  • Accurate segmentation of histopathology whole slide images (WSIs) is a crucial task for disease diagnosis and treatment planning. However, conventional automated segmentation algorithms may not always be applicable to WSI segmentation due to their large size and variations in tissue appearance, staining, and imaging conditions. Recent advances in interactive segmentation, which combines human expertise with algorithms, have shown promise to improve efficiency and accuracy in WSI segmentation but also presented us with challenging issues. In this paper, we propose a novel interactive segmentation method, ZoomISEG, that leverages multi-resolution WSIs. We demonstrate the efficacy and performance of the proposed method via comparison with conventional single-scale methods and an ablation study. The results confirm that the proposed method can reduce human interaction while achieving accuracy comparable to that of the brute-force approach using the highest-resolution data.

  • Purpose : Many believe that the Sasang mentioned in the I Ching and the Sasang of Sasang Medicine (as expounded by Dr. Lee Je-ma in the book Longevity and Life Preservation in Oriental Medicine) refer to different concepts. This is untrue. In order to understand the thought patterns of Dr. Lee Je-ma and his book, it is necessary to first understand the concepts of the I Ching. The I Ching was the most respected text in Dr. Lee Je-ma time, and served as the foundation upon which his medicine stood. The purpose of this research is to understand the concept of Sasang in the I Ching and how it applies to the Sasang medicine. Method : The authors first defined the term Sasang according to the theory of I Ching. It was then discussed in relation to theories of modern science. Inferences were made as to how Sasang corresponds to the terminologies and concepts of modern science. The characteristics of Sasang interpreted through modern science were then applied to the physiology, pathology and pharmacology of Sasang Medicine. Results and Conclusion : 1. The Sasang theory of the I Ching organizes seemingly random and isolated natural phenomena into four distinct groups according to various attributes. The particular characteristics representing each of these four categories are known as Sasang. 2. The Sasang theory of I Ching has a strong correlation to the Theory of Relativity and the Theory of Complementarity, as well as the Digital and Fractal Theories. 3. By applying the Sasang Theory to various fields, the seemingly unrelated principles of physics, chemistry, biology and medicine can be seen as parts of a whole. 4. Sasang Medicine categorizes human morphology, physiology and pharmacology into four categories according to the characteristics defined by the Sasang Theory of the I Ching. 5. Grouping new discoveries of modern physics, chemistry, biology and medicine according to the Sasang Theory will bring to light the intricacies of the Sasang Theory while facilitating the incorporation of modern science into Sasang Medicine.

  • Purpose: Stereopsis is one of primary characteristics for assessment of binocular function. The purpose of this study was to determine the possible relationship between the degree of exophoria and stereoacuity at near. Methods: 110 exophores (male n=71, female n=39, mean $age{\pm}SD=11.30{\pm}1.47$ years) without amblyopia, strabismus, and ocular and systemic pathology were studied. Subjects were also excluded if they had visual acuity poorer than 0.8 in either eye or vertical phoria greater than 1 prism diopter. Clinical tests were performed for near phorias by von Graefe technique using a Digital Refractor (CDR-3100, Huvitz, Korea) with chart (Predio CDC-4000, Huvitz, Korea), and for stereoacuity using the Titmus fly. Results: A one-way analysis of variance revealed that mean values of the stereoacuity classified according to the degrees of the exophoria were not significantly different (p>0.05). Conclusions: Based on the result of this study, it was found that there was no relationship between the degree of exophoria and stereoacuity.

  • Purpose: Evaluation of vocal cord vibration is very important in cases of voice disorders. There are several equipments for examining the vocal fold vibration such as laryngeal stroboscope, ultra high-speed digital imaging system, and videokymograph. Among these, laryngeal stroboscope is the most popular equipment because of easy to examine the laryngeal pathology. However, current laryngo-stroboscopes are too bulky to move and relatively expensive. The purpose of this research is to develope a portable laryngeal stroboscope of equivalent performance with the current equipments. Methods and Materials: Recently developed high luminescent white LEDs(light emitting diodes) are placed at the head of the endoscope as light sources for the CCD image sensor which is also placed at the head with imaging lens. This arrangement eliminates the bulky light source like expensive halogen or xenon lamps as well as the optical light guiding cables. The LEDs are controlled to flash in phase with the voice frequency of the examinee. The CCD captures these strobo images and converts them into video signals for examinations. Results: There was no functional differences between preexisting stroboscope and the newly developed stroboscope of this study. LED light sources and microprocessor based control circuits of the stroboscope enabled the development of flicker-less, hand-held, portable and battery-operating stroboscope. Conclusion: The developed stroboscope is cost-effective, small-sized, easy to use and very easy desirable to bring and to use in any place.

