  • The self-noise from blade cascade at off-design points mainly comes from separated boundary layer and vortex sheddings, and is also dependent on blade shape. If the incidence angle to the cascade increases, the stalling in blades may occur and the noise level increases significantly. The hybrid method using acoustic analogy was employed to compute the far-field noise spectra and directivity patterns from the separated vortex shedding at off-design points of the cascade of impeller. This paper is compared with the experimental data of a stationary cascade in the same conditions. The simulated result is in excellent .agreement with the measured data except th slight under-prediction near the maximum radiation angle for a dipole sound.

  • A BEM is highly efficient method in the sense of economic computation. However, boundary integration is not easy for the complex and moving surface e.g. in a rotating blade. Thus, Kirchhoff surface is designed in an effort to overcome the difficulty resulting from complex boundary conditions. A Kirchhoff surface is a fictitious surface which envelopes acoustic sources of main concern. Acoustic sources may be distributed on each Kirchhoff surface element depending on its acoustic characteristics. In this study, an axial fan is assumed to have loading noise as a dominant source. Dipole sources can be computed based on the FW-H equation. Acoustic field is then computed by changing Kirchhoff surfaces on which near-field is implemented, to analyze the effect of Kirchhoff surface on it.

  • Sound intensity distributions and energy flow in the near field of dipole source system and flat plate were investigated. First, the effectiveness of complex acoustic intensity was proved by using mathmatical and experimental methods in order to indentify noise sources and transmission paths of dipole field which is effected by the presence of neighbouring coherent sources. Next, analytical complex acoustic intensity method was discussed and the characteristics and energy flow of sound induced from the plate are clarified. The velocity of plate obtained from Finite Element Method was used for calculation of complex acoustic intensity in the near field. Finally experimental complex acoustic intensity method was applied to a passenger car. It can be seen that complex acoustic intensity method using both of active and reactive intensity is vital in devising a strategy for the identification and the reduction of vibration and noise.

  • Proposed is an aero-acoustic performance prediction method of axial fan. The fan aerodynamic performance is predicted by combining pitch-averaged quasi 3-D flow analysis with pressure loss models for blade boundary layer and wake, secondary flow, endwall boundary layer and tip leakage flows. Fan noise is assumed to be radiated as dipole distribution type, and its generation is assumed to be mainly due to the vortex street shed from blade trailing edge. The fluctuating pressure and lift on the blade surface are analyzed by incorporating the wake vortex stree shed from blade trailing edge. The fluctuating pressure and lift on the blade surface are analyzed by incorporating the wake vortex street model with thin airfoil theory. The aero-acoustic performance prediction results by the present method are in good agreement with the measured results of several axial fans. With the present prediction method, parametric studies are carried out to investigate the effects of blade chord length and spacing on the efficiency and the noise level of fan. In the case of lightly loaded fan, both efficiency improvement and noise reduction can be achieved by decreasing chord length or by increasing blade specing. However, when fan is designed at highly loaded condition, the noise reduction by increasing blade spacing penalizes the attaninable efficiency of fan.

  • A computer program is developed for the prediction of the aerodynamic performance and the noise characteristics in the basic design step of axial flow fan. The flow field and the performance of fan are analyzed by using the streamline curvature computing scheme with total pressure loss and flow deviation models. Fan noise is assumed to be generated due to the pressure fluctuations induced by wake vortices of fan blades and to radiate via dipole distribution. The vortex-induced fluctuating pressure on blade surface is calculated by combining thin airfoil theory and the predicted flow field data. The predicted performances, sound pressure level and noise directivity patterns of fan by the present method are favorably compared with the test data of actual fan. Furthermore, the present method is shown to be very useful in optimizing design variables of fan with high efficiency and low noise level.

  • The accurate localization of electrical sources in the brain is one of the most important questions in EEG, especially in the analysis of evoked responses and of epileptiform spike activity. A detailed simulation study of single dipole source estimation based on EEG is given in this paper. The effects of dipole model parameters on single dipole source tracing in EEG are examined in some detail using the Monte Carlo simulation. The error of source localization is found to be greatly influenced by how the electrodes are distributed over the head and the number of them.

  • Resistivity data should be edited before the inversion because resistivity data are contaminated by a lot of noise. Generally, outlier or data violating pants-leg effect in dipole-dipole array were used to be rejected in the apparent resistivity pseudo-section. For more precise data editing, normalized voltage curves are used. In this study, we analyzed the behavior of normalized voltage curves for pole-pole, pole-dipole and dipole-dipole arrays in the presence of threedimensional inhomogeneities, and finally re-examined the validity of normalized voltage curves in the editing process of resistivity data.

  • The dipole method is now popular means for S-wave logging. Essential features of this method are explained, emphasizing basic concept based on approximation of the long-wavelength and the far-field. History of my researches concerned is shortly reviewed as background to reach the idea of this method. Short wavelength behavior of the dipole method is simply reviewed. Methods to reject tube wave noise are commented.
