In this paper, we propose the use of stochastic finite element method, that is popularly employed in mechanical structure analysis, for more practical designing purpose of RF device. The proposed method is formulated based on the vector finite element method cooperated by pertubation analysis. The method utilizes sensitivity analysis algorithm with covariance matrix of the random variables that represent for uncertain physical quantities such as length or various electrical constants to compute the probabilities of the measure of performance of the structure. For this computation one need to know the variance and covariance of the random variables that might be determined by practical experiences. The presenting algorithm has been verified by analyzing several device with different be determined by practical experiences. The presenting algorithm has been verified by analysis several device with different measure of performanes. For the convenience of formulation, two dimensional analysis has been performed to apply it into waveguide with dielectric slab. In the problem the dielectric constant of the dielectric slab is considered as random variable. Another example is matched waveguide and cavity problem. In the problem, the dimension of them are assumed to be as random variables and the expectations and variances of quality factor have been computed.

Springs are widely utilized in machine element. To find out stiffness of coil spring, the space beam theory using the finite element method is adopted in this paper. In three dimensional space, a space frame element is a straight bar of uniform cross section which is capable of resisting axial forces, bending moments about two principal axes in the plane of its cross section and twisting moment about its centroidal axis. The corresponding displacement degrees of freedom are twelve. The displacements of nodal points due to small increment of force are calculated by the finite element method and the calculated nodal displacements are added to coordinates of nodal points. The new stiffness matrix of the system using the new coordinates of nodal points is adopted to calculated the another increments of nodal displacements, that is, the step by step method is used in this paper. The results of the finite element method are fairly well agreed with those of various experiments. Using MATLAB program developed in this paper, spring constants can be predicted by input of few factors.
The analysis of laterally loaded piles is generally carried out by idealizing the soil mass as Winkler springs, which is a crude approximation; however this approach gives reasonable results for many practical applications. For more precise analysis, the three- dimensional finite element analysis (FEA) is one of the best alternatives. The FEA uses the modulus of elasticity $E_s$ of soil, which can be determined in the laboratory by conducting suitable laboratory tests on undisturbed soil samples. Because of the different concepts and idealizations in these two approaches, the results are expected to vary significantly. In order to investigate this fact in detail, three-dimensional finite element analyses were carried out using different combinations of soil and pile characteristics. The FE results related to the pile deflections are compared with the closed-form solutions in which the modulus of subgrade reaction $k_s$ is evaluated using the well-known $k_s-E_s$ relationship. In view of the observed discrepancy between the FE results and the closed-form solutions, an improved relationship between the modulus of subgrade reaction and the elastic constants is proposed, so that the solutions from the closed-form equations and the FEA can be closer to each other.
B$\Phi$rrensen proposed a coarse mesh, three-dimensional one-and-half group diffusion scheme for computing the gross power distribution in light water reactors as an alternative to the conventional fine mesh finite difference approach in dealing with three dimensional problems, which require a prohibitively long computing time. The method reported takes extremely small execution time. However, its computational accuracy has not been investigated yet. The B$\Phi$rrensen method is revised in this work and both efficiency and accuracy are examined by applying it to IAEA benchmark problem and RIS$\Phi$ benchmark problem. It is found that two modifications on core-reflector boundary conditions and B$\Phi$rrensen's model constants may improve computational accuracy of power distribution calculation.

Longshore currents driven by monochromatic waves have been described using 2-equation $textsc{k}$-ι turbulence transport model. When using $textsc{k}$-ι closure both profiles of eddy viscosity and current velocity are found to be satisfactory. Several terms of ι equation are related to various variables concerned with turbulence mechanism. New form of turbulence frequency used in ι equation is suggested in the present approach, and non-dimensional parameters are evaluated by comparing the computational results with the laboratory measurements. Various values of a large range are applied to the non-dimensional parameters for the sensitivity test and in order to improve the predictability common values of constants are deduced, which produce similarly good computational results for the well-controlled laboratory measurements.
'Kite' is a newly developed single-channel seismic imaging system capable of producing high resolution three dimensional images of subbottom geology in one traverse of a survey region. The system consists of a horizontally towed hydrophone array and active source. The hydrophone array is towed axis perpendicular to ship direction and the airgun source at the end of the hydrophone array is excited at timed intervals during the progression. The construction of the three dimensional subbottom image was made simply by using conventional multichannel seismic reflection data processing techniques. Common source shot (CSS) gathers of the hydrophone traces are evaluated using Dix's equation for average interval velocity of each subbottom layer. From the interval velocity profile and the normal consolidation stress condition, values of shear modulus, porosity, and shear velocity are deduced from the chosen values of physical constants. The system has been successfully tested at several locations on the North Atlantic continental shelf.

