  • Polychaete community structure and its spatial distribution was investigated in 2008 from inshore and offshore of Lake Shihwa, Korea, in order to evaluate status of the benthic environment according to construction of the dike and the water gate. In the present study, the number of species, density, and diversity of polychaete community in inshore was significantly different from those in offshore. The density of polychaete community in offshore increased with the number of species whereas the diversity in inshore increased with the number of species. Dominant species in offshore were 13 species, higher than 1% of the total polychaete individuals. Heteromastus filiformis, known as the most dominant species before the construction of the dike, was the most dominant species in offshore, which collectively account for 54% of the total polychaete individuals. In inshore, the seven species were dominant, higher than 1% of the total individuals. Lumbrineris longifolia, Polydora sp., Capitella capitata, Pseudopolydora paucibranchiata, known as pollution tolerant species, contributed to higher than 75% of the total individuals in inshore. Multivariate statistical analyses, non-metric multidimensional scaling, showed apparent difference in polychaete community structure between inshore and offshore, and also difference between inner sites and outer sites of inshore around the water gate. Sediment characteristics (total organic carbon and nitrogen, ignition loss, and acid volatile sulfide) measured in this study also supported to this result. Therefore, this indicates that the offshore provides better benthic environments for polychaete habitation than the inshore, and the inshore around the water gate shows improving benthic environment, compared to the inner inshore.

  • Resistivity inversion result may be distorted if the seepage line fluctuation within central core with the change of reservoir water level as well as the conductivity of the reservoir water is not taken into consideration because the reservoir dike is composed of three-dimensional (3D) resistivity structure. Consequently, to accurately analyze the resistivity changes inside the reservoir dike according to the change of reservoir water level, 3D electrical resistivity modeling for the 2D survey line considering topography and physical properties of dam components was carried out. In addition, 2D inversion was performed with the simulated 2D resistivity data for a given 3D model in order to compare it with the inversion result of real field data. For 283 reservoirs in Korea, 2D inversion results for the simulated 2D data and field 2D resistivity data were compared. Finally, the reservoirs with an inversion ratio of 50% or less were selected as reservoirs that require further precise investigation.

  • Samples were collected to investigate the effect of salinity change on biological interaction between primary producers and herbivores in water column of the Youngsan estuary (Mokpo Harbor) at 8 stations from October 2003 to September 2004. The highest river freshwater inputs were introduced into the estuary from the Youngsan dike during summer (June and July 2004). Ranges of salinity were between 6 and 28.9 psu when the gates of dike were open whereas the ranges were between 24.4 and 30.3 psu when the gates were closed. Algal bloom occurred in February and July when the gates were not open at the upper region of the Youngsan estuary and the bloom was dominated $(70\%)$ by large cells of phytoplankton $(micro-sized;>20{\mu}m).\;Nano-sized (2-20{\mu}m)$ and pico-sized phytoplankton $(<2{\mu}m)$ were dominant in October, November 2003, June, August and September 2004 when the gates were open suggesting that size structure was affected by river discharge from the dike. Micro-and meso-zooplankton (herbivores) displayed the similar pattern to that of phytoplankton. The biomass of zooplankton was higher when the gates were closed than when the gates open and also the biomass was higher at the upper region of the harbor system. This results suggest that freshwater inputs affect size structure and biomass of phytoplankton by changing salinity, nutrient inputs, turbidity or light level In water column resulting in the change of the interaction between primary producters and herbivores in the Youngsan estuary.

  • Deterioration due to de-icer salt occurs in practice in concrete pavement, dike, barrier and similar structure. This paper reports the results of effect of de-icer salt on. durability of concrete structure in winter. To protect concrete structure from damage by de-icer salt in winter, the exposure test was performed using three countermeasures such as increase in design strength upto $350kg/cm^2$, application of ggbf slag powder, and concrete sealer. Of these, the method of increase in design strength upto $350kg/cm^2$ showed better durability for deterioration by de-icer salt.

  • The gate expansion was planed to increase discharge capacity of gate structure at sea dike in Asan Bay. So it was estimated for changing of hydraulic states in Pyeongteak Harbor Zone caused by gate expansion, by 2D and 3D CFD Module. In result, influence of gate expansion was less than tidal current and discharge ratio between old gate and new gate was 4:6.

  • We have carried out integrated research including field survey and numerical modeling to appraise the applicability of SP method to the leakage problems of irrigation facilities. The leakage pattern of the dike studied here can be classified into the three categories: leakage through the abutment, leakage by piping through dike, and leakage due to the composite effects of landslide and distortion of the dike structure. for the numerical modeling to interpret quantitatively SP survey results acquired at dike, we have modified the computer code proposed by Sill (1983) to apply to the leakage problems. The numerical studies match the characteristic patterns of SP anomalies according to the leakage types and appear to be very useful to interpret the leakage zone and path. The SP monitoring results were also well coincided with tidal variations observed at every embankment so we found the SP method is quite effective not only to detect the leakage zone but also to determine the leakage trend. The numerical modeling results also reproduced the SP anomalies due to seawater leakage in the embankment.

  • In order to traffic safety during winter season, snowfall and cold area has been spread the deicing chemicals, and the spraying amount is increasing every year. Use of deicing chemicals has been and will continue to be a major part of highway snow and ice control methods. Chloride-containing chemicals such as calcium chloride or rock salt are main deicers for the road. Extensive use of chloride deicers is, however, the source of substantial cost penalties due to their corrosive action and acceleration to deterioration concrete structures. • A V-shaped riffle is an artificial hydraulic structure haying two wings from the streamside with a narrow opening in between. It is usually made of crushed stones or large boulders. It limits channel width and accelerates the flow through the constricted section causing a local scour just downstream. The V-shaped riffle provides with a unique aquatic habitat by forming a pool and sandbars around the pool edge, increasing local morphologic, hydraulic and sedimentological diversity. This study investigates experimentally the scour characteristics of the V-shaped riffle in the sandbed stream and proposes a predictive equation for the scour. Total 45 cases of experiments were conducted to examine the effect of hydraulic factors and configuration of V-shaped riffle on the geometry of scour holes. From the comparison of the experimental results of this study with the predictive equation of spur dike by Breusers and Raudkivi(1991), it is found that their predictive equation of spur dike underestimates the maximum scour depth downstream of the V-shaped riffle. h new predictive equation for the maximum scour depth was developed using the non-dimensional hydraulic and geometrical variables. The parameters used in the proposed equations were determined using the experimental data. The analysis reveals that the scour depth is dependent dominantly on the Froude number at the opening of the V-shaped riffle, while the angle of riffle and the opening width also affect the scour depth. The proposed equation for the scour of V-shaped riffle well agrees with the experimental data. It can be used for estimating the scour of the V-shaped riffle in sandbed streams.
