In order to understand food sources-metabolism for the pacific oyster (Crassostrea gigas), the stable isotope ratios of carbon (${\delta}^{13}C$) and nitrogen (${\delta}^{15}N$) of its gut, gill, and muscle as well as potential food sources (particulate organic matter, sedimentary organic matter, benthic microalgae, seagrass detritus) were determined in Dongdae Bay. Average ${\delta}^{13}C$ and ${\delta}^{15}N$ values reflect that oysters primarily fed on sedimentary organic matter as opposed to suspended organic matter during summer and winter seasons. However, the relatively enriched $^{15}N$ values of particulate organic matter (>$250{\mu}m$) and sedimentary organic matter in the summer may be due to the photosynthetic incorporation of $^{15}N$-enriched nitrogen (DIN) or the spawning events of bivalves. Specific oyster tissues (gut, gill, and muscle) revealed different metabolic pathways, which were determined through analysis of ${\delta}^{13}C$ and ${\delta}^{15}N$ in each organ. The present results suggest the determination of carbon and nitrogen stable isotopes to be a useful approach in ecological research related to the food sources- metabolism of Crassostrea gigas.
This study investigated the fatigue lives and mechanical properties of the carbon black filled natural rubber for the vibration-proof parts of the railway vehicle and automobile. The carbon blacks were one of the sources of crack nucleation and crack propagation in the rubber matrix, like the cementite and the maganese sulfide in iron matrix. Different kinds of carbon blacks resulted in different fatigue lives, critical J-values, and fracture morphologies. It was noticed that the critical J-value remained almost the same regardless of the length of a pre-crack. In addition, different kinds of carbon blacks generated different fracture morphologies, and microscopic and macroscopic roughnesses. The critical J-value has linear relations to the roughness, and it seemed related to the size distribution of carbon black particles. By reviewing all the experi-mental data, we found the factors that were related to the fatigue lives, and the logarithmic value of the fatigue life could be linearly expressed by the combination of the critical J-value and the macroscopic roughness. We also proposed a new estimative equation of fatigue life.
The effects of different concentrations of three amino acids as carbon and or nitrogen sources on mycelial dry weights, changes in pH values of synthetic medium, ammonia secretion and extracellular protease activity by three zoosporic fungi, pathogens of fish and shellfish, were studied. As compared with the control, the addition of isoleucine and aspartic acid as nitrogen sources were generally stimulative for mycelial dry weight production whereas phenylalanine was inhibitory irrespective to the tested fungal species. When amino acids served as carbon and nitrogen sources, the mycelial dry weights of the three fungi were increased (mostly non-significantly) relative to untreated control but weights were decreased as the concentrations of the three amino acids raised. The addition of individual amino acids as carbon and nitrogen sources to the medium significantly increased pH values of the medium comparable to the control. The addition of each of the three amino acids as carbon and nitrogen sources to the medium significantly induced ammonia secretion by the three species of zoosporic fungi. Ammonia secretion in synthetic medium amended with amino acids as nitrogen source raised by the three zoosporic fungi relative to untreated control except in case of Achlya racemosa treated with isoleucine. Extracellular protease activity was almost promoted in case of Achlya proliferoides and Saprolegnia furcata cultures treated with isoleucine and aspartic acid individually in presence of glucose and vice versa in case of phenylalanine. However, extracellular protease activity of A. racemosa decreased compared with the control at various concentrations of isoleucine and both phenylalanine and aspartic acid assumed inconsistent effects. Extracellular protease activity of the three zoosporic fungi in the medium devoid of glucose varied depending upon zoosporic fungal species, the tested amino acid and the applied concentrations. The values of protease activity were approximately less two folds than that obtained in presence of glucose.
Microbial surfactants are more effective and environmentally friendly than many synthetic surfactants. Sophorolipid, a glycolipid type microbial surfactant, is produced from C. bombiocola. Cultivation techniques to increase the productivity have been developed using various carbon sources and reactor setup, reaching its concentration upto 100-300 g/L. Due to its high productivity and non-toxicity, sophorolipid became one of the most promising alternative to synthetic surfactants. Fermentative production of sophorolipid depends primarily on the carbon sources, such as glucose and vegetable oils, and nitrogen sources. Chemical modification of the sophorolipid produces various derivative with different physical properties including hydrophile-liphophilie balance(HLB), emulsion formation, surface tension and dispersing ability. Commercial potentials of sophorolipid in the cosmetic, health care and environment clean-up industries have been discussed.
In this paper, several simulated devices were constructed for determining components of organic vapors emitting from decorative materials, daily use chemicals and from common behavior of human beings, such as smoking and cooking. The VOCs were preconcentrated on activated carbon and then desorbed by carbon disulphide. The results were obtained by GC/MS analysis and computer searching. It can be concluded that the categories of the sources and the components of organic vapors in indoor air are very complicated, and different sources of VOCs in indoor air have their own emission characteristics.

