  • Monitoring of dermal collagen is important to assess various scar conditions, and many diagnostic methods have been applied to quantify collagen contents in scar tissue. In this study, Monte Carlo simulation was used to evaluate diffuse reflectance distributions in scar condition by a near-infrared laser source. The results showed that the effective distance of the light source and the detector was 2 mm to monitor the various scar conditions using diffuse reflectance spectroscopy. This study may suggest to the optimal design for a near infrared diffuse reflectance spectroscopy during the scar treatment.

  • A new approach is presented for recovering the 3-D shape from shading image. Photometric Stereo Method (PSM) is generally based on the direct illumination. In this paper, the reflectance function is derived by introduceing the indirect diffuse illumination in PSM and then applied to hybrid reflectance model which consists fo two components; the Lambertian reflectance and the speclar reflectance. Under the hybrid reflectance model and the indirect diffuse illumination circumstances, the 3-D shape of object can be recovered from the suface normal vector extracted from the surface roughness, the surface reflectance ratio, and the intensity value of a pixel. This method is rapid because of using the reference table and simplifies the restriction condition about the reflectance function existing in prior studies. The recovery efficiency in our method is better than that in prior studies. Also, this method is applied to various types of surfaces by defining general reflectance function.

  • The main interest of previous researches for shape from shading was only on Lambertian surface which consists of diffuse reflectance surface. In practice, natural objects have hybrid reflectance, which limits the recovery of shape from intensity distribution[1][2]. In this paper, we propose the method of determining shape using neural network and diffuse illumination. The segmented region of sphere surface is used for training set, which can be determined by shadow line and edge of surface. Diffuse illumination is used to avoid specular spike and highlight which usually cause many problems such as intensity disparities. Diffuse illumination method using flat paper allows us to reduce these phenomena with simple scheme. Neural network and Diffuse illumination method are useful for shape from shading, because it can be applied to objects of unknown reflectance properties, but it is applied only to Torrance-Sparrow style reflectance.

  • Pain is one of the quite common symptoms in clinics and many treatment methods have been applied to relieve pain. Among the treatments, high-intensity light therapy for pain has been introduced, but this therapy has not been fully supported by confirmed efficacy due to the absence of quantitative assessments and treatment feedback data in real time. In this study, the evaluation of light distribution in tissue was performed with current high-intensity light sources quantitatively using light-tissue interaction simulations. The diffuse reflectance in tissue was generated using Monte Carlo simulation that traces photons as they undergo multiple scattering and absorption within each tissue layer (skin, fat, and muscle) and within multi-layered tissue. The results showed that the highest diffuse reflectance and the deepest penetration of tissue were achieved at ${\lambda}$=830 nm when compared with other wavelengths like ${\lambda}$=650 nm, 980 nm and 1064 nm.

  • Optical diffuse reflectance sensing in visible and near-infrared wavelength ranges is one approach to rapidly quantify soil properties for site-specific management. The objectives of this study were to investigate effects of preprocessing of reflectance data and determine the accuracy of the reflectance approach for estimating physical and chemical properties of selected Missouri and Illinois, USA surface soils encompassing a wide range of soil types and textures. Diffuse reflectance spectra of air-dried, sieved samples were obtained in the laboratory. Calibrations relating spectra to soil properties determined by standard methods were developed using partial least squares (PLS) regression. The best data preprocessing, consisting of absorbance transformation and mean centering, reduced estimation errors by up to 20% compared to raw reflectance data. Good estimates ($R^2=0.83$ to 0.92) were obtained using spectral data for soil texture fractions, organic matter, and CEC. Estimates of pH, P, and K were not good ($R^2$ < 0.7), and other approaches to estimating these soil chemical properties should be investigated. Overall, the ability of diffuse reflectance spectroscopy to accurately estimate multiple soil properties across a wide range of soils makes it a good candidate technology for providing at least a portion of the data needed in site-specific management of agriculture.

  • This study investigated the reflection spectra of wrinkled metal/polymer multilayers. A wavy surface was self-assembled by annealing an aluminum-coated poly(methyl metacrylate) layer on a silicon substrate. The total and diffuse reflectance characteristics of the sample with additional metal coatings(aluminum or silver) were evaluated in the visible wavelength(400~800 nm) using a spectrophotometer. The results showed that the wrinkled surface enhanced the diffuse reflectance up to 40~50% in the lower-wavelength range, demonstrating its potential for applications to optical thin-film devices.

  • In this paper we propose a new method for anlayzing the properties of surface reflectance and reconstructing the shape of object using estimated reflectance parameters. We have investigated the hybrid reflectance surface which has specularreflection and diffuse reflection, which can be explained by Torrance-Sparrow model. Sample sphere made on one maerial is used to estimate the reflectance properties by using LMS algorithm. We can make the reference image which consists of surface normal and brightness value using estimated reflectance parameters, and thenarbitrary shape object made of the same material as sample can be reconstructed by matching with reference image. Photometric matching method proposed in this paper is robust because it mateches object image with the reference imageconsidering its neighbor brightness distribution. Also, in this paper plate diffuse illumination is used to remove intensity disparity with simple scheme. It is expected that the proposed algorithm can be applied to 3D recognition, vision inspection system and other fields.