  • Background Rosa damascena, a type of herb, has been used for wound healing in Eastern folk medicine. The goal of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of rose placenta from R. damascena in a full-thickness wound model in mice. Methods Sixty six-week-old C57BL/6N mice were used. Full-thickness wounds were made with an 8-mm diameter punch. Two wounds were made on each side of the back, and wounds were assigned randomly to the control and experimental groups. Rose placenta ($250{\mu}g$) was injected in the experimental group, and normal saline was injected in the control group. Wound sizes were measured with digital photography, and specimens were harvested. Immunohistochemical staining was performed to assess the expression of epidermal growth factor (EGF), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), transforming growth factor-${\beta}1$ (TGF-${\beta}1$), and CD31. Vessel density was measured. Quantitative analysis using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for EGF was performed. All evaluations were performed on postoperative days 0, 2, 4, 7, and 10. Statistical analyses were performed using the paired t-test. Results On days 4, 7, and 10, the wounds treated with rose placenta were significantly smaller. On day 2, VEGF and EGF expression increased in the experimental group. On days 7 and 10, TGF-${\beta}1$ expression decreased in the experimental group. On day 10, vessel density increased in the experimental group. The increase in EGF on day 2 was confirmed with ELISA. Conclusions Rose placenta was found to be associated with improved wound healing in a mouse full-thickness wound model via increased EGF release. Rose placenta may potentially be a novel drug candidate for enhancing wound healing.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of adding autogenous bone to the toothash-plaster mixture in the healing process of bone. Full-thickness round osseous defects with the diameter of 20mm were made at the calvarial bone of adult dogs (n=19) bilaterally, which were thought to be critical size defect. The right defects were repaired with the toothash-plaster mixture plus autogenous bone (compressed volume 0.3cc) and the left defects with only toothash-plaster mixture. At 2-, 4-, 8-, 12- and 20- week after implantation, dogs were sacrificed and evaluated the osseous healing of bony defects clinically, radiographically, and microscopically. The results were as follows; 1. At the clinical observation, the wound healed very well without any problem except severe swelling in the early period after operation. Slight depression was recognized at the both sides when the portions of cranial defect were palpated. 2. There were statistically significant differences between toothash-plaster mixture groups and autogenous bone added groups at the same period, and among the groups in the bone density of the digital radiograms (P<0.001). There was a tendency that bone density was increasing with time. 3. In light microscopic examination, new bone formation was more active in the autogenous bone added groups than toothash-plaster mixture groups at the early period after implantation but there is little difference at 20-week after implantation. 4. In fluorescent microscopic examination, the fluorescent band could be observed at the area of active bone formation and the band was more distinct in the autogenous bone added groups then toothash-plaster mixture groups. 5. In transmitted electron microscopic examination, organelles such as rER, Golgi complex and secretory granule and osteoblast were observed. In summary higher volume ratio of autogenous bone is needed to improve the bone healing in that there is little difference between toothash-plaster mixture group and autogenous bone added group at the 20-week after implantation in spite of new bone formation was more active in the autogenous bone added groups than toothash-plaster mixture groups at the early period after operation.

