This paper presents the effect of injection pressure on the atomization characteristics of high-pressure injector in a direct injection gasoline engine both experimentally and numerically. The atomization characteristics such as mean droplet size, mean velocity, and velocity distribution were measured by phase Doppler particle analyzer. The spray development, spray penetration, and global spray structure were visualized using a laser sheet method. In order to investigate the atomization process in more detail, the calculations with the LISA-DDB hybrid model were performed. The results provide the effect of injection pressure on the macroscopic and microscopic behaviors such as spray development, spray penetration, mean droplet size, and mean velocity distribution. It is revealed that the accuracy of prediction is promoted by using the LISA-DDB hybrid breakup model, comparing to the original LISA model or TAB model alone. And the characteristics of the primary and secondary breakups have been investigated by numerical approach.

A new method of direct current motor drive, which requires neither shaft encoder nor speed estimator, is presented. The proposed scheme is based on decreasing current gap between a numerical model and an actual motor. By supplying the identical instantaneous voltage to both model and motor in the direction of reducing the current difference, the rotor approaches to the model speed, that is, reference value. The performance of direct current motor drives without speed sensor is generally poor at very low speed. However, in this system, it is possible to obtain good speed performance in the low speed range.

RCS effects of long-crested wave surfaces to marine targets are numerically analyzed using a 4-path model and a direct analysis method, developed based on physical optics and a combined method of physical optics/geometric optics, respectively. Reflectivity of long-crested wave surfaces is described with 'Fresnel reflection coefficients' The MPM(modified Pierson-Moskowitz) ocean spectrum is adopted to simulate long-crested waves in the direct analysis method. A numerical analysis of a benchmark model assures the validity of both methods. The direct analysis method is applied to the RCS calculation of electromagnetically large marine targets, which are vertically oriented or slanted to the long crested wave surfaces randomly generated with various significant wave heights. The long-crested wave surface much highly increases the RCS of the marine target, but those effects are decreased as the significant wave height grows up. At low elevation angle, the vertical model has entirely high RCS comparing slanted model, and the RCS of vertical flat plate is the highest on the calm sea surface, while those of slanted flat plates are the lowest on the calm sea surface. The RCS of marine targets on continuously-varying sea surface is more coherent at lower elevation angles, as well.

Various control algorithms have been proposed for the speed-sensorless control for an induction motor. These control schemes are mainly based on the speed feedback with the flux and speed estimations. This paper proposes another method for the speed-sensorless control for an induction motor. The proposed scheme is based on the torque and flux compensation without speed estimations, in which the same controlled stator voltage is applied to both the induction motor and the numerical model so that the differences between torques and fluxes of the model and the induction motor may be compelled to give access to zero. The results of experiment show the effectiveness of the scheme.
We present numerical results for inertialess elliptic particle suspensions in a Newtonian fluid subject to simple shear flow, using the sliding bi-periodic frame concept of Hwang et al. (2004) such that a particulate system with a small number of particles could represent a suspension system containing a large number of particles. We report the motion and configurational change of elliptic particles in simple shear flow and discuss the inter-relationship with the bulk shear stress behaviors through several example problems of a single, two-interacting and ten particle problems in a sliding bi-periodic frame. The main objective is to check the feasibility of the direct simulation method for understanding the relationship between the microstructural evolution and the bulk material behaviors.

Dynamic analysis of complex and large structures may be costly from a numerical point of view. For coupled vibroacoustic finite element models, the importance of reducing the size becomes obvious because the fluid degrees of freedom must be added to the structural ones. In this paper, a component mode synthesis method is proposed for large vibroacoustic interaction problems. This method couples fluid subdomains and dynamical substructuring of Craig and Bampton type. The acoustic formulation is written in terms of the velocity potential, which implies several advantages: coupled algebraic systems remain symmetric, and a potential formulation allows a direct extension of Craig and Bampton's method to acoustics. Those properties make the proposed method easy to implement in an existing finite element code because the local numerical treatment of substructures and fluid subdomains is undifferentiated. Test cases are then presented for axisymmetric geometries. Numerical results tend to prove the validity and the efficiency of the proposed method.
A CFD analysis for a thermal mixing experiment during steam jet discharge was performed to develop the analysis methodology for the thermal mixing between steam and subcooled water and to find the optimized numerical method. In the CFD analysis, the steam condensation phenomena by a direct contact was modelled by the so-called condensation region model. The comparison of the CFD results with the test data showed a good agreement as a whole, but a small temperature difference was locally found at some locations. However, the commercial CFD code of CFX4.4 together with the condensation region model can simulate the thermal mixing behaviour reasonably well when a sufficient number of mesh distribution and a proper numerical method are adopted

A direct differentiationmethod is presented for the shape design sensitivity analysis of axisymmeetric elastic solids. Based on the exisymmetric boundary integralequaiton formulation, a new boundary ntegral equatio for sensitivity analysis is derived by taking meterial derivative to the same integral identity that was used in the adjoint variable melthod. Numerical implementation is performed to show the applicaiton of the theoretical formulation. For a simple example with analytic solution, the sensitivities by present method are compared with analytic sensitivities. As an application to the shape optimization, an optimal shape of a gas turbine disc toinimize the weight under stress constraints is found by incorporating the sensitivity analysis algorithm in an optimizatio program.

This paper presents an improved group of energy functions reflecting generator damping effects for multi-machine power systems by using Center of Inertia (COI) formulation as an extension of the previous work. Since rotor angles at the Stable Equilibrium Point (SEP) of post-fault systems are generally calculated in COI, system transient energy can be found without assumption of infinite or slack bus, which is a crucial drawback of the absolute rotor angle frame approach. The developed energy functions have a structure preserving property with which it is very flexible to incorporate various models of power system components, especially various load and generator models. The proposed damping-reflected energy functions are applied to the Potential Energy Boundary Surface (PEBS) method, one of the direct methods. Numerical simulation of WSCC 9-bus shows that conservativeness of the PEBS method can be considerably reduced.
In order to improve calculational efficiency of the CAPP code in the analysis of the hexagonal reactor core, we have tried to implement a refined AFEN method with transverse gradient basis functions and interface flux moments in the hexagonal geometry. The numerical scheme for the refined AFEN method adopted here is the response matrix method that uses the interface partial currents as nodal unknowns instead of the interface fluxes used in the original AFEN method. Since the response matrix method is single-node based, it has good properties such as good calculational efficiency and parallel computing affinity. Because a refined AFEN method equivalent nonlinear FDM response matrix method tried first could not provide a numerically stable solution, a direct formulation of the refined AFEN response matrix were developed. To show the numerical performance of this response matrix method against the original AFEN method, the numerical error analyses were performed for several benchmark problems including the VVER-440 LWR benchmark problem and the MHTGR-350 HTGR benchmark problem. The results showed a more than three times speedup in computing time for the LWR and HTGR benchmark problems due to good convergence and excellent calculational efficiency of the refined AFEN response matrix method.
