An unobstructed off-axis two-mirror system is presented in this paper. First a suitable initial configuration is established based on third-order aberration theory. In order to achieve a wide field of view (FOV) with high image quality , the diffractive mirror is adopted in the two-mirror system to increase the optimization freedom and the aberration relationship between diffractive phase coefficients and Zernike coefficients is derived. Furthermore, a complete comparison design example with a focal length of 1200 mm, F-number of 12, and FOV of 40° × 2° is given to verify the aberration correction ability of the diffractive mirror. The system average wavefront error is 0.007 λ (λ=0.6328 μm) developed from 0.061 λ when the system didn’t adopt the diffractive mirror. In this system the phase modulation function of the diffractive mirror is established as an even function of x, so we could obtain a symmetrical imaging quality about the tangential plane, and the symmetric aberration performance also brings considerable convenience to alignment and testing for the system.
The Near to Eye Display (NED) solves the problem of having a display larger than a small portable device. The virtual image of the NED is created using a microdisplay and imaging optics. It is important that the optics does not interfere with the human visual system and that the device is light, compact and easy to wear. In this paper the principles of a biocular NED, which is based on a novel diffractive Exit Pupil Expander (EPE), are presented. The optical system is compact and intrinsically free from distortions and misalignments.

Diffractive- and micro-optics technology Provides new degrees of freedom for the design and optimization of optical systems. In this talk emphasis will be placed on recent advances in the design and fabrication of precision, micro- structured optical elements and their applications in the optical telecommunication, vision-care, illumination and display markets. An F/1.2 infrared optical system that involves two aspheric BD-2 lenses and an aspheric diffractive surface was designed over $8-14{\mu}m$ with a field angle of $15.2^{\circ}$. The system may be used in uncooled cameras and is analyzed using beam synthesis propagation (BSP). The diffractive surface is modeled as a physical surface with a given thickness, and results are compared with those obtained by conventional methods, such as the exit-pupil method and a method which superposes diffraction orders.
The laser has been regarded as the potential illumination source for the next generation of projectors. However, currently the major issues in applying the laser as an illumination source for projectors are beam shaping and laser speckle. We present a compact solution for both issues by using a vibrating diffractive optical element (DOE). The DOE is designed and fabricated, and it successfully transforms the circular Gaussian laser beam to a low speckle contrast uniform rectangular pattern. Under a vibration frequency of 150 Hz and amplitude of $200{\mu}m$, the speckle contrast value is reduced from 67.67% to 13.78%, and the ANSI uniformity is improved from 24.36% to 85.54%. The experimental results demonstrate the feasibility and potential of the proposed scheme, and the proposed method is a feasible approach to the miniaturization of laser projection display illumination systems.

Diffractive Optical Elements(DOEs) diffracts incident light using the diffraction phenomenon of light to generate a desired diffraction image. In recent years, the use of diffraction optics, which can replace existing refractive optical elements with flat plates, has been increased by implementing various optical functions that could not be implemented in refractive optical devices and by becoming miniaturized and compacted optical elements. Direct laser lithography is typically used to effectively fabrication such a diffractive optical element in a large area with a low process cost. In this study, the process conditions for fabricating patterns of diffractive optical elements in various shapes were found using direct laser lithographic system, and optical performance evaluation was performed through fabrication.
Recent flat-panel displays have become increasingly complicated to facilitate multiple display functions. In particular, the form of multilayered architectures for next-generation displays makes precise three-dimensional alignment of multiple panels a challenge. In this paper, a diffractive optical alignment marker is proposed to address the problem of three-dimensional alignment of distant dual panels beyond the depth-of-focus of a vision camera. The diffractive marker is effective to analyze the positional correlation of distant dual panels. The possibility of diffractive alignment in multilayer display fabrication is testified with numerical simulation and a proof-of-concept experiment.
A novel image quality evaluation method, which is based on combination of the rigorous grating diffraction theory and the ray-optic method, is proposed. It is applied for design optimization and, tolerance analysis of optical imaging systems implementing diffractive optical elements (DOE). The evaluation method can predict the quality and resolution of the image on the image sensor plane through the optical imaging system. Especially, we can simulate the effect of diffraction efficiencies of DOE in the camera lenses module, which is very effective for predicting different color sense and MTF performance. Using this method, we can effectively determine the fabrication tolerances of diffractive and refractive optical elements such as the variations' in profile thickness, and the shoulder of the DOE, as well as conventional parameters such as decenter and tilt in optical-surface alignments. A DOE-based 2M-resolution camera lens module designed by the optimization process based on the proposed image quality evaluation method shows ${\sim}15%$ MTF improvement compared with a design without such an optimization.

In this paper, we propose novel optics design for media inside near-field recording (NFR) using hemispherical solid immersion lens (HMS). To obtain strong advantage of data protection and high data capacity simultaneously, HMS based near field optics using aplanatic position of super hemisphere is designed. In this design, to improve small optical tolerance of this aplanatic position, additional aspheric lens surface is added on top of the HMS and it is combined with zoom optics which composed of two single lenses having low numerical aperture (NA). Also, to compensate chromatic aberration which happens seriously in optics using blue laser diode, diffractive optical element is used. Using zoom optics, additional aspheric lens surface, and diffractive optical element together, wavefront aberration and chromatic aberration are effectively reduced in broad range of cover layer thickness and wavelength variation. In addition, In this paper, effect of gap induced aberration is investigated by analyzing different behavior of each TM and TE wave for designed media inside dual-layer NFR optics.
