Antioxidant Characteristics of Sweet Potato (Ipomoea batatas (L.) Lam.) according to Different Plant Parts and Drying Methods (건조방법에 따른 고구마 식물체 부위별 항산화특성)

  • This study investigated the antioxidant characteristics of sweet potato according to different plant parts and drying methods. The sweet potato plant parts were divided into root tubers, stems, stalks, leaves, and tips, and the drying methods were freeze-drying and hot air drying. Total polyphenol and flavonoid contents and radical scavenging activity of the sweet potato plant parts were significantly different depending on the plant parts and drying methods. The total polyphenol content of freeze-dried sweet potato leaves and tips were 52.76 and 46.19 mg chlorogenic acid equivalents/g sample, and the total flavonoid contents were 222.47 and 214.12 mg quercetin equivalents/g sample, respectively, and decreased with hot air drying. DPPH radical scavenging activity was higher in freeze-drying than hot air drying and was significantly different depending on the plant parts. The ABTS radical scavenging activity of freeze-dried sweet potato leaves and tips were 43.48 and 44.68 mg Trolox equivalents/g sample, respectively, and decreased with hot air drying. Therefore, additional studies on the functionality of using by-products from sweet potato cultivation are needed.

  • This research proposes the method to develop the recommendation system of automobile parts using task ontology technology. The proposed intelligent recommendation system is designed to learn the assembly process of automobile parts and the automobile parts are composed by ontology method for the recommendation of the parts. Using hierarchical taxonomy based on is-a relationship, the relationship between each part that makes up automotive engine was set. Each part has each different weighted value according to the knowledge of automobile experts. The weighted value is created by the number of selection that the users of the automobile recommendation system select while using the system and the final value calculated by the multiplication of the weighted value, which is recorded within the system. As a result, the users can easily identify which factor in which part is important by the output in the order of the priority. The intelligent recommendation system for automobile parts is a system to inform of the assembly, the usage and the importance of automobile parts without any specialized knowledge by expressing the parts that are closely related with the applicable parts when selecting any part on the basis of the generated data for the automobile parts that are difficult to access by users.

Effect of Ultrasonic Treatment on Physicochemical Properties and Palatability of Cooked Chicken Meat (초음파 처리가 가열 계육의 이화학적 성질 및 기호성에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was carried out to investigate the effect of ultrasonic treatment on physicochemical and sensory properties of cooked chicken meat. Moisture content of ultrasonic treated breast meat was higher than that of control, fat content of control of breast and leg meat were higher than that of ultrasonic treatment, and protein of control of breast meat was higher than that of ultrasonic treatment. Hunters L(lightness)-and a(redness)-value were not different between cooking methods, L-value of breast meat and a-value of leg meat were higher without regard to cooking method. Hunterb (yellowness)-value was not different among cooking chicken meats. Cooking yield was not different between cooking methods, pH of ultrasonic treated chicken meats were higher than that of control. Water holding capacity and salt soluble protein extractability of ultrasonic treated breast meat were greater than that of control. Water soluble protein extractability of ultrasonic treated leg meat was higher than that of control, and shear force value was not different between cooking methods. Hardness, cohesiveness and gumminess were not different between cooking methods and parts of muscle. Springiness of ultrasonic treated leg meat was greater than that of control and chewiness of breast meat was higher than that of leg meat. Aroma, texture, juiciness and overall acceptability were not different between cooking methods, taste of ultrasonic treated leg meat was higher than that of control. In addition, the sensory scores of parts of muscle were affected greater than that of cooking methods.

TIDAL TAILS OF GLOBULAR CLUSTERS

  • We present N-body simulations of globular clusters including gravitational field of the Galaxy, in order to study effects of tidal field systematically on the shape of outer parts of globular clusters using NBODY6. The Galaxy is assumed to be composed of central bulge and outer halo. We mvestigate the cluster of multi-mass models with a power-law initial mass function (IMF) starting with different initial masses, initial number of particles, different slopes of the IMF and different orbits of the cluster. We have examined the general evolution of the clusters, the shape of outer parts of the clusters, density profiles and the direction of tidal tails. The density profiles appear to become somewhat shallower just outside the tidal boundary consistent with some observed data. The position angle of the tidal tall depends on the location in the Galaxy as well as the direction of the motion of. clusters. We found that the clusters become more elongated at the apogalacticon than at the pengalacticon. The tidal tails may be used to trace the orbital paths of globular clusters.

