  • A new digital pre-distortion (DPD) technique for closely spaced dual-band signals is proposed. In the system under consideration, dual-band signals are amplified by a single broadband power amplifier (PA) at a transmitter. The PA output is distorted by cross-modulation between the two bands as well as their own inter-modulation distortion. Especially, if the two bands are placed in close proximity to each other, their spectral regrowths due to in-band intermodulation overlap with each other, which degrades DPD performance. To solve this problem, we propose a new DPD technique where the dual-band PA characteristics are estimated first, and then the DPD parameters are obtained from the estimated PA characteristics. By finding the DPD parameters through two steps, pre-distortion can perform well for the closely-spaced dual band signals. The proposed technique is verified through computer simulation. Simulation result shows that the proposed method performs better than the conventional method for closely-spaced dual band signals.

  • In this paper, we design a SSD(simultaneous single band duplex) system using RF cancellation and digital cancellation. And then, we analyze performance of the SSD system using pre-distorter with HPA non-linearity. Also, we analyze digital cancellation performance of the SSD system using pre-distorter with HPA non-linearity. Additionally, digital cancellation cancels residual self-interference. In linear conditions, digital cancellation can cancel self-interference of 40dB. Therefore, the SSD system has good BER performance because most of self-interference is canceled. But, in HPA non-linearity conditions, digital cancellation cancels residual self-interference of 25dB. In this conditions, self-interference is greater than desired signal. Therefore, bit informations of distant station can not be received. But, we confirm that if the proposed system uses pre-distorter then bit information of distant station can be received by HPA non-linearity compensation. Also, we confirm that even though the proposed system uses pre-distorter, if HPA non-linearity increases then digital cancellation performance is degraded by imperfect compensation of HPA non-linerity.

  • This paper shows some variable bias techniques which can improve the power added efficiency(PAE) for the designed power amplifier. Some simulations have been done to get the effect of the bias change, and variable bias is adopted to get the higher efficiency for dual mode amplifier which generates two different output power levels. With drain bias change and a fixed gate bias, the amplifier shows PAE improvement compared to the fixed bias amplifier. In addition, this paper analyzed nonlinear distortion of the power amplifier and has used the digital predistortion which can result in 10dB ACPR improvement for the dual band amplifier.

  • A power amplifier (PA) for a femto-cell base station should be highly efficient, linear and small. The efficiency for amplification of a high peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) signal was improved by designing an asymmetric Doherty PA (DPA). The linearity was improved by applying third-order inter-modulation (IM3) cancellation method. A small size is achieved by designing the DPA using GaN MMIC process. The implemented 2-stage DPA delivers a power-added efficiency (PAE) of 38.6% and a gain of 33.4 dB with an average power of 34.2 dBm for a 7.2 dB PAPR 10 MHz bandwidth LTE signal at 2.14 GHz.

  • A new predistortion technique for dynamic spectrum allocation systems such as cognitive radio (CR) is proposed. The system model considered in this paper occupies a small band at a time, but the center frequency can be changed in the wide range of frequency. In this scenario. the front-end filter may not eliminate the harmonics of the power amplifier (PA) output. The proposed PD reduces the spectral regrowth of the fundamental signal at the carrier frequency (${\omega}_0$) and removes the harmonics ($2{\omega}_0$, $3{\omega}_0$, ...) at the same time. The proposed PD structure is composed of multiple predistorters (PDs) centered at integer multiples of ${\omega}_0$. The PD at ${\omega}_0$ is for removing spectral regrowth of the fundamental signal, and the others are for harmonic reduction. In the proposed PD structure, parameters of PDs are found jointly. Simulation results show that the spectral regrowth can be reduced by 20dB, and the 2nd and 3rd harmonics can be reduced down to -70dB from the power of the fundamental signal.

  • Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) is an attractive technique for achieving high-bit-rate wireless data transmission. However, multicarrier systems such as OFDM show great sensitivity to nonlinear distortion. The OFDM structure requires a summation of a large number of subcarriers for multicarrier modulation, and as a result of this summation large signal envelope fluctuations occur. These fluctuations make OFDM systems to be very sensitive to nonlinear distortion introduced by the high power amplifier (HPA) at the transmitter. In this paper, we propose a canonical piecewise-linear (CPWL) model based digital predistorter to compensate for nonlinear distortion introduced by the high peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) and the HPA in OFDM systems. The performance of the new predistortion scheme for OFDM systems is evaluated in terms of total degradation (TD) and bit error rate (BER). The simulation results demonstrated that the proposed predistorter achieves significant performance improvement by effectively compensating for the nonlinear distortion introduced by the HPA.

  • We have described a high power hybrid envelope elimination and restoration(H-EER) transmitter for IEEE 802.16e Mobile World Interoperability for Microwave Access(WiMAX) using an efficiency optimized power amplifier(PA). The PA has been designed to have maximum PAE at the important power generation $V_{ds}$, region using Nitronex 100-W PEP GaN HEMT. For the high power application, H-EER transmitter should be considered the regenerative oscillation problem due to the PA's bias fluctuation effect and bias modulator stability issue. Therefore, the bias modulator for H-EER transmitter has been designed to suppress the regenerative oscillation. For the interlock experiment, the bias modulator has been built with the efficiency of 72% and peak output voltage of 30 V for the envelope signal with a PAPR of 8.5 dB. The H-EER transmitter for WiMAX application has been achieved a high PAE characteristic, 38.8 % at an output power of 41.25 dBm. By using digital predistortion(DPD) technique, the Relative Constellation Error (RCE) has been satisfied the specification of -34.5 dB. This is the first work at 2.655 GHz high power H-EER transmitter for WiMAX application.
