Development of Productivity-based Estimating Tool for Fuel Use and Emissions from Earthwork Construction Activities

  • Earthwork activities are typically performed by heavy duty diesel (HDD) construction equipment that consumes large quantities of diesel fuel use and emits large quantities of pollutants, including nitrogen oxides (NOx), particulate matters (PM), hydrocarbon (HC), carbon monoxide (CO), and carbon dioxide ($CO_2$). This paper presents the framework for a model that can be used to estimate the production rate, activity duration, total fuel use, and total pollutants emissions for earthwork activities. A case study and sensitivity analysis for an excavator performing excavations are presented. The tool is developed by combining the multiple linear regressions (MLR) approach for modeling the productivity with the EPA's NONROAD model. The excavator data from RSMeans Heavy Construction Data were selected to build the productivity model, and emission factors of all type of pollutants from NONROAD model were used to estimate the total fuel use and emissions. The MLR model for the productivity rate can explain 92% of the variability in the data. Based on the model, the fuel use and emissions of excavator increase as the trench depth increase, but as the bucket size increase, the fuel use and emissions decrease.

  • A technique to measure the adsorption characteristic of surface area and pore size distribution is proposed and its performance is examined. While the existing equipment utilizes liquid nitrogen, the proposed uses carbon dioxide at the room temperature leading to the small measuring device with easy operation and short measurement time. The performance of the device has been examined with micro-particle carbon cryogel and bamboo activated carbon. The results from the proposed device compared with those of the adsorption apparatus indicate that the measurement of meso-porous material is comparable but micro-porous material gives some error.

Synthesis and Antimicrobial Properties of Surfactants Contaning Phenazine Ring (Ⅱ) (Phenazine Ring을 가진 界面活性劑의 合成과 그 抗菌性 (제2보))

  • -Alkyl-2-hydroxyphenazine-5,10-dioxides were synthesized from hydroquinone, and alkyl benzofuroxanes which were previously obtained through five reaction steps starting from aniline. Infrared, nuclear mangnetic resonance spectrometry and elemental analysis were employed to identify the products concerned in the synthetic processes. It was observed that these alkylated phenazine oxides lowered the surface tension of water substantially. These derivatives showed stronger antimicrobial activity against both gram positive and negative microbes than 1-carboxyphenazine which had no alkyl side chain. It was also found that the antimicrobial activity of the phenazine compound increased when the nitrogen of the ring was bound to the oxygen atom.

  • Power generation systems based on the oxy-coal combustion with carbon dioxide capture and storage (CCS) capability are being proposed and discussed lately. Although a large number of lab scale studies for oxy-coal power plant have been made, studies of pilot scale or commercial scale power plant are not enough. Only a few demonstration projects for oxy-coal power plant are publicized recently. The proposed systems are evolving and various alternatives are to be comparatively evaluated. This paper presents a proposed approach for performance evaluation of a commercial 100 MWe class power plant, which is currently being considered for 'retrofitting' for the demonstration of the concept. The system is configurated based on design and operating conditions with proper assumptions. System components to be included in the discussion are listed. Evaluation criteria in terms of performance are summarized based on the system heat and mass balance and simple performance parameters, such as the fuel to power efficiency and brief introduction of the second law analysis. Also, gas composition is identified for additional analysis to impurities in the system including the purity of oxygen and unwanted gaseous components of nitrogen, argon and oxygen in air separation unit and $CO_2$ processing unit.

Comparative Study on Nitrogen Dioxide Exposure of Female Teachers from Kindergarten and House Wives (유치원 여교사(女敎師)와 전업주부(主婦)의 이산화질소 노출비교 및 평가)

  • Since most people spend over 80% of their time indoor, indoor air quality tends to be the dominant contributor to personal exposure. In this study, indoor and outdoor $NO_2$concentrations were measured and compared with simultaneously personal exposures of 27 house-wives and female workers of kindergarten. Time activity pattern and house characteristics were used to determine the effects of these factors on personal exposure. Since house-wives student spent most their times in indoor with mean of 89.8%, their $NO_2$ exposure was associated with indoor $NO_2$ level(r= 0.92) rather than outdoor $NO_2$ level(r= 0.87). female workers were also associated with indoor $NO_2$ level(r= 0.70) though sample number were small. Using time-weighted average model, $NO_2$ exposures of house-wives were estimated by $NO_2$ measurements in indoor home and outdoor home levels. Estimated $NO_2$ personal exposures were significantly correlated with measured $NO_2$ personal exposures (r= 0.90). These results might mean that air pollutants exposure of old and feeble persons, and infants could be estimated by measuring concentrations of indoor home.