Concentrations of fine particulate matter ($PM_{2.5}$) and several of its particle constituents measured outside homes in Houston, Texas, and Los Angeles, California, were characterized using multiple regression analysis with proximity to point and mobile sources and meteorological factors as the independent variables. $PM_{2.5}$ mass and the concentrations of organic carbon (OC), elemental carbon (EC), benzo-[a]-pyrene (BaP), perylene (Per), benzo-[g,h,i]-perylene (BghiP), and coronene (Cor) were examined. Negative associations of wind speed with concentrations demonstrated the effect of dilution by high wind speed. Atmospheric stability increase was associated with concentration increase. Petrochemical source proximity was included in the EC model in Houston. Area source proximity was not selected for any of the $PM_{2.5}$ constituents' regression models. When the median values of the meteorological factors were used and the proximity to sources varied, the air concentrations calculated using the models for the eleven $PM_{2.5}$ constituents outside the homes closest to influential highways were 1.5-15.8 fold higher than those outside homes furthest from the highway emission sources. When the median distance to the sources was used in the models, the concentrations of the $PM_{2.5}$ constituents varied 2 to 82 fold, as the meteorological conditions varied over the observed range. We found different relationships between the two urban areas, illustrating the unique nature of urban sources and suggesting that localized sources need to be evaluated carefully to understand their potential contributions to $PM_{2.5}$ mass and its particle constituents concentrations near residences, which influence baseline indoor air concentrations and personal exposures. The results of this study could assist in the appropriate design of monitoring networks for community-level sampling and help improve the accuracy of exposure models linking emission sources with estimated pollutant concentrations at the residential level.

GlxR is considered as a global transcriptional regulator controlling a large number of genes having broad physiological aspects in Corynebacterium glutamicum. However, the expression profile revealing the transcriptional control of glxR has not yet been studied in detail. DNA affinity chromatography experiments revealed the binding of transcriptional regulators SucR, RamB, GlxR, and a GntR-type protein (hereafter denoted as GntR3) to the upstream region of glxR. The binding of different regulators to the glxR promoter was confirmed by EMSA experiments. The expression of glxR was analyzed in detail under various carbon sources in the wild-type and different mutant strains. The sucR and gntR3 deletion mutants showed decreased glxR promoter activities, when compared with the wild type, irrespective of the carbon sources. The promoter activity of glxR was derepressed in the ramB deletion mutant under all the tested carbon sources. These results indicate that SucR and GntR3 are acting as activators of GlxR, while RamB plays a repressor. As expected, the expression of glxR in the cyaB and glxR deletion mutants was derepressed under different media conditions, indicating that GlxR is autoregulated.

In this study, the fugitive emission characteristics of airborne volatile organic compounds from different source categories were evaluated with respect to the concentrations measured in the vicinity of the sources. A total of 22 different sources were investigated, including gasoline storage and filling stations, painting spray booth, laundry, printing officer, textile industries, and a number of environmental sanitary facilities such as landfill, wastewater treatment and incineration plants. The target VOCs included 83 individual compounds, which were determined by adsorption sampling and thermal desorption coupled with GC/MS analysis. Overall, the aliphatic compounds appeared to be the most abundant class of compounds in terms of their concentrations, followed by aromatic, and halogenated hydrocarbons. As a single compound, however, toluene was the most abundant one, explaining 11% of the total VOC concentrations as an average of all the dataset. Among source categories, petroleum associated sources such as gasoline storage/filling stations, and laundry factory were identified as the most significant sources of aliphatic hydrocarbons, while aromatic VOCs were dominantly emitted from the sources handling organic solvents, such as painting booth, printing offices, and textile dyeing processes. However. there was no apparent pattern in terms of the contributions of eath group to the total VOCs concentrations in environmental sanitary facilities. It was also found that the activated carbon adsorption tower installed for the VOC emission control in some facilities do not show any effective performances, which may result in the increased VOC levels in the ambient atmosphere.
Zoogloea ramigera produces an extracellular polysaccharide called zooglan, which adsorbs heavy metals. In the current study, Zoogloea ramigera was cultured in media containing various carbon sources. When different carbon sources were included in the cultivation medium, there was a change in the composition of zooglan that is mainly composed of glucose, galactose, and pyruvic acid. The various zooglan compositions were analyzed by HPLC, and changes in the heavy metal (lead (II) and cadmium) adsorption characteristics relative to a change in the composition were examined using an atomic absorption spectrophotometer. A high adsorption capacity was observed at a pH higher than 3.0. The adsorption of metal ions was the highest at $35^{\circ}C$, and a higher adsorption was obtained with a lower flow rate. Changes in the zooglan composition did result in changes in the heavy metal adsorption characteristics. Furthermore, it was also found that the pyruvic acid content was more important than the glucose or galactose content for heavy metal adsorption.
When Escherichia coli W, which is able to utilize sucrose as a carbon source, harboring a high-copy-number plasmid (pSYL105) containing the Alcaligenes eultrophus polyhydroxyalkanoate(PHA) biosynthetic genes was cultured in a defined medium, the final poly(3-hydroxybutyric acid), PHB, concentration obtained was as low as $0.21g/\ell$. Ten different complex nitrogen sources were, therefore, examined for their ability to enhance PHB synthesis when supplemented to a defined medium. Addition of tryptone, casamino acids, casein hydrolysate, or soy bean hydrolysate enhanced PHB synthesis most significantly, resulting in more than 10 times higher PHB concentration compared with that obtained in a defined medium. Furthermore, PHB yield on sucrose was also increased by more than a 10 fold by the addition of these complex nitrogen sources, which suggested that PHB might be efficiently produced by the recombinant E. coli W(pSYL105) using sucrose as a carbon source.
