Objectives: This study was to examined the level of psychosocial factors, dietary habits and DMFT index and to examined the relationship among variables in 12-year-old adolescents. Methods: Participants were 1,831 total students from 14 middle school who lived Seosan with mean age of 12.46 years. Data was collected using a self administrated questionnaire from April 13 to May 24, 2009. Psychosocial factors and dietary habits were measured using the 5-items and 10-items. A trained investigator made an oral examination of them in natural light using a mirror and explorer to determine their DMFT index. Data were analyzed with t-test, one-way ANOVA, and Tukey test, pearson correlation coefficient using the SPSS WIN 15.0 program. Results: Regarding dietary self-efficacy, perceived benefit and perceived barrier degree, the subjects achieved a mean of $3.89{\pm}0.69$, $3.48{\pm}0.63$ and $3.82{\pm}0.63$ out of a maximum 5 points. And the dietary habit degree of subjects achieved a mean of $10.69{\pm}4.02$ out of a maximum 20 points and the DMFT index were $1.91{\pm}2.26$. Dietary habits was positively correlated with psychosocial factors and negatively correlated with DMFT index. And then perceived barrier score were negatively correlated with DMFT index. Conclusion: Based on the findings, dental caries experience is associated with perceived barrier and dietary habits. These results suggest that the implementation of health promotion should be considered for various psychosocial factors and dietary habits in adolescents.
Purpose: This study was aimed to identify the factors that related the dietary behavior in coronary artery disease patients and to made the data for nursing which is thought to improve the dietary behavior. Method: The study population was the coronary artery disease patients who were treated at outpatient base. The study method was the dietary behavior, diet self-efficacy, perceived-healthy behavior, social support measurement & characteristics. All of the above tool was validated for its composition propriety and confidence. The statistical analysis was done by SPSS PC 11.0 program. and frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, Pearson's correlation was used for analysis. Results: The score of dietary behavior in the coronary artery disease patients was 4.57 point. The score of perceived-benefits was the highest among the association factor(point) and the score of perceived-barriers(m=2.78), diet self-efficacy(m=5.12), social support(m=4.86 point), exercise and chest pain. Conclusion: The development of the program for the efficient dietary education that prevents the progression of the coronary artery disease is needed.
Under the assumption that people go through stages in making dietary behavior change, this study was attempted to apply the stages of a change model for fat intake by examining the associations of social psychological variables with stages of change in dietary fat reduction. Derived from social psychological theories, 10 social psychological variables on motivational beliefs(6), social influence(3) and self-efficacy(1) related specifically to selecting every day diets low in fat were constructed. Fat and energy intakes were assessed by a short form semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire. The associations of stages of change with motivational beliefs, social influence, and self-efficacy variables and energy and fat intakes were assessed in 333 female adults from large cities in Korea. Dietary stage groups differed significantly on most of the social psychological variables in ways predicted by theory. Motivational factors that lead to a psychological state of readiness to take action were important in the early stages of the dietary change process. Social influences were more important in the stages as people decide to take action. Self efficacy and motivational beliefs, particularly, reduction of perceived barriers were important in maintaining fat reduction behavior. The results of our study indicate differences in stages of change in fat reduction behavior in terms of nutrient intakes and social psychological correlates and suggests that adding a time dimension to social psychological models increases our understanding of dietary change, which assist us in designing nutrition education interventions that are more appropriately targeted by stage of change. The purpose of this study was to find a relationship between eating behavior, dietary self-efficacy and nutrition knowledge by comparing these items in elementary school students according to food service type. The survey was made through a questionnaire from 759 students in the 6th grade of elementary school in 39 Gangwon Province. The average score of eating behaviors according to food service type was highest for urban type, followed by agri-fishery type, and finally remote island and country type, for the questions asking about the application of nutrition knowledge and the frequency of eating out. The average score of nutrition knowledge according to food service type showed significant differences for the questions about eating snacks before going to sleep and weight increase as well as calorie comparisons between foods. For the correlation of eating behavior, dietary self-efficacy and nutrition knowledge, the agri-fishery type showed positive in all of the three items with significant differences. In the remote island and country type, there was a positive relationship between nutrition knowledge and dietary self-efficacy, and between eating behavior and dietary self-efficacy. However, there was no significant difference of correlation between nutrition knowledge and eating behavior. In order to confirm the predictable variables for eating behavior, a regression analysis was made by injecting variables in every stage with independent variables of dietary self-efficacy and nutrition knowledge, which showed a significant relationship with eating behavior. The results showed that, in the urban type, dietary self-efficacy and nutrition knowledge affected the eating behavior and, in the agriculture type and the remote island and country type, only dietary self-efficacy affected the eating behavior.