  • Purpose: The shape and location, the amount of the wound and the characteristics of the remaining tissues are known to influence wound contraction. The previous studies using small animals have not been an appropriate model because the wound healing mechanisms and skin structures are different from those of the human. The purpose of this study is to evaluate wound contraction according to the shape and location of the wound using a $Micropig^{(R)}$. Methods: Four $Micropigs^{(R)}$ (Medikinetics, Pyeongtaek, Korea) that were 10 months of age weighed 25 kg were used. Full thickness skin defects were made by clearing all the tissues above the fascial layer in the shape of square, a regular triangle and a circle of 9 $cm^2$ each on the back around the spine. Eight wounds were created on the back of each pig, 50 mm apart from each other. The randomly chosen wound shapes included 11 squares, 11 regular triangles, and 10 circles. Wound dressing was done every other day with polyurethane foam. The wound size was measured using a Visitrak $Digital^{(R)}$ (Smith & Nephew, Hull, UK) on every other day after surgery from day 2 to day 28. A biopsy was performed on day 3, and 1, 2, 3 and 4 weeks to investigate the degree of acute and chronic inflammation, the number of microvesssel and myofibroblast density using H & E stain and immunohistochemistry. The wound contraction rate was calculated to figure out the differences among each of the shapes and the locations. Results: The ultimate shape of the circle wound was oval, and that of the regular triangle and square were stellate. The maximum contraction rate was obtained on 8 to 10 days for all the shapes, which corresponds with the immunohistochemical finding that myofibroblast increases in the earlier 2 weeks whereas it decreases in the later 2 weeks. Epithelialization was seen in the wound margin on day 7 and afterwards. The final wound contraction rates were highest for the regular triangle shapes; however, there were no statistically significant differences. The wound contraction rates by locations showed statistically significant differences. The wound in the cephalic area presented more contractions than that of the wounds in the caudal area. Conclusion: The location of a wound is more important factor than the wound shape in wound contraction.

Ultimately, this study was also conducted with the aim of enhancing the perspective of the development of a lifelong education support system for the disabled in connection with schools and communities. The research method consisted of a procedure with a meeting of experts based on the procedure of analyzing the previous research literature that tried to materialize the transition education model for students with disabilities from the viewpoint of connection between school age and adulthood. The contents of this study were reflected in the dimension of ensuring consistent connectivity validity based on the viewpoint of school-centered, community-centered, education, and welfare between special education and lifelong education for the disabled in order to reconstruct the conversion transition education model constructed in the current special education field. Accordingly, the transition education model for students with disabilities built in the field of special education centered on school age minimizes the tendency of a fragmented approach between school age and adulthood, and presents a standard basis and structure that can be linked to the entire adulthood. The transition education model was reconstructed convergence in terms of content.

  • The purpose of this study is to explore the internal foundation of lifelong education for the disabled. The composition system of the meaning of contents for this purpose is divided into three elements: 'of' which means subject based on lifelong education for the disabled, 'for' which means purpose, and 'from' which means practical main base. The research method was to discuss the academic basis, practical application model and plan, or to analyze the literature through the previous studies that were actualized in order to form the internal foundation of the support system for lifelong education for the disabled. Second, the expert meeting was conducted to improve the specificity of the research contents based on the basis of the literature analysis. The contents of this study are presented in two main ways: the foundation of developmental disabilities and the foundation of schools by synthesizing the main bases of subjects, purposes, and practical base required to form the internal foundation of lifelong education for the disabled. The above two factors first establish the internal universality of the support system for lifelong education for the disabled, and in connection with the types of sensory disabilities and the general lifelong education. As a result, the long-term stability of the overall support system for lifelong education for the disabled was analyzed.

  • A curriculum of study demands a change as period of time and society evolve. Therefore, at this point where changes are required, this study is to analyze and evaluate the curriculums which will enhance and improve current studies as a preceding stage. The research was based on the survey by groups of education experts and 19 universities with current curriculum of study in radiologic science, and their references. The study was focused on the scope of work by radiologic technologist, change of college systems, academic research about radiologic science, and the improvement and the future of radiologic science field in perspective to globalization and the digital era. In terms of work scope, angiography and interventional radiology at 6 to 8 schools, fluoroscopy at 4 schools, ultrasound and practices at 6 schools, magnetic resonance image at 2 schools were found to be unestablished. The basic medical subjects, humuan physiology, human anatomy and practices, medical terminology courses were set up at most schools; however, pathology at 5 schools, image anatomy at 6 schools, clinical medicine at 11 schools were yet opened. Among the basic science and engineering subjects, general biology and its practices at 11 schools, general physics and its practices at 14 schools, and general chemistry and its practices at 8 schools were established which is about a half from a total number of schools. Only 4-5 schools established digital subjects such as, health computer, computer programming, PACS which are the basic major subjects. In order to provide academic improvement in radiologic science, digitalized education and globalization, and basis for future-oriented education for the field of radiologic science, including expanded scope of work, it is acknowledged that curriculums that are opened and run at each school need to be standardized. Therefore, the need for introduction of certificate for the radiologic science education courses are suggested.