We have synthesized a 17-residue peptide with the amino acid sequence RQMKEDAKGKSEEELAD corresponding to residues 84-100 of chicken skeletal troponin C. This stretch of the protein sequence is in the middle one-third of the 32-residue 9-turn α-helix that connects the two globular domains of the dumbell-shaped molecule and includes the D/E linker helix. We describe here the solution conformation of the helix linker as studied by circular dichroism (CD) and two-dimensional nuclear magnetic resonance (2-D NMR) spectroscopy. The NOE connectivities together with the vicinal $^3J_{N{\alpha}}$ coupling constants suggest that the peptide exists in a fast conformational equilibrium among several secondary structure: a nascent helix near the N-terminus, a helix, and a substational population of extended and random coil forms. In addition, two interresidue α-α NOEs are observed suggesting a bent structure with a bend that includes the single glycine in position 92. These results are consistent with the ideas that in neutral solution the D/E linker region of the central helix in troponin C can adopt a helical conformation and the central helix may have a segmental flexibility around Gly 92.
By combining the multi-faceted environmental responsiveness of polymer hydrogels with photonically active structures, there has been a significant effort to create color-tunable photonic crystal sensors by changing either the periodic spacing of the structure or the dielectric constants of the materials. Here, we show that reversible spiral and helical opal switches with both dimensional and optical functionalities that respond to environmental chemistry can be constructed. When the transparent opal switch is swollen in hydrophilic acetic acid, right-handed spirals and helices that exhibit angularly dependent colors from Bragg diffraction are formed. When the transparent opal switch is swollen in hydrophobic hexane, left-handed spirals which exhibit angularly dependent colors from Bragg diffraction are formed. When the transparent opal switch is swollen in hydrophobic hexane solvent, a left-handed spiral and helix with an angularly independent bluish color is formed. After deswelling, all switches returned back to the transparent planar state. These color-tunable, reversible spiral and helical opal switches can be useful as mechanical actuators, and electrical devices as well as optical components.

Using FLAC, which is an explicit finite difference code written for analysis of problems in geotechnical engineering, a particular example 2 in the Korean Geothechnical Society News has been analysed. The elastoplasticity formulation in FLAC assumes an elastic, perfectly plastic solid in plane strain which conforms to a Mohr-Coulomb yield condition. During tunnel excavations by stages, stresses and diaplacements in region around the tunnel varies according to distance from the face of tunnel and installation of tunnel supports, and soon. In this analysis, the three dimensional support effect of the rock mass during the process of excavation is simulated by using the stress distribution method, and varying the material constants of shotcrete in each stage also considered. The maximum convergency is occured at the crown of the tunnel and estimated to be about 12mm.

This paper proposes a simple but effective design method of PID control using a numerical optimization method. In order to achieve both stability and performance, gain and phase margins and performance indices of step response directly compose of the cost function. Hence, the proposed approach is a multiobjective optimization problem. The main effectiveness of this approach results from the strong capability of the used optimization method. A one-dimensional example concerning gain margin illustrates the practical applicability of the optimization method. The present approach has many degrees of freedom in controller design by only adjusting related weight constants. The attained PID controller is compared with Wang#s and Ho#s methods, IAE, and ISE for a high-order process, and the simulation result for various design targets shows that the proposed approach achieves desired time-domain performance with a guarantee of frequency-domain stability.
