  • This study has been made to investigate the stress distribution around defects and inclusions that behave as stress concentrators. The stress distribution and interation effects around defects and inclusions was analyzed using Finite Element Method. The results are as follows;(1) Maximum stress point in case of $E_I/E_M>1$($E_I$:elasticity modulus forthe inclusion, $E_M$/:elasticity modulus for the base material)is the vertical point with respect to force direction and in case of $E_I/E_M<1$ it is the parallel point along the hole edge. (2) Interaction effects of ${\sigma}_y$ for the inclusion side is larger than the defect side when the interval between inclusion and defect is near. (3) stress interation effects is large if the difference of ${\sigma}_y$ is small and it is small if the difference of ${\sigma}_y$ is large for the case that the interval between inclusion and defect whose size and property are different is near.

  • The mechanical properties and microstructures of aluminum-matrix composites fabricated by the dispersion of fine alumina particles less than $20{\mu}m$ in size into 6061 aluminum alloys are investigated in this study. In the as-quenched state, the yield stress of the composite is 40~85 MPa higher than that of the 6061 alloy. This difference is attributed to the high density of dislocations within the matrix introduced due to the difference in the thermal expansion coefficients between the matrix and the reinforcement. The difference in the yield stress between the composite and the 6061 alloy decreases with the aging time and the age-hardening curves of both materials show a similar trend. At room temperature, the strain-hardening rate of the composite is higher than that of the 6061 alloy, most likely because the distribution of reinforcements enhances the dislocation density during deformation. Both the yield stress and the strain-hardening rate of the T6-treated composite decrease as the testing temperature increases, and the rate of decrease is faster in the composite than in the 6061 alloy. Under creep conditions, the stress exponents of the T6-treated composite vary from 8.3 at 473 K to 4.8 at 623 K. These exponents are larger than those of the 6061 matrix alloy.

  • The influence of round embossed surface on slider bearing characteristics and its load carrying capacity is discussed for thin film effect of embossed slider bearing. For the numerical computation of lubrication parameters such as pressure, load capacity and shear stress that are normalized and a Reynolds equation is used for the analysis of embossed slider bearing characteristics. For this purpose, the finite difference method of central difference scheme is used in this study. In a slider bearing with embossed form, several simulation parameters such as pressure, load capacity and shear stress of the bearing can be obtained according to independent parameters such as the slope of the slider bearing and number of embossing in the upper slider. Also this results can be summarized and be stored in sequential data file for latter analysis. After all, their distribution of the pressure and shear stress parameters can be displayed and be analyzed easily by using the developed program with matlab GUI technique. The independent parameters such as a number of embossing and a slope of the embossed surface slider are used for discussing simulation parameters of pressure distribution, shear stress and load carrying capacity of the round embossing. These study results reported in this paper should be applied to the other shaped slider bearing with a rectangular embossed surface or rectangular waved surface.

  • The population over 65 years of age in Korea will be 10.3% of the entire population in 2008 indicating that Korea is already in an aging society. In addition, it is expected that Korea will be in an aged society in 2018 (population over 65 years of age : 14.3%) and that it will be in a post-aged society in 2026 (20.8%). Consequently, aged workers may also increase. It is well-known that the possibility to work longer and to live better is highly related to the work ability of individual. The objective of this study was to evaluate the work ability of each age group using the Work Ability Index(WAI) in the shipbuilding industry, and to assess the effects of social psychological stress, drinking characteristics, smoking characteristics, etc. on the WAI score. The results showed no significant difference on the effects of aging, drinking, and smoking characteristics. Interestingly, a statistical analysis on the effects of social psychological stress revealed a significant difference by stress levels. The difference of the average WAI score between the healthy group and the high risk group was about 10 points. Based on this result, it can be concluded that the stress level is an influential factor on WAI.

  • Bridge behavior under passing traffic loads has been studied for the past 50 years. This paper presents how to model congestion on bridges and how the maximum dynamic stress of bridges change during the passing of moving vehicles. Most current research is based on mid-span dynamic effects due to traffic load and most bridge codes define a factor called the dynamic load allowance (DLA), which is applied to the maximum static moment under static loading. This paper presents an algorithm to solve the governing equation of the bridge as well as the equations of motions of two real European trucks with different speeds, simultaneously. It will be shown, considering congestion in eight case studies, the maximum dynamic stress and how far from the mid-span it occurs during the passing of one or two trucks with different speeds. The congestion effect on the maximum dynamic stress of bridges can make a significant difference in the magnitude. By finite difference method, it will be shown that where vehicle speeds are considerably higher, for example in the case of railway bridges which have more than one railway line or in the case of multiple lane highway bridges where congestion is probable, current designing codes may predict dynamic stresses lower than actual stresses; therefore, the consequences of a full length analysis must be used to design safe bridges.

  • Gridded products of surface wind/wind-stress over the world ocean have been constructed by using satellite scatterometer as the Japanese Ocean Flux data sets with Use of Remote-sensing Observation (J-OFURO) data. Our previous validation study in the tropical Pacific using TAO/Triton and NDBC buoys revealed high reliability of our products. In this study, the Kuroshio Extension Observatory (KEO) buoy data are used for validation of other gridded wind-stress products including the NCEP-1 and 2 in the western North Pacific region where there have been few in-situ data. Results reveal that our J-OFURO product has almost zero mean difference and smallest root-mean-square (RMS) difference, while the NCEP-1 and 2 ones significantly positive biases and relatively high RMS difference. Intercomparison between the J-OFURO and NCEP products in a wide region of the North Pacific covered by the westerly winds exhibits that the NCEPs have larger magnitudes in the wind stress than the J-OFURO's, suggesting overestimation of the NCEPs.