Parametric study on equivalent damping ratio of different composite structural building systems

  • Structures consisting of concrete and steel parts, which are irregular in damping ratios are investigated. This investigation is a code-based seismic design of such structures. Several practical difficulties encountered, due to inherent differences in the nature of dynamic response of each part, and the different damping ratios of the two parts. These structures are irregular in damping ratios and have complex modes of vibration so that their analysis cannot be handled with the readily available commercial software. Therefore, this work aims to provide simple yet sufficiently accurate constant values of equivalent damping ratios applied to the whole structure for handling the damping irregularity of such structures. The results show that the equivalent damping ratio changes with the height of the building and the kind of the structural system, but it is constant for all accelerations values. Thus, available software SAP2000 applied for seismic analysis, design and the provisions of existing seismic codes. Finally, evaluation of different kinds of structural system used in this research to find the most energy dissipating one found by finding the best value of quality coefficient.

Antimicrobial Effect, Antioxidant and Tyrosinase Inhibitory Activity of the Extract from Different Parts of Phytolacca americana L.

  • This study was conducted to clarify the antimicrobial effect, antioxidant and tyrosinase inhibitory activities of the biological composition having the Phytolacca americana, and to enhance the natural materials utilization of foods and cosmetics. The antimicrobial activities of the different parts of P. americana were evaluated using the agar diffusion test. The antimicrobial activity of P. americana was relatively high in Malassezia furfur known as a skin fungi and Vibrio parahaemolyticus compared to Escherichia coli and Staphy-lococcus epidermidis. However, the antimicrobial activity in Vibrio parahaemolyticus did not show at all parts of P. americana. Both the DPPH radical scavenging activity and ABTS radical scavenging activity have been increased with the higher concentration of methanol extract. In particular, leaf extract of P. americana exhibited the highest activity both ABTS radical scavenging activity and DPPH radical scavenging activity. The nitrite scavenging activity was decreased when the pH was changed from pH 1.2 to pH 6.0. The highest nitrite scavenging activity was exhibited from the methanol extract of fruit, followed by root, stem, and leaf at pH 1.2. However, the nitrite scavenging activity at pH of 6.0 was not almost detected. All plant parts of P. americana showed tyrosinase inhibitory activity. The highest activity was found in the stem, and followed by root, leaf, and fruit in order. These tyrosinase inhibitory activity was progressively increased in a concentration-dependent manner. In this experiment on the methanol extracts of different organ from P. americana, we confirmed that the extract of P. americana showed potent tyrosinase inhibitory activity. Taken together, we conjectured that the P. americana had the potent biological activities, therefore this plant having various functional components could be a good material for development into source of natural food additives and cosmetics.

Analysis of Tactile Effects on the Different Body Parts by the Various Vibration Patterns (다양한 진동 패턴에 따른 신체 부위의 촉감 효과 분석)

  • This paper presents the analysis of tactile effects on different body parts according to the various vibration patterns. The experiments use a vibration pad made of 16 vibration elements in the form of $4{\times}4$ array. The vibration elements are controlled by a 8-bit microprocessor. The sound of gunshot initiates a vibration pattern on different body parts and its sensitivity is measured. The analysis of the experiments lead us to conclude that the vibration pad is the most realistic interface for shooting games and the shoulder part is the most sensitive part in the body. In addition, the most effective vibration pattern is the for the pattern which gives the sensation of spreading out from the center to the outside. This study analyzes the relationship between the human body parts and the tactile sensations by the various vibration patterns. The result of this study will be a good reference for user studies in the field of haptics based on the vibration.

