Recently the geogrids are being used in some large projects such as Inchon International Airport construction, highway construction, and Korean High-Speed Railway construction with not only the merit of simple construction but also reinforcing efficiency for the soft ground. Main function of roadbed is to provide a stable foundation in terms of bearing capacity and settlement for the subballast and ballsat layers. Differential settlement of the railroad should be avoided. The cyclic laboratory model tests were performed to investigate the settlement behavior of geogrid reinforced railroadbed. The ratio of settlement of roadbed under cyclic loading with three layers of geogrid reinforced is less than 1/2 of the roadbed thickness without reinforcement.

In this study, sand compaction pile method was adopted to improve the soft ground under the permanent dyke, namely west sea dyke of Incheon New Port. The row replacement ratio 30% was applied to consider the ground condition, environmental side and the construction cost of the site. The stability and displacement analysis was carried out by respectively SLOPE/W and PLAXIS 2D program. Based on this analysis, it is found that the safety factor and displacement is within an allowable criteria. The model experiment was carried out using the acryl soil box with $400(H){\times}1200(L){\times}250(W)mm$ to show the displacement of the dyke and behavior of soft ground. Based on this experiment results, it is found that the settlement does not occur from 1 and 2 loading phases and horizontal displacement of 0.0075% occurs from 2 phases. It is also found that the differential settlement occurs 0.05mm corresponding respectively 0.02% and 0.03% of the dyke height(15cm).
The load sharing ratio (${\alpha}_{pr}$) of piles is one of the most common problems in the preliminary design of piled raft foundations. A series of 3D numerical analysis are conducted so that special attentions are given to load sharing characteristics under varying conditions, such as pile configuration, pile diameter, pile length, raft thickness, and settlement level. Based on the 3D FE analysis, influencing factors on load sharing behavior of piled raft are investigated. As a result, it is shown that the load sharing ratio of piled raft decreases with increasing settlement level. The load sharing ratio is not only highly dependent on the system geometries of the foundation but also on the settlement level. Based on the results of parametric studies, the load sharing ratio is proposed as a function of the various influencing factors. In addition, the parametric analyses suggest that the load sharing ratios to minimize the differential settlement of piled raft are ranging from 15 to 48% for friction pile and from 15 to 54% for end-bearing pile. The recommendations can provide a basis for an optimum design that would be applicable to piled rafts taking into account the load sharing characteristics.

This paper presents a case study that achieved both of serviceability and safety of the building through soil reinforcement and restoration around foundations subjected to serious differential settlement using D-ROG method. The building which has one basement floor and three ground floors is founded on soft ground and differential settlement occurred to the maximum extent of 678mm. The foundation type of the building is a independent mat foundation. Soil profiles consist of landfill layer, alluvial layer, weathered rock, and soft rock. The bearing layer consisting of gravel and weathered rock is located 16.0~17.0m below the bottom of the building. As a result of soil reinforcement and restoration, the recovery ratio of more than 90% can be attained with the maximum set-up of 657mm.
Pile or column supported embankments have been increasingly employed to construct highway or railway embankments over soft soils. Piles or columns of stiffer material installed in the soft ground can provide the necessary support by transferring the embankment load to a firm stratum using a soil arching. However, there has been reported to occur a relatively large differential settlement between the piles and the untreated soils. Geosynthetic reinforced pile or column supported embankment (GRPS) is often used to minimize the differential settlement. Two dimensional finite element anlyses have been performed on both the column supported embankments and the geogrid reinforced column supported embankments by using a PLAXIS 2D to evaluate the soil arching effect. Based on the results obtained from finite element analyses, the stress reduction ratio decreases as the area replacement ratio increases in the column supported embankments. For the geogrid reinforced column supported embankments, the geogrid reinforcemnt can reduce differential settlements effectively. In additon, the use of stiffer geogrid is appeared to be more effective in reducing the differential settlements.
Pile composite foundation (PCF) has been commonly applied in practice. Existing research has focused primarily on semi-infinite media having equal pile lengths with little attention given to the effects of inclined bedrock and dissimilar pile lengths. This investigation considers the effects of inclined bedrock on vertical loaded PCF with dissimilar pile lengths. The pile-soil system is decomposed into fictitious piles and extended soil. The Fredholm integral equation about the axial force along fictitious piles is then established based on the compatibility of axial strain between fictitious piles and extended soil. Then, an iterative procedure is induced to calculate the PCF characteristics with a rigid cap. The results agree well with two field load tests of a single pile and numerical simulation case. The settlement and load transfer behaviors of dissimilar 3-pile PCFs and the effects of inclined bedrock are analyzed, which shows that the embedded depth of the inclined bedrock significantly affects the pile-soil load sharing ratios, non-dimensional vertical stiffness N0/wdEs, and differential settlement for different length-diameter ratios of the pile l/d and pile-soil stiffness ratio k conditions. The differential settlement and pile-soil load sharing ratios are also influenced by the inclined angle of the bedrock for different k and l/d. The developed model helps better understand the PCF characteristics over inclined bedrock under vertical loading.
