well as by indirect reactions by the radical intermediates. In aqueous solution, persulfates undergo self-decomposition, which is accelerated by thermal, photochemical and metal-catalyzed methods, which usually involve the generation of various radical species. The chemistry of persulfates has been studied since the early twentieth century. However, its environmental application has recently gained attention, as persulfates show promise in in situ chemical oxidation (ISCO) for soil and groundwater remediation. Persulfates are known to have both reactivity and persistence in the subsurface, which can provide advantages over other oxidants inclined toward either of the two properties. Besides the ISCO applications, recent studies have shown that the persulfate oxidation also has the potential for wastewater treatment and disinfection. This article reviews the chemistry regarding the hydrolysis, photolysis and catalysis of persulfates and the reactions of persulfates with organic compounds in aqueous solution. This article is intended to provide insight into interpreting the behaviors of the contaminant oxidation by persulfates, as well as developing new persulfate-based oxidation technologies.

  • In this work, a ruthenium dioxide electrode has been prepared by thermal decomposition at 400 ℃ then used for the oxidation of commercial amoxicillin. The physical characterization showed that RuO2 electrode presents a mud cracked structure. Its electrochemical characterization has revealed an increase of the voltammetric charge in acid electrolyte compared to neutral electrolyte indicating the importance of protons in its surface redox processes. The voltammetric study of the oxidation of amoxicillin has been investigated. It has been obtained that the oxidation of amoxicillin is controlled by both adsorption and diffusion processes. Moreover, the oxidation of amoxicillin occurs via direct and indirect processes in free or electrolyte containing chlorides. Through preparative electrolysis, enhancement of amoxicillin oxidation was observed in the presence of chloride where the amoxicillin degradation yield reached more than 50 % compared to less than 5% in the absence of chlorides. Spectrophotometric investigations have revealed the degradation of intermediates absorbing at 350 nm.

  • Pt nanoparticle catalysts incorporated on $RuO_2$ nanowire support were successfully synthesized and their electrochemical properties, such as methanol electro-oxidation and electrochemically active surface (EAS) area, were demonstrated for direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs). After fabricating $RuO_2$ nanowire support via an electrospinning method, two different types of incorporated Pt nanoparticle electrocatalysts were prepared using a precipitation method via the reaction with $NaBH_4$ as a reducing agent. One electrocatalyst was 20 wt% Pt/$RuO_2$, and the other was 40 wt% Pt/$RuO_2$. The structural and electrochemical properties of the Pt nanoparticle electrocatalysts incorporated on electrospun $RuO_2$ nanowire support were investigated using a bright field transmission electron microscopy (bright field TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and cyclic voltammetry. The bright field TEM, XRD, and XPS results indicate that Pt nanoparticle electrocatalysts with sizes of approximately 2-4 nm were well incorporated on the electrospun $RuO_2$ nanowire support with a diameter of approximately 50 nm. The cyclic voltammetry results showed that the Pt nanoparticle catalysts incorporated on the electrospun $RuO_2$ nanowire support give superior catalytic activity in the methanol electro-oxidation and a higher electrochemically active surface (EAS) area when compared with the electrospun Pt nanowire electrocatalysts without the $RuO_2$ nanowire support. Therefore, the Pt nanoparticle catalysts incorporated on the electrospun $RuO_2$ nanowire support could be a promising electrode for direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs).

  • Anodization is an electrochemical process that electrochemically converts a metal surface into an oxide layer, resulting in enhanced corrosion resistance, wear resistance, and improved aesthetic appearance. Local anodization, also known as selective anodization, is a modified process that enables specific regions or patterns on the metal surface to undergo anodization instead of the entire surface. Several methods have been attempted to produce oxide layers via localized anodic oxidation, such as using a mask or pre-patterned substrate. However, these methods are often intricate, time-consuming, and costly. Conversely, the direct writing or patterning approach is a more straightforward and efficient way to fabricate the oxide layers. This review paper intends to enhance our comprehension of local anodization and its potential applications in various fields, including the development of nanotechnologies. The application of anodization is promising in surface engineering, where the anodic oxide layer serves as a protective coating for metals or modifies the surface properties of materials. Furthermore, anodic oxidation can create micro- and nano-scale patterns on metal surfaces. Overall, the development of efficient and cost-effective anodic oxidation methods is essential for the advancement of various industries and technologies.

  • An experimental study was conducted to investigate behavior of surface oxidation with steel type. The excess entalphy combustion in porous media system was applied to implement the direct radiation heating system. The surface oxidation thickness (SOT) in fuel-lean condition was thicker than the SOT in fuel-rich. Also, the SOT was increased by increasing residence time. Detailed explanations were given by SEM and EDS analysis.

  • Stainless steels are alloy steels with a nominal chromium content of at least 11 percent, with other alloy additions. The stainlessness and corrosion resistance of these alloy steels are attributed to the presence of a passive oxide film on the surface. When exposed to conditions like Resistance Spot Welding (RSW) process that remove the passive oxide film, stainless steels are subject to corrosive attack. And exposure to elevated temperatures causes oxidation (discoloration) of areas around indentation in Spot welding. In this paper, deal with the effect of shielding gas (Ar) preventing the corrosion, oxidation of stainless steel. And find the optimal shielding gas flow rate. In addition, suggest effective purging method for direct/indirect spot welding process.

  • The Direct Quadrature Method of Moments (DQMOM) has been presented for the solution of population balance equation in the wide range of the multi-phase flows. This method has the inherently interesting features which can be easily applied to the multi-inner variable equation. In addition, DQMOM is capable of easily coupling the gas phase with the discrete phases while it requires the relatively low computational cost. Soot inception, subsequent aggregation, surface growth and oxidation are described through a population balance model solved with the DQMOM for soot formation. This approach is also able to represent the evolution of the soot particle size distribution. The turbulence-chemistry interaction is represented by the laminar flamelet model together with the presumed PDF approach and the spherical harmonic P-1 approximation is adopted to account for the radiative heat transfer.
