  • Disease resistance in plants is often controlled by gene-for-gene mechanism in which avirulence (avr) gene products encoding by pathogens are specifically recognized, either directly or indirectly by plant disease resistance (R) gene products. Recent studies arising from molecular cloning of a number of R genes from various plant species that confer resistance to different pathogens and corresponding avr genes from various pathogens resulted in the accumulation of a wealth of knowledge on mode of action of gene-for-gene interaction. Specially, members of the NBS-LRR class of R genes encoding proteins containing a nucleotide binding site (NBS) and carboxyl-terminal leucine-rich repeats (LRRs) confer resistance to very different types of phytopathogens, such as bacteria, fungi, oomycetes, viruses, nematodes and aphids. This article reviewed the molecular events that occur up-stream of defense response pathway, specially, bacterial avr gene protein recognition mediated by NBS-LRR type R gene product in plant based on current research results of well studied model plants.

  • Saikosaponin derivatives such as saikosaponins A, B1, B2, B3, B4, C, and D present in Bupleurum falcatum were analyzed by a high performance liquid chromatograph equipped with an evaporative light scattering detector, using different extraction solvents (water and 70% ethanol). The samples were injected into a YMC Pack Pro C18 column and separated using a gradient elution system with a mobile phase composed of acetonitrile and water at a flow rate of 1.1 mL/min. The content of saikosaponin derivatives was higher in 70% ethanol extract than in water extract. This study provides an efficient analytical method for determining the optimal conditions for extraction of saikosaponin derivatives, which can be used as a basis for development of functional foods and pharmaceutical products from B. falcatum.

  • This study investigated the capsaicin content in 10 kinds of home produced red pepper and 7 kinds of red pepper processed products (3 kinds of red pepper powder, 3 kinds of sauce, and 1 kind of red pepper paste) by analyzing capsaicinoids using LC MS. For the variety of PR Changyang, on the other hand, the plant was divided into 5 parts [pericarp (tip, middle, and base), placenta, and seed] and capsaicinoids content was analyzed for each of the parts. Based on the results, capsaicinoids content was highest in the placenta, and next in the seed, base, middle, and tip. This result shows that the biosynthesis of capsaicinoids takes place in the placenta. Regarding the results from analyzing differences in capsaicinoids content among red pepper varieties, the content was highest in Mu han zil ju and lowest in PR Changyang, and the former had about 38 times higher content than the latter, showong that capsaicinoids content was highly varied among red pepper varieties. When red pepper processed products in the market were surveyed, capsaicinoids content did not differe greatly among sauce products, but was largely different among powder products.

  • As today's business environment has become more and more competitive, forward as well as backward flows of products among members belonging to a supply chain have been increased. The backward flows of products, which are common in most industries, result from increasing amount of products that are returned, recalled, or need to be repaired. Effective management for the backward flows of products has become an important issue for businesses because of opportunities for simultaneously enhancing profitability and customer satisfaction from returned products. Since third party logistics service providers (3PLs) are playing an important role in reverse logistics operations, they should perform two simultaneous logistics operations for a number of different clients who want to improve their logistics operations for both forward and reverse flows. In this case, distribution networks have been independently designed with respect to either forward or backward flows so far. This paper proposes a mixed integer programming model for the design of network integrating both forward and reverse logistics. Since the network design problem belongs to a class of NP-hard problems, we present an efficient heuristic algorithm based on genetic algorithm (GA), of which the performance is compared to the lower bound by Lagrangian relaxation. Finally, the validity of proposed algorithm is tested using numerical examples.

  • We developed a Near Real-Time Validation System (NRVS) for the Level-2 Products of AQUA Satellite. AQUA satellite is the second largest project of Earth Observing System (EOS) mission of NASA. This satellite provides the information of water cycle of the entire earth with many different forms. Among its products, we have used five kinds of level-2 geophysical parameters containing rain rate, sea surface wind speed, skin surface temperature, atmospheric temperature profile, and atmospheric humidity profile. To use these products in a scientific purpose, reasonable quantification is indispensable. In this paper we explain the near real-time validation system process and its detail algorithm. Its simulation results are also analyzed in a quantitative way. As reference data set in-situ measured meteorological data which are periodically gathered and provided by the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) is processed. Not only site-specific analysis but also time-series analysis of the validation results are explained and detail algorithms are described.