In this study, the load carrying behavior of piled rafts installed in inclined bearing rock layer was investigated for rock-mounted and -socketed conditions. It was found that settlements induced for an inclined bearing rock layer are larger than for a horizontal layer condition. The load capacity of piled rafts for the rock-mounted condition decreased as rock-layer inclination angle (${\theta}$) increased, while vice versa for the rock-socketed condition. The load capacities of raft and piles both decreased with increasing ${\theta}$ for the rock-mounted condition. When bearing rock layer was inclined, loads carried by uphill-side piles were greater than those by downhill-side piles. The values of differential settlements of rock-mounted and -socketed conditions were not significantly different whereas slightly higher for the rock-socketed condition. The values of load sharing ratio (${\alpha}_p$) and its variation with settlement were not markedly changed by the inclination of bedrock. It was shown that ${\alpha}_p$ for piled rafts installed in rock layer was not affected by ${\theta}$ whereas actual loads carried by raft and piles may vary depending on the pile installation and rock-layer inclination conditions.
In the present study, 2-D consolidation theory of the dredged clay by means of the horizontal drain method is proposed. The horizontal drain method to install the drains such as plastic drain board within the dredged clay is a soil improvement method to accelerate the consolidation by expelling pore water in the vertical direction along the horizontal drains. Based on the finite strain consolidation theory by Gibson et al., the partial differential equation of 2-D consolidation due to the horizontal drain is derived. The consolidation due to the horizontal drain can be illustrated from combined self-weight consolidation effect and consolidation effect by horizontal drains. For the prediction of consolidation settlement and degree of consolidation numerical analysis is suggested on the basis of Dufort-Frankel finite differential algorithm. Also, the analytical procedures proposed in this study are verified by the model tests, and the predictions of the consolidation settlement and degree of consolidation are compared with the results obtained from the tests for the dredged clay gathering at Siwha site in Ansan, Korea. For the predictions, the relationship void ratio vs effective stress and the relationship permeability vs void ratio of the dredged clay are obtained from the odometer tests. Additionally, the parametric study for consolidation settlement by variations of design parameters related with horizontal drain method is carried out. Based on the results of the parametric study, design .charts for the preliminary design are also proposed.
Population concentration in urban areas has led traffic management a central issue. To mitigate traffic congestions, the government has planned to construct large-cross-section tunnels deep underground. This study focuses on estimating the damage caused to frame structures owing to tunnel excavation. When constructing a tunnel network deep underground, it is necessary to divide the main tunnel and connect the divergence tunnel to the ground surface. Ground settlement is caused by excavation of the adjacent divergence tunnel. Therefore, predicting ground settlement using diverse variables is necessary before performing damage estimation. We used the volume loss and cover-tunnel diameter ratio as the variables in this study. Applying the ground settlement values to the settlement induction device, we measured the extent of damage to frame structures due to displacement at specific points. The vertical and horizontal displacements that occur at these points were measured using preattached LVDT (Linear variable differential transformer), and the lateral strain and angular distortion were calculated using these displacements. The lateral strain and angular distortion are key parameters for structural damage estimation. A damage assessment chart comprises the "Negligible", "Very Slight Damage", "Slight Damage", "Moderate to Severe Damage", and "Severe to Very Severe Damage" categories was developed. This table was applied to steel frame and concrete frame structures for comparison.
Ground settlements induced by tunnel excavation cause the foundations of the neighboring building structures to deform. An expert system called NESASS( Neural network Expert System for Adjacent Structure Safety analysis) was developed to analyze the structural safety of such building structures. NESASS predicts the trend of ground settlements resulting from tunnel excavation and carries out a safety analysis for building structures on the basis of the predicted ground settlements. Using neural network technique. the NESASS learns the database consisting of the measured ground settlements collected from numerous actual fields and infers a settlement trend at the field of interest. The NESASS calculates the magnitudes of angular distortion, deflection ratio, and differential settlement of the structure. and in turn, determines the safety of the structure. In addition, the NESASS predicts the patterns of cracks to be formed in the structure, using Dulacska model for crack evaluation. In this study, the ground settlements measured from Seoul subway construction sites were collected and classified with respect to the major factors influencing ground settlement. Subsequently, a database of ground settlement due to tunnel excavation was built. A parametric study was performed to select the optimal neural network model for the database. A comparison of the ground settlement predicted by the NESASS with the measured ones indicates that the NESASS leads to reasonable predictions. The results of confidence evaluation for safety evaluation system of the NESASS are presented in this paper.
