  • P-type transparent conducting $CuGaO_2$ thin films have been prepared by DC/RF sputtering using Quartz(0001) and sapphire(0001) substrates. The target was fabricated by heating a stoichiometric mixture of CuO and $Ga_2O_3$ at 1373K for 12h under $N_2$ atmosphere. The film were deposited under mixture gas of Ar and $O_2(Ar:O_2=4:1)$ during 10~30min. and the as-deposited films were annealed at 1123K and $N_2$ atmosphere. Room temperature conductivity and the activation energy of the sintered body in the temperature range of 223K ~ 423K were 0 004S/cm, 1.9eV, respectively. XRD revealed that all of the as-deposited films were amorphous. Heating of the films deposited on Quartz substrates above 1123K resulted in crystallization with a second phase of $CuSiO_3$, which was assumed owing to reaction with Quartz substrate. The single phase of $CuGaO_2$ was obtained at the film deposited on the sapphire substrates. The transmittance after annealing of DC- and RF-sputtered films were 55~75% at 550nm. From the transmittance and reflectance measurement. the direct band gap of the DC/RF-sputtered films were 3.63eV and 3.57eV. and there was little difference between DC and RF sputtered films.

  • Contaminated liver fluke egg in the environment has led to the high prevalence of human opisthorchiasis associated with cholangiocarcinoma in Southeast Asia. To find the effective lessening methods of Opisthorchis viverrini eggs in the contaminated environment, we investigated the temperature conditions for killing of these trematode eggs in vitro. Numerous O. viverrini eggs were obtained in the proximal part of uteri of adult worms from experimental hamsters. Mature eggs with miracidium were allocated by experimental groups (2 control: positive and negative and 4 treatment: 50, 60, 70, and $80^{\circ}C$) with 0.85% saline, and treated by the experimental plan. Eggs in each experimental groups were observed under the confocal microscope after stain with Propidium Iodide (PI) to evaluate the effect of temperatures. Eggs in 70 and $80^{\circ}C$ groups were all killed after over 10 min heated. Majority of eggs in $60^{\circ}C$ (10, 15, and 30 min heated), 70 and $80^{\circ}C$ (5 min heated) groups were inactivated. However in $50^{\circ}C$ group, below half of eggs were to be killed in all time lapse (10, 15 and 30 min). In order to prevent O. viverrini infection and cholangiocarcinoma, direct treatment of sewage by heating at 70 or $80^{\circ}C$ at least 10 min is essential. Therefore, treatment of O. viverrini eggs at a high temperature is a potential method for controlling egg contamination in sewage.

  • Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are environmental carcinogenic compounds that arise by several means including food processing methods such as smoking and direct drying and cooking. This study examined the concentration of PAHs in sesame oils with various roasting temperatures (190, 220 and $250^{\circ}C$), methods (direct heating vs. indirect hot air heating), and times (5, 10, 15, 20 and 25 min). The PAHs in the sesame oils were analyzed using liquid-liquid extraction and solid-phase clean up (Florisil), followed by HPLC with fluorescence detection. According to the results, mean levels of total PAHs increased when the sesame oils were roasted at increasing temperatures and times. The sesame oil roasted at $250^{\circ}C$ for 25 min had the highest mean value of total PAHs (4.66 ${\mu}g$/kg). The results of this study suggest that the indirect hot air roasting method decreased PAH formation during sesame oil processing.

Also this study was attempeted to know the effects of calcium peroxide on germinationand early growth of rice under different soil conditions, seeding depth, application of organic matter, indirect sowing flooded paddy field.1. Rate of emergence was 73% in DSF, 70% in DSA, 62% in DSD, respectively, under the different cultivation method of rice in reclaimed paddy field.2. Degree of lodging in relation to cultivation was 5 at both DSF and DSA, 3 at DSD, 2 at both 8DS and 35DS respectively.3. Maximum tiller number was 568 per m2 at DSF and 527 at DSA. Heating was delayed for 4 days at DSF, 8 days at DSD and 2 days at 8DS as comparison with that at 35DS.4. Yield was higher 1% to 3% at DSF than that at DSA and DSD while decreased by 12% as compared with that of seedling planting.5. Total dry weight of seedling was decreased by 57% at 8DS, 60% at DSF 63% at DSD, respectively, under 0.3% of salinity. Ratio of decreasing in dry weight was higher with high salinity.6. The amount of O2 released was recorded highest to 2 to 3days after irrigatition, thereafter remaining constant to 10 days after irrigatition.7. The optimum coating amount of calcium peroxide for germination was a half of rice seed weight with 1 cm sowing depth and one-fold with 2-cm sowing depth when rice straw was not applied. With rice straw applied, on the other hand, the amount of peroxide was one-fold with 1-cm sowing depth. It was found that, under the condition of applied 600kg/10a, of 2-cm soil depth with rice straw calcium peroxide coating had no effect on emergence of rice seedling.8. In reclaimed paddy field, lodging degree was 7 with direct sowing by machine and 9 with direct sowing by hand.9. Yield was increased by 5% by applying rice straw with direct sowing by machine.

