  • In this note, we characterize the limiting diffusion of a diploid model by defining the discrete generator for the resealed Markov chain. We conclude that this limiting diffusion model is with uncountable state space and mutation selection and special 'mutation or gene conversion rate'.

  • Nonlinear dynamic behavior of diffusive-thermal instability in diluted CH$_4$/O$_2$ diffusion flames is numerically investigated by adopting detailed chemistry and transport. Counterflow diffusion flame is adopted as a model flamelet. Particular attention is focused on the pulsating-instability regime, which arises for Lewis numbers greater than unity, and the instability occurs at high strain rate near extinction condition in this flame configuration. Once a steady flame structure is obtained for a prescribed value of initial strain rate, transient solution of the flame is calculated after a finite amount of strain-rate perturbation is imposed on the steady flame. Transient evolution of the flame depends on the initial strain rate and the amount of perturbed strain rate. Basically, the dynamic behaviors can be classified into two types, namely non-oscillatory decaying solution and diverging solution leading to extinction. The peculiar oscillatory solution, which has been found in the previous study adopting one-step chemistry and constant Lewis numbers, is net observed in this study, which is attributed to both convective flow and preferential diffusion effects.

  • Extinction and ignition characteristics of $CH_4$-air counterflow diffusion flame were numerically investigated using a Flame-Controlling Method(FCM). A skeletal reaction mechanism, which adopts 17 species and 58 reactions, was used in the simulation. The extinction and ignition conditions of the $CH_4$-air diffusion flames were investigated with varying the global strain rate. Upper and middle branches of S-curve for the peak temperature in the inverse of the global strain rate space were obtained with the FCM. The structures of diffusion flames in the upper and middle branches of S-curve were compared. It was found that the global strain rate was not correlated with the local strain rate well in the low global strain rate region. It is expected that the FCM is very useful to obtaining the extinction and ignition condition of diffusion flame, such as fires.

  • A study has been conducted to clarify NO emission behavior through preferential diffusion effects of $H_2$ and H in methane-hydrogen diffusion flames. A comparison is made by employing three species diffusion models. Special concerns are focused on what is the deterministic role of the preferential diffusion effects in flame structure and NO emission. The behavior of maximum flame temperatures with three species diffusion models is not explained by scalar dissipation rate but the nature of chemical kinetics. The preferential diffusion of H into reaction zone suppresses the populations of the chain carrier radicals and then flame temperature while that of $H_2$ produces the increase of flame temperature. These preferential diffusion effects of $H_2$ and H are also discussed about NO emissions through the three species diffusion models.

  • Flammability limits of opposed flow diffusion flame in a narrow channel was investigated experimentally and theoretically. There were three different extinction modes corresponding to high strain rate (HSR), low strain rate (LSR) and dilution ratio (DR) limits. To investigate these limits, a theoretical study was followed by focusing on flow and heat transfer characteristics. Consequently, a dead space concept that has been used for premixed flames was important to reveal the heat loss mechanism in a narrow channel especially for LSR conditions even in the case of diffusion flames.

  • Numerical study is conducted to grasp preferential diffusion effects on flame characteristics in $H_2/CO$ syn-gas diffusion flames diluted with $CO_2$. The models of Sun et al. and David et al., which have been well known to be best-fitted for $H_2/CO$ synthetic mixture flames. are evaluated for $H_2/CO$ synthetic mixture flames diluted with $CO_2$. Comparison of flame structures with mixture-averaged species diffusion and suppression of the diffusivities of $H_2$ and H was made. The behaviors of maximum flame temperatures with those species diffusion models are not explained by scalar dissipation rate but by the nature of chemical kinetics. Importantly-contributing reaction steps to heat release rate are also compared for the three species diffusion models in $H_2/CO/CO_2$ flames with and without $CO_2$ dilution.

  • Methyl red diffusion in polymer solutions was studied by a transient holographic method, forced Rayleigh scattering. In semi-dilute solutions of a polystyrene, where no specific interaction with the probe exists, we found within experimental uncertainty that the retardation of diffusion rate of methyl red is independent of the solvents used. This indicates that the hydrodynamic interaction in polymer coils is not affected by the nature of solvents enough to exhibit a detectable change in the diffusion rate of the probe. On the other hand, a substantial reduction of diffusion rate was observed in poly(methyl methacrylate) solutions in toluene. Together with the similar observation reported with poly(vinyl acetate), it is confirmed that hydrogen bond between the probe and the polymer is responsible for the retarded diffusion. The decay-growth-decay profile found in this system reveals a finite difference in diffusion coefficients of cis and trans isomer of methyl red. We estimate the difference and suggest that the cis isomer interacts with the polymer more strongly than the trans isomer.

  • In order to observe the pattern forming of copper plate and chemical corrosion reaction, a study on the effect of the process parameters on the formation of micro-pattern by a photochemical etching of copper plate was carried out. The results are as follows : 1) Etching rate increases as the concentration of etchant increases under the regular condition of the temperature by the increasing of diffusion rate to surface. 2) Etching rate increases as the temperature of etchant increases by the fast acting of the material delivery of diffusion to surface under the regular condition of concentration. 3) It was found that etching speed increases as the material delivery of convection rising increased when the aeration speed of etchant increases. This result was from the fact acted by the material delivery of convection rising rather than material delivery of diffusion to the surface.
