  • Purpose: The aim of this study was to investigate the use and acceptance of digital radiographic examinations by Brazilian dental practitioners in daily practice and to evaluate the advances that have occurred over the past 5 years. Materials and Methods: Dental practitioners enrolled in extension courses at the Piracicaba Dental School, University of Campinas, Brazil, responded to a selfadministered questionnaire in the years 2011 and 2015. They were asked about sociodemographic factors and their knowledge and use of digital radiographic examinations. Descriptive analysis was performed, as well as the chi-square and Fisher exact tests, with a significance level of 5% (${\alpha}=0.05$). results: A total of 181 participants responded to the questionnaire in the years 2011 and 2015. Most of the respondents worked in private practice, had graduated within the last 5 years, and were between 20 and 30 years old. In 2011, 55.6% of respondents reported having ever used digital radiographic examinations, while in 2015 this number increased significantly to 85.4% (p<.0001), out of which 71.4% preferred it to conventional images. Moreover, 21.4% of respondents reported having used digital radiographic examinations for more than 3 years. A significant increase in use of intraoral digital radiography (p = 0.0316) was observed in 2015. In both years, image quality and high cost were indicated, respectively, as the main advantage and disadvantage of digital radiographic examinations. conclusion: This study showed that digital radiology has become more common in Brazil over the past 5 years. Most of the Brazilian dental practitioners evaluated in 2015 used digital radiographic examinations.

  • This paper is concerned with the development of a simple digital stethoscope system for diagnosis of cardiac disorders. This system consists of an electronic stethoscope, IC sound recorder and a notebook computer. The cardiac sound is easily acquired by the electronic stethoscope and then recorded in IC memory stick so that the digital cardiac signal can be simply transmitted to the computer for signal display, disease diagnosis, and personal history record. A software is built with functions displaying the sound graphically and replaying the sound clearly. Further, a neural network recognition system for automatic diagnosis of cardiac disorders is also added to the software.

  • This study is aimed at building up an Ontology to solve the discrepancy of terminologies between teachers and students by showing, through Ontology, the knowledge for diagnosis of underachieving students. Also this study makes it possible to infer the diagnosis based on information of these underachieving students. In addition, while a general Underachieving Students diagnosis system shows special diagnosis, this Ontology system helps users obtain correct concepts through this knowledge based system, and suggest building an Ontology to extend unclear conceptual knowledge to clearer ones.

  • Many system devices for fluoroscopic and general X-ray studies in diagnostic radiographic system have been being changed from analog mode to digital mode. In addition, among diagnostic imaging and radiologic examinations, fluoroscopic studies that requires functional diagnosis is being widely used. The video recording method of fluoroscopic studies has been useful in functional image diagnosis and dynamic image observation, but the utility of its image quality is being reduced because of limitation in setting play segments of the video player, inconvenience of play, difficulties in preserving reproduced images, the change of image quality, etc. In order to complement these shortages, it is necessary to facilitate access to patient diagnosis information such as storing, editing and sharing functional diagnosis images in response to the trend of the digitalization of digital radiographic & fluoroscopic system(DRF). Thus this study designed and implemented a device of storing functional dynamic images real time using a computer rather than existing video recording, aiming at contribution to functional image diagnosis.

  • Accurate and efficient microbial diagnosis is crucial for effective molecular diagnostics, especially in the field of human healthcare. The gold standard equipment widely employed for detecting specific microorganisms in molecular diagnosis is quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR). However, its limitations in low metagenomic DNA yield samples necessitate exploring alternative approaches. Digital PCR, by quantifying the number of copies of the target sequence, provides absolute quantification results for the bacterial strain. In this study, we compared the diagnostic efficiency of qRT-PCR and digital PCR in detecting a particular bacterial strain (Staphylococcus aureus), focusing on skin-derived DNA samples. Experimentally, specific primer for S. aureus were designed at transcription elongation factor (greA) gene and the target amplicon were cloned and sequenced to validate efficiency of specificity to the greA gene of S. aureus. To quantify the absolute amount of microorganisms present on the skin, the variable region 5 (V5) of the 16S rRNA gene was used, and primers for S. aureus identification were used to relative their amount in the subject's skin. The findings demonstrate the absolute convenience and efficiency of digital PCR in microbial diagnostics. We suggest that the high sensitivity and precise quantification provided by digital PCR could be a promising tool for detecting specific microorganisms, especially in skin-derived DNA samples with low metagenomic DNA yields, and that further research and implementation is needed to improve medical practice and diagnosis.

  • According to the American Cancer Society, breast cancer is the second largest cause of cancer deaths and most frequently diagnosed cancer in women. The currently most popular method for early detection of breast cancer is the digital mammography. A mass or calcification lesion has been known as the most important clue for the diagnosis. In this paper, we propose a diagnosis approach based on fuzzy cluster knowledge base. We combine different two sources of feature data in duel OFUN-NET and produce the diagnosis result with possibility degree. We also present the experimental results on the dataset of mass and calcification lesions extracted from the public real world mammogram database DDSM. These results show higher classification accuracy than conventional methods and the feasibility as a decision supporting tool for diagnosis of digital mammogram.

  • The main objective of pathologists is to achieve accurate lesion diagnoses, which has become increasingly challenging due to the growing number of pathological slides that need to be examined. However, using digital technology has made it easier to complete this task compared to older methods. Digital pathology is a specialized field that manages data from digitized specimen slides, utilizing image processing technology to automate and improve analysis. It aims to enhance the precision, reproducibility, and standardization of pathology-based researches, preclinical, and clinical trials through the sophisticated techniques it employs. The advent of whole slide imaging (WSI) technology is revolutionizing the pathology field by replacing glass slides as the primary method of pathology evaluation. Image processing technology that utilizes WSI is being implemented to automate and enhance analysis. Artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms are being developed to assist pathologic diagnosis and detection and segmentation of specific objects. Application of AI-based digital pathology in biomedical researches is classified into four areas: diagnosis and rapid peer review, quantification, prognosis prediction, and education. AI-based digital pathology can result in a higher accuracy rate for lesion diagnosis than using either a pathologist or AI alone. Combining AI with pathologists can enhance and standardize pathology-based investigations, reducing the time and cost required for pathologists to screen tissue slides for abnormalities. And AI-based digital pathology can identify and quantify structures in tissues. Lastly, it can help predict and monitor disease progression and response to therapy, contributing to personalized medicine.

  • The purpose of this study was to measured the diameter, maximum diameter, maximum area and volume of the cerebral aneurysm in 53 patients who underwent three-dimensional digital angiography and three-dimensional digital subtraction angiography, which were used for the clinical diagnosis of cerebral aneurysm, image noise and radiation exposure dose of each test method were analyzed to compare clinical diagnosis differences in the cerebral aneurysm diagnosis. Three-dimensional digital angiography and three-dimensional digital subtraction angiography showed that the neck diameter, maximum diameter, maximum area, volume, and noise of the cerebral aneurysm were identical or very small. However, the three-dimensional digital angiography significantly decreased the radiation exposure dose compared to three-dimensional digital subtraction angiography. Therefore, in case of clinical diagnosis of cerebral aneurysm, three-dimensional digital angiography should be preferentially used to reduce radiation exposure dose of patient.
