  • Objectives: Direct-reading instrument(Photoionization detectors, PID) and quantitative analysis using active type air sampling (Gas chromatography-flame ionization detector, GC-FID) were tested to evaluate their ability to detect volatile organic compounds(VOCs) in a semiconductor manufacturing plant. Methods: The organic compounds used were acetone and ethanol which are normally used as cleaning solutions in the semiconductor manufacturing. The evaluation was based on the preparation of test solutions of known acetone and ethanol concentration in a chamber($600{\times}600{\times}1150mm$). Samples were prepared that would be equivalent to 5~100 ppm for acetone and 10~ 200 ppm ethanol. GC-FID and PID were evaluated simultaneously. Quantitative analysis was performed after sampling and the direct-reading instrument was checked using real-time data logging. Results: Positive correlations between PID and GC-FID were found for acetone and ethanol at 0.04~2.4% for acetone(TLV: 500 ppm) and 0.1~8.3% for ethanol(TLV: 1000 ppm). When the sampling time was 15 min, concentration of test solution was the most similar between measurement methods. However, the longer the sampling time, the less similar the results. PID and GC-FID had similar exposure patterns. Conclusions: The results indicate that PID and GC-FID have similar exposure pattern and positive correlation for detection of acetone and ethanol. Therefore, PID can be used for exposure monitoring for VOCs in the semiconductor manufacturing industry. This study has significance in that it validates measuring occupational exposure using a portable device.

  • In this paper, an advanced torque control scheme of SRM using DITC(Direct Instantaneous Torque Control) and PWM(pulse width modulation) is presented. Different from conventional DITC method, proposed method uses one or two switching modes at every sampling time, instead of only one switching mode. The duty ratio of the phase switch is regulated according to the torque error and simple control rules of DITC. Moreover the sampling time of control can be extended, which allows implementation on low cost micro-controllers. A simple calculation of PWM can assure a constant switching frequency with an excellent control performance. The proposed control method is verified by the simulations and experimental results.

  • Bandpass sampling (BPS) techniques for the direct down-conversion of RF bandpass signals have become an essential technique for software defined radio (SDR), due to their advantage of minimizing the radio frequency (RF) front-end hardware dependency. This paper proposes an algorithm for finding the minimum BPS frequency for simultaneously down-converting multiple RF signals through full permutation over all the valid sampling ranges found for the multiple RF signals. We also present a scheme for reducing the computational complexity resulting from the large scale of the purmutation calculation involved in searching for the minimum BPS frequency. In addition, we investigate the BPS frequency allowing for the guard-band between adajacent down-converted signals, which help lessen the severe requirements in practical implementations. The performance of the proposed method is compared with those of other pre-reported methods to prove its effectiveness.

  • Sampling techniques is very important in digital elevation model. There are scanning and digitizing method of sampling techniques. This study is limited in digitizing method. Continous sampling method use contour lines as same entity and grid method is a direct reading of sample elevation in each grid. Triangulated irregular method is needed to identity topographical lines to sample elevation data. As a results, authors know that continous sampling method has economic in input system and triangulated irregular method has a small memory size.

  • Most attempts at Bayesian analysis of neural networks involve hierarchical modeling. We believe that similar results can be obtained with simpler models that require less computational effort, as long as appropriate restrictions are placed on parameters in order to ensure propriety of posterior distributions. In particular, we adopt a model first introduced by Lee (1999) that utilizes an improper prior for all parameters. Straightforward Gibbs sampling is possible, with the exception of the bias parameters, which are embedded in nonlinear sigmoidal functions. In addition to the problems posed by nonlinearity, direct sampling from the posterior distributions of the bias parameters is compounded due to the duplication of hidden nodes, which is a source of multimodality. In this regard, we focus on sampling from the marginal posterior distribution of the bias parameters with Markov chain Monte Carlo methods that combine traditional Metropolis sampling with a slice sampler described by Neal (1997, 2001). The methods are illustrated with data examples that are largely confined to the analysis of nonparametric regression models.

  • The monitoring methods for volcanic gases are divided into remote sensing and direct gas sampling approaches. In the remote sensing approach, COSPEC and Li-COR are used to measure $SO_2$ and $CO_2$, respectively, with FT-IR for detection of a range of volcanic gases. However, the remote sensing approach is not applicable to Mt. Baegdu, where the atmospheric contents of volcanic gases are very low as a result of the strong interaction of volcanic gases with the nearby surface water and groundwater. On the other hand, the direct gas sampling approach involves the collection of volcanic gases from volcanic vents or fumaroles and the subsequent laboratory analysis, thus making it possible to measure even very low levels of volcanic gases. The direct sampling approach can be subdivided into the evacuated bottle method and the flow-through bottle method. In applying both methods, sampling bottles typically contain reaction media to trap specific volcanic gases. For example, NaOH solution(Giggenbach bottle), $NH_4OH$ solution, and acid condensates have been experimented for volcanic gas sampling. Once taken from vents and fumaroles, the samples of volcanic gases are pretreated and subsequently analyzed for volcanic gases using GC, IC, HPLC, titrimetry, TOC-IC, or ICP-MS. Recently, there has been the increasing number of evidences on the potential volcanic activity of Mt. Baegdu. However, little technical development has been made for the sampling and analysis of volcanic gases in Korea. In the present work, we reviewed various volcanic gas monitoring methods, and provided the detailed information on the monitoring methods applied to Mt. Baegdu.

  • Several adaptive and direct slicing methods have been developed to make the slice data for RP parts with better accuracy and speed. This research deals with a new adaptive slicing algorithm that shows drastic improvement in computing time for calculating the slices of a part. First, it uses less number of sampling points fur each slice in determining the thickness of the next slice. Secondly, the idea of contour map is utilized to determine the optimal sampling point on each slice. Thirdly, the calculation efficiency is further improved by introducing vertical character lines of the given part. The results in terms of accuracy and speed are compared with the existing methods.

  • Here an efficient regression type estimator for a stratified population mean is proposed under the two-phase sampling scheme. While constructing the proposed estimator, it is assumed that the first auxiliary variable x is directly and highly correlated with the study variable y, and the second auxiliary variable z is directly and highly correlated with the first auxiliary variable x. However the variable z is not directly correlated with the variable y, but they are just correlated with each other only due to their direct and high correlation with the variable x. The proposed regression type estimator is found to be always more efficient than the existing estimators defined under the same situation.

  • In successive sampling on two occasions the problem of estimating a finite population quantile has been considered. The theory developed aims at providing the optimum estimates by combining (i) three double sampling estimators viz. ratio-type, product-type and regression-type, from the matched portion of the sample and (ii) a simple quantile based on a random sample from the unmatched portion of the sample on the second occasion. The approximate variance formulae of the suggested estimators have been obtained. Optimal matching fraction is discussed. A simulation study is carried out in order to compare the three estimators and direct estimator. It is found that the performance of the regression-type estimator is the best among all the estimators discussed here.