  • Biomass co-firing to existing thermal power plants is one of the most economical and efficient way to reduce $CO_2$ emission from the plant. There are several methods of co-firing and it can be categorized into (1) Parallel co-firing, (2) Indirect co-firing, and (3) Direct co-firing. Parallel co-firing is the most expensive way to high-ratio co-firing because it requires biomass dedicated boiler. Direct co-firing is widely used because it does not need high capital cost compared with the other two methods. Regarding the direct co-firing, it can be classified into three methods- Method 1 does not need retrofit of the facilities because it uses existing coal mills for pulverizing biomass fuels. In this case high-ratio co-firing cannot be achieved because of poor grindability of biomass fuels. Method 2 needs biomass-dedicated mills and revision of fuel streams for the combustion system, and Method 3 needs additional retrofit of the boiler as well as biomass mills. It can achieve highest share of the biomass co-firing compared with other two methods. In Korea, many coal power plants have been adopting Method 1 for coping with RPS(Renewable portfolio standards). Higher co-firing ratio (> 5% thermal share) has not been considered in Korean power plants due to policy of limitation in biomass co-firing for securing REC(Renewable Energy Certificate). On the other hand, higher-share co-firing of biomass is widely used in Europe and US using biomass dedicated mills, following their policy to enhance utilization of renewable energy in those countries. Technical problems which can be caused by increasing share of the biomass in coal power plants are summarized and discussed in this report. $CO_2$ abatement will become more and more critical issues for coal power plants since Paris agreement(2015) and demand of higher share of biomass in the coal power plants will be rapidly increased in Korea as well. Torrefaction of the biomass can be one of the best options because torrefied biomass has higher heating value and grindability than other biomass fuels. Perspective of the biomass torrefaction for co-firing is discussed, and economic feasibility of biomass torrefaction will be crucial for implementation of this technology.

  • Recent years in particular in Korea see intensive interests in a deep geothermal engineering and its application in different uses as far as from direct uses to power generation sectors, that are achieved by harnessing hot energy sources from the earth. For instance widespread interest has been generated because the geothermal energy is the source that one extracts it for more than 20 hours per day and for about 30 years of an operation of the plant, which enables to give base load as for heating as well as an electric generation. In retrospect, shallow geothermal energy using heat pumps is commonplace in Korea while the deep geothermal is in the early stage of the development. Geothermal energies in view of the way of extracting heat are mainly categorized into several types such as a single well system, a hydrothermal system, an enhanced geothermal system (EGS) etc. In this talk, this speaker focuses on the thermo-fluid engineering of the single well system by introducing the modeling in order to harness hot fluid that is thermally balanced with the fluid of an injection well, which provides a challenge to assess the life time of the well. To avoid the loss of the temperature in producing the hot fluid, a specialized pipe or a borehole heat exchanger has been designed, and its concept is introduced. On the other hand, a binary system or an organic Rankine cycle, which provides the methodology to convert the heat into an electricity, is briefly introduced. Some experimental results of the binary system which has been constructed in our lab will be presented. Lastly as for the future direction, some comments for the industrialization of the deep geothermal energy in this country will be discussed.