Effects of Human Activity Patterns on Personal Exposure Levels of Nitrogen Dioxide in A-San Area (아산지역에 있어서의 $NO_{2}$ 개인 피폭량에 미치는 각종 생활행동 패턴의 영향)

  • Personal exposure levels of $NO_{2}$ for office workers and housewives Living in A-San and neighboring prefectures were measured in two seasons with $NO_{2}$ filter badge. $NO_{2}$ concentrations in indoor and outdoor air in their offices and houses were also measured in the same periods. Personal exposure levels in winter ranged from 13 to 132 ppb and its distribution pattern was remarkably different from the other seasons (15.2-17.9 ppb). This fact suggests that use of heating apparatus affects largely $NO_{2}$ indoor air pollution in winter seasons. Actually, $NO_{2}$ exposure levels of subjects used Kerosene heater (43.6ppb) and gas heater (33.4ppb) were higher than those of subjects unused heating apparatus (18.0ppb). Personal exposure levels of $NO_{2}$ for man and woman Living in the same houses were correlated well each other. The time spent indoors for office workers and housewives were both longer than 22 hour a day. Home staying time was about 60% of total indoor staying time for office workers and 90% or more for housewives. Personal exposure levels were significantly related to indoor exposure levels at home all seasons. Furthermore, personal exposure levels could be estimated from $NO_{2}$ concentrations and staying times in various Living environment.

  • The sensor consists of a heater, an insulating layer, a pair of contact electrodes, and CNT-sensing film on a micromachined diaphragm. The heater plays a role in the temperature change to modify sensor operation. Gas sensor responses of CNT-film to $NO_2$ at room temperature are reported. The sensor exhibits a reversible response with a time constant of a few minutes at thermal treatment temperature of $130^{\circ}C$.

  • A CRDI diesel engine used to commercial vehicle was fueled with 20% biodiesel fuel(BDF 20) in excess of 150 hours. Engine dynamometer testing was completed at regularly scheduled intervals to monitor the engine performance and exhaust emissions. The engine performance and exhaust emissions were sampled at 1 hour interval for analysis, Also, BSEC with BDF 20 resulted in lower than with diesel fuel. Since the biodiesel fuel used in this study includes oxygen of about 11%, it could influence the combustion process strongly. So, BDF 20 resulted in lower emissions of carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, and smoke emissions without special increase of oxides of nitrogen than diesel fuel. It was concluded that there was no unusual deterioration of the engine, or any unusual change in exhaust emissions from using the BDF 20.

  • Ozone, sulfur dioxide, and nitrogen oxides were measured at Kosan, Cheju Island, Korea during the period of March 11 .sim. April 19, 1994. During the measurement period, the average SO$_{2}$ and NOx concentrations were about 0.97 ppb and 3.5 ppb, respectively. Average NO concentration was below the detection limit and thus the effect of NO during the period was negligible. The concentrations of SO$_{2}$ and Nox were lower than those at other urban area in Korea but higher than other remote areas in the world. Average $O_{3}$ concentration for the period was about 55 ppb, slightly higher than or comparable to those at remote marine areas in the world. Detailed analyses of trend of gaseous species concentrations show that the effects of local NO emission sources for NOx concentration were significant during the period, while those of local SO$_{2}$ emission sources were not high. Backward trajectory analysis results show that when SO$_{2}$ or $O_{3}$ concentration was higher than the average concentrations, the air parcels were transported from China.

The Change of $NO_{2}$ Sensing Characteristics for Carbon Nanotubes with Growth and Post Treatment Conditions (탄소 나노튜브의 성장 및 후처리 조건에 따른 이산화질소 감지특성의 변화)

  • Carbon nanotubes (CNT) grown by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) and plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD), and followed by annealing at $400{\sim}500^{\circ}C$ were investigated for gas sensing under 1.5ppm $NO_{2}$ concentration at an operating temperature of $200^{\circ}C$. The electrical resistance of CNT sensor decreased with temperature, indicating a semiconductor type. The resistance of CNT sensor decreased with $NO_{2}$ adsorption. It was found that the sensitivity of sensor was affected by humidity and decreased under microwave irradiation for 3 minutes. The CNT sensor grown by PECVD had a higher sensitivity than that of CVD.
