  • This paper describes an automatic design system for the parts that compose the power transmission. Power transmission is composed of shaft, gear, clutch, brake and housing. To design power transmission, there are many recurrent calculations and drawings needed with conventional design process. In this paper, we propose three dimensional automatic design system that reduce recurrent calculations and drawings. Developed system consists of two modules; 1) Design expert system module to assist determining design parameters of clutch, brake and gear. 2) Parametric modeling module to make three dimensional solid model automatically. The proposed system has been tested in the fields and found to be a useful system.

  • An aerodynamic optimization design process of multistage axial turbine is presented in this article: first, applying quasi-three dimensional(Q3D) design methods to conduct preliminary design and then adopting modern optimization design methods to implement multistage local optimization. Quasi-three dimensional(Q3D) design methods, which mainly refer to S2 flow surface direct problem calculation, adopt the S2 flow surface direct problem calculation program of Harbin Institute of Technology. Multistage local optimization adopts the software of Numeca/Design3D, which jointly adopts genetic algorithm and artificial neural network. The major principle of the methodology is that the successive design evaluation is performed by using an artificial neural network instead of a flow solver and the genetic algorithms may be used in an efficient way. Flow computation applies three-dimensional viscosity Navier Stokes(N-S) equation solver. Such optimization process has three features: (i) local optimization based on aerodynamic performance of every cascade; (ii) several times of optimizations being performed to every cascade; and (iii) alternate use of coarse grid and fine grid. Such process was applied to optimize a three-stage axial turbine. During the optimization, blade shape and meridional channel were respectively optimized. Through optimization, the total efficiency increased 1.3% and total power increased 2.4% while total flow rate only slightly changed. Therefore, the total performance was improved and the design objective was achieved. The preliminary design makes use of quasi-three dimensional(Q3D) design methods to achieve most reasonable parameter distribution so as to preliminarily enhance total performance. Then total performance will be further improved by adopting multistage local optimization design. Thus the design objective will be successfully achieved without huge expenditure of manpower and calculation time. Therefore, such optimization design process may be efficiently applied to the aerodynamic design optimization of multistage axial turbine.

  • A review on the design analysis of an axial-flow turbine is presented. Followed by a brief introduction to the fundamentals on an axial-flow turbine, a design procedure is described with a sample design of one for a small turbo-jet engine. Design procedure is composed of two parts: one-dimensional analysis of three-dimensional effects based on radial equilibrium theory. The method described herein is so simple and rapid that it can be applied to the preliminary design analysis of turbo-machinery equipped with axial-flow turbines.

  • Described in this paper is the result of a study on collision analysis of TGV-K using 1-dimensional model for crashworthy design. Crashworthy design of the front end is very important because majority of the impact energy (more than 70%) is absorbed by the crush of the front end when the train is collided with an obstacle like a tank lorry. Guideline for the crashworthy design can be described from the collision analysis of the whole train using a 1-dimensional model. Since the headstock of TGV-K is not designed in a crashworthy point of view, a conceptual design of the headstock to improve crashworthiness is suggested and evaluated using 1-dimensional collision analysis. The suggested design, which adopts an energy absorber and a crashworthy headstock, shows a good behaviour on the accident scenario of SNCF (collision at 110 km/h against a movable rigid mass of 15 ton).

  • When designing a gerotor, designers determine basic dimensions of a gerotor with transmitted power considering strength, interference and so on. But, designers can not easily obtain the tooth profile generated by dimensions as well as the geometry of generating hob for cutting the tooth profile. In order to resolve these problems, an automatic design system creating not only the solid model of a gerotor but also that of the generating hob using the design parameters of dimensions is developed. Through the developed system, designers can improve the efficiency of design and satisfy the variable requirements of design as well. In this research, the three-dimensional solid model of gerotor is generated considering the design parameters. Besides, that of generating hob with respect to the design parameters of hob is created automatically. The system is developed using Visual Basic and its three-dimensional geometric modeling module is constructed using SolidWorks.

  • This study is carried out to introduce the concept of Kagome structure as the new trial for the furniture design and the feasibility of its utilization in furniture industry. Kagome means originally the two dimensional bamboo-basket woven pattern that is composed of interlaced triangles whose lattice points each have four neighboring points, which was used in traditional bamboo craft design like 'Jukbuin(bamboo-wife)'. Its unique truss structure has been widely used by many kinds of the domain of science and engineering in mechanical and architectural industry with some merits, i,e, material utilization efficiency and robust strength. Here we tried to introduce two dimensional and three dimensional form of Kagome which are supposed to be a furniture design elements. Authors think these Kagome design could be realized with domestic lumber of inferior properties. Both of them would be used as a decorative element or mechanical supporter in furniture design.

  • The layout design of component plays an important role in the design and usability of many engineering products. The Engineering artifacts of today are becoming increasingly complicated. The simulated annealing method has been applied effectively to the layout and packing problems of wafer. The main characteristics of simulated annealing method is that an optimum can be obtained from the many local optimums by controlling the temperature and introducing the statistic flickering. The objective of this study is to suggest a method to apply the simulated annealing method to the three dimensional layout design of submergible boat which has multiple constraint conditions and evaluation criteria. We describe an approach to define cost function, constraints and generate layouts using a computer. In this research three dimensional LAYout Design Optimization Program(LAYDOP ver.2) has been developed. The layout result(the total value of evaluation criteria) designed by a human layout expert has been improved by 31.0% using this program.

  • Topology optimization has been widely used for the optimal structure design for weight reduction and high performance. Since the result of three-dimensional topology optimization is represented by the discrete material distribution in finite elements, it is hard to interpret from a design point of view. In this paper, the method for interpreting three-dimensional topology optimization resuIt into a series of cross-sectional curve representation is proposed and interfaced with the existing CAD system for the practical use. The concept of node density and virtual grid is introduced to transform element density values into grid density and material boundaries in each cross section are identified based on the element volume rate to satisfy the amount of material specified in the original design intent. Design exampIes show that three-dimensional topology result can be converted into a form of curve CAD model and the seamless interface with CAD software can be achieved.

  • This study was intended to develop the design program of the working surface of moldboard-plow by use of the computer-aided design. The mathematical model of the working surfaces of moldboard-plows by use of computer graphics was developed and plotted in two dimension on three major planes. The surfaces of moldboard-plows were represented with "B-spline surface fitting" by selecting the twenty-five three-dimensional data that could well describe the working surface of moldboard-plow. The shape of moldboard-plow on three major planes was drawn for varied design parameters. The representation of the mathematical model for the working surfaces of various types of moldboard-plows was manipulated by translation, rotation and scaling about arbitrary axes in space. By using three-dimensional graphics techique to describe moldboard-plows, it was capable of plotting the three-dimensional shape of moldboard-plow easily and quickly in comparison with the existing design methods that were difficult to grasp the shape of moldboard-plow as a whole. The design theories of moldboard plow and three-dimensional computer graphic technique were applied to find out the improved reversible Jaenggi bottom. It was resulted in the newly developed shape of Jaenggi which may be used for improving the performance compared to existing ones.