  • This paper provides a case study of landfill gas (LFG) utilization fer direct use as process fuel, and for electrical power generation at restored landfills in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of China (HKSAR). The paper specifically covers the LFG utilization schemes, which are required under landfill restoration contracts at the Shuen Wan and Urban Landfills. These contracts provide for the restoration and aftercare of six landfills, and are administered by the Environmental Protection Department (EPD) of the Hong Kong Government. The LFG utilization scheme at the Shuen Wan Landfill incorporates the direct use of LFG by compressing and dehumidifying the LFG prior to conveyance through a 1.6-kilometer (1-mile) pipeline. The pipeline provides an alternate fuel source to naphtha during process heating for gas production at the Tai Po Gas Production Plant of the Hong Kong and China Gas Limited (HKCC). The LFG utilization scheme at the Jordan Valley Landfill (one of the Urban Landfills) beneficially uses the LFG as fuel for electrical power generation with reciprocating internal combustion engines. The LFG is compressed, cooled, and filtered prior to delivery to two engine/generator sets. This system provides power to operate the leachate pre-treatment plant, which processes leachate from all of the Urban Landfill sites. The case study will examine the technical and non-technical considerations, including harriers, for developing, designing and implementing the LFG utilization projects in Hong Kong. Specific regulatory considerations and external governmental agency approvals are discussed, including the requirement to register as a gas-producing utility. While the paper focuses on LFG utilization applications in Hong Kong, many of the considerations discussed are also applicable to development of LFG utilization in other regions of Asia.

  • A series of aromatic poly(hydroxyamide)s (PHAs) containing varying oligo(oxyethylene) substituents and 1,3-phenylene imide ring unit in the main chain were synthesized by the direct polycondensation reaction. The inherent viscosities of the PHAs exhibited in the range of 0.89~1.12 dL/g in DMAc or DMAc/LiCl solution. The PH-2~5 copolymers were easily soluble in strong aprotic solvents: DMAc, NMP, DMSO etc. and the PH-5 copolymer was soluble in less polar solvents such as m-creasol and pyridine with LiCl salt on heating. However, all PBOs were quite insoluble in other solvents, but only partially soluble in sulfuric acid. All copolymers (PH-2~5) could afford the flexible and tough films by solution casting. We identified that the PHAs were converted to the PBOs by the thermal cyclization reaction in the range of $200{\sim}380^{\circ}C$. The 10% weight loss temperatures and char yields of the PBOs were recorded in the range of $382{\sim}647^{\circ}C$ and 38.7~73.1% values at $900^{\circ}C$. The tensile strength and initial modulus of the PH-5 in the copolmers showed the highest values of 2.46 GPa and 49.55 MPa, respectively. The LOI values of the PHAs were in the range 26.6~29.0%, and increased with increasing 1,3-phenylene imide ring unit.

  • The experiment was designed to study the char oxidation kinetics of pulverized coals commonly utilized in Korean power plants. The kinetics has been estimated using the Semenov's thermal spontaneous ignition theory adapted to coal char particle ignition temperature. The ignition temperature of coal char particle is obtained by a direct measurement of the particle temperature with photo detector as well as by means of a solid thermocouple which is used as both a heating and a measuring element. The ignition temperatures for subbituminous coal, Wira, and bituminous coal, Yakutugol, have been measured for 4 sizes in the range of 0.52-1.09 mm. The ignition temperature of the particle increases with the increasing diameter. The results were used to calculate the activation energy and the pre-exponential factor. As a result, the kinetic parameters are in an agreement with ones reported from other investigations.

  • This paper presents analytic results of energy sequestered for the forcing cultural Cu- cumber and the others production system with the input-output tables method in the suthern parts of Korea. In this study an attempt is made to evaluate input of direct and indirect energy, output of yield energy and net energy in order to achieve increased energy productivity under P E greenhouse. Cultural practices were grouped soil and soilless with perlite for vegetable production. The results from this study are summarized as follows : 1. Total energy inputs in cucumber production were calculated to be 510 GJ/l0a(di- rect energy : 480 GJ/lOa, indirect energy : 30 GJ/lOa) from soil culture and 440 GJ/ 10a(direct energy : 420 GJ/lOa, indirect energy : 20 GJ/lOa) from soilless culture in perlite hydroponics. 2. Energy outputs from cucumber and biomass were 7 GJ/lOa and 120 GJ/lOa at a uniform rate respectively. 3. Heating fuel as diesel is a major energy inputs approaching 90% of the total energy requirements for cucumber production. 4. Net energy in cucumber production was calculated to be 503 GJ/lOa from soil cul- ture and 431 GJ/lOa from soilless culture. Net energy productivity was maintained costantly as 0.98. 5. Energy productivity in cucumber was calculated to be 0.029 kg/MJ from soil culture and 0.043kg/MJ from soilless culture, while energy efficiency was 0.012 and 0.015 respectively. It is expected that a soilless cultural production system seems to be reduc- tive in seguestered energy input by 13%.