Growth and Ginsenoside Content in Different Parts of Ginseng Sprouts Depending on Harvest Time (수확시기에 따른 새싹삼의 부위별 생육 및 Ginsenoside 함량 변화)

  • Background: Since the revised Ginseng Industrial Act was passed, ginseng sprouts have become a new medicinal vegetable for which there is high consumer demand. However, the existing amount of research and data on ginseng production has not kept pace with this changed reality. Methods and Results: In this study we analyzed the changes in the amounts of ginsenosides in different parts of growing ginseng sprouts during the period from when organic seedlings were planted in nursery soil until 8 weeks of cultivation had elapsed, which was when the leaves hardened. In the leaves, ginsenoside content increased 1.62 times with the panaxadiol (PD) system and 1.31 - 1.56 times with the panaxatriol (PT) system from 7 to 56 days after transplantation. During the same period, the total ginsenoside content of the stems decreased by 0.66 - 0.91 times, and those of the roots increased until the $21^{st}$ day, and then underwent steep declines. The effect of fermented press cake extract (FPCE) and tap water (TP) on the total amount of ginsenoside per plant were similar, and could be represented with the equations $y=1.4330+0.2262x-0.0008x^2$ and $y=0.9555+0.2997x-0.0031x^2$ in which y = ginsenoside content x = amount of and on the total amounts of FPCE or TP, respectively after 26.4 days, however, the difference between ginsenoside content with FPCE and TP widened. Conclusions: These results suggested that the amounts of ginsenosides in different parts of ginseng varied with the cultivation period and nutrient supply. These findings also provide fundamental data on the distribution of ginsenosides among plant parts for 2-year-old ginseng plants in the early-growth stage.

Chemical composition of different parts of ramie (Boehmeria nivea)

  • Ramie (Boehmeria nivea) is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the family Urticaceae. It was used in folk remedies for diuretic or anti-pyretic purposes and as an hepatoprotective, anti-oxidant, and anti-inflammation agent. In this study, we investigated the composition of free sugars, amino acids, fatty acids, organic acids, and total polyphenol contents in parts of ramie (root, stem, and leaf) and different harvest areas (10 areas). Overall, free sugars were found as sucrose, glucose, fructose, and galactose at concentrations ranging from 24.5 to 1173.8 mg/g. Amino acids lysine, threonine, tyrosine, phenylalanine, and histidine were detected at concentrations of 33.8 to 3735.3 mg/g. Major fatty acids were linoleic acid, palmitic acid, and linolenic acid at concentrations of 7.3 to 364.4 mg/g. In organic acids, the concentration of malic acid was highest of all with 672.2 mg/g. The content of free sugars, amino acids, fatty acids, organic acids, and total polyphenol was higher in leaves than in roots and stems. In contrast, the total polyphenol content was higher in roots with 33.7 - 219.4 mg/g than in leaves or in stems. As seen in collecting region, the contents of free sugars, amino acids, fatty acids, organic acids, and total polyphenol of Bn-33, 39, 55, 65, and 90 were higher than other samples. Chemical compositions of different parts of ramie are important factors to consider in manufacturing functional foods. The results of this study provide fundamental information on the chemical compositions of ramie parts and would help develop new functional foods from ramie leaves or the whole plant.

Antioxidant and Antimicrobial Activities of The Extracts from Native Camellia japonica in Korea (국내 자생 동백나무(Camellia japonica L.) 추출물의 항산화 및 항미생물 활성)

  • This research has been undertaken to increase availiability of native Camellia japonica leaf and flower in Korea as a edible-medicinal resource. Chemical compositions, antioxidant and antimicrobial activities in different parts of camellia were investigated. Crude protein contained the highest in young leaves(14.22%) but less than 10% in different parts. The contents of crude fat and crude ash were 60.48% in seeds and 5.16% in mature leaves, respectively. Methanol extract of young leaf, flower, and flower bud in camellia showed strong antioxidant activity compared with different parts. Also, antioxidant activity of these was higher than that of BHT, but weaker than that of VtC. Antioxidant activity of various parts in camellia were in order of young leaf > flower bud > flower > mature leaf > stem > bark. Extracts of mature leaf and bark had a remarkable antibacterial activity(0 CFU/$m\ell$) on Bacillus subtilis. The young leaf extract displayed effective growth inhibition against B. subtilis, Candida albicans, and Trichosporon beigelii.