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of nutrition education using materials based on social cognitive theory. Education topics focused on improving health-related and dietary self-awareness and behavior capability in adolescents. Methods: Participants were recruited from a middle school for girls; 67 students (educated group, n=34 and control group, n=33) participated. The education group received 12 lessons in club activity class. Self-administered surveys were conducted for each group before and after the nutrition education program. The questionnaires consisted of variables such as self-efficacy, outcome expectation, outcome expectancy, knowledge, and dietary practices based on the social cognitive theory. Education satisfaction was evaluated using a five-point Likert scale for two sections: a) teaching and learning and b) education results. The data were analyzed using a t-test and Chi Square-test (significance level: p < 0.05). Results: In the education group, post-education, there were significant differences in self-efficacy (p < 0.05), knowledge (p < 0.01), and dietary practices (p < 0.05), whereas outcome expectation and expectancy did not show any significant differences. None of the variables showed any significant differences in the control group. Educational satisfaction scores were $4.38{\pm}0.12$ (teaching and learning) and $4.14{\pm}0.15$ (education results). Conclusions: This study showed that improving adolescent's awareness and behavior capability has a positive effect on their dietary practices. Moreover, this study suggested that a theory-based determinant should be considered to improve dietary behavior among adolescents.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of a winter training camp on physical fitness, physical self-efficacy and nutrients intake in juvenile Taekwondo players. Sixty three subjects of male middle school student Taekwondo players participated in this study. Before and after attending Taekwondo winter training camp, Taekwondo related fitness and physical self efficacy and nutrients intake of subjects were measured and compared. The results of this study were as follows: 1) There were significantly improvements (p<0.001) in 1200m run, sit up, push up. 2) There was no significantly change in physical self efficacy. 3) There were significantly increase intakes (p<0.001) in total calorie, protein, fat, fiber, Ca, P, K, vitamin A, vitamin B2, vitamin B6, niacin, vitamin C and vitamin E. However, index of nutritional quality in fiber, Ca, K, vitamin A had not good assessment. These results suggested that a winter training seems necessary to keep psychological management and scientific dietary management as well as physical training in juvenile Taekwondo players.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to develop a heart health diary to promote self-care ability among patients with heart failure (HF), and to identify the diary's effect on self-care adherence, self-efficacy, and physical activity. Methods: A randomized control-group pretest-posttest design was adopted using block randomization. A calender-typed health diary was developed and it included a self-care checklist and education information on HF management. The experimental group were given guided counseling and education for 8 weeks and wrote a daily health diary during that period. Data were collected from the outpatient department of a tertiary medical center from February to April 2016. To verify the hypotheses, data for the experimental group (n=28) and control group (n=33) were analysed using the independent t-test with SPSS/WIN 21.0. Results: At the end of 8 weeks the experimental group had significantly higher scores for self-care adherence (t=-2.48, p =.016) and exercise related self-efficacy (t=-3.44, p =.001) compared to the control group. Conclusion: The findings show that the application of a patient-directed heart health diary is an effective nursing intervention for improving HF patients' self-care adherence and exercise self-efficacy. Strategies to promote dietary self-efficacy are necessary along with further studies including repeated research with an increasing intervention period. Healthcare providers need to encourage the utilization of a health diary for HF patients as a tool for evaluation and for implementation that leads to self-care.
Weight reduction behavior is common among adolescent girls. The present study examined the status of weight reduction behavior and factors affecting the behavioral intention of weight reduction using the Health Belief Model (HBM) for female middle school students by weight category. Survey data was collected from three girl's middle schools in Gyeongju, Korea. A total of 299 female middle school students participated in this study. The questionnaire had questions about general characteristics, weight reduction behavior, and variables of HBM (perceived threat, perceived benefits, perceived barriers, cues to action, self-efficacy in dietary life and exercise, and behavioral intention of weight reduction). Descriptive statistics, Chi-square tests, ANOVA, and multiple regression analysis were applied to analyze the variables. A higher percentage of students in the overweight group attempted weight reduction than those in the underweight and the normal weight groups (P < 0.001). Among students who had attempted weight reduction, 73% tried diet therapy, while 78% tried exercise. Students in the normal and overweight groups showed significantly higher threat (P < 0.01) and cues to action (P < 0.001) than those in the underweight group. As for perceived benefits, barriers, and self-efficacy in dietary life and exercise, there were no significant differences among weight groups. Students in the overweight group showed the strongest intention of weight reduction and there were significant differences among the three weight groups (P < 0.001). Perceive threat (P < 0.01), cues to action (P < 0.001), and perceived self-efficacy (P < 0.01) were significantly associated to behavioral intention of weight reduction for all respondents. For the underweight group, perceived threat (P < 0.05) and perceived self-efficacy (P < 0.01) were the significant variables. For the overweight group, cue to action was the significant variable (P < 0.05).
In this study, we investigated protection motivation and behavioral intention to prevent serious illnesses related to excessive sodium intake among the university students in Gyeongnam and Busan. Within the protection motivation theory (PMT) framework, a survey questionnaire was developed to measure participants' perceptions on the severity of and the vulnerability to the threat of serious diseases due to the high sodium intake as well as the effectiveness of preventive measures (response efficacy), and the ability to perform them (self-efficacy) along with their willingness to follow recommendations (behavioral intention). Data was collected in June 2015. Study participants were divided into either low (n=117) or high (n=177) sodium intake behavior groups based on their current behaviors. Exploratory factor analysis was performed to measure construct validity and Cronbach's alpha was calculated to check reliability of measurement items. The high sodium intake behavior group perceived higher vulnerability than the low sodium intake behavior group among four PMT factors. Differences of the other three factors were not significant between the two groups. The results of hierarchical regression analysis indicated that self-efficacy and response efficacy affected behavioral intention of high sodium intake behavior among students. Hence, development of strategies to increase self-efficacy and response efficacy are strongly recommended.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of the online coaching program on improving eating habit behaviors. The online coaching program was based on the model of habit behaviors change process(Tak et al., 2019) and the success factors on improving eating habit behaviors(Choi et al., 2020), and previous research showing the effects of habit change. Participants were 20 adults, selected through telephone interviews over the age of 19 in the metropolitan area. They were divided into the experiment and control groups, and participated one-on-one coaching program. Data of 17 people were used for the final analysis, and weight, dietary habits, eating behaviors, dietary self-efficacy, self-regulation, and life satisfaction were measured at two times(pre and post). Results showed that there were significant interaction effects between time interval and groups for all the dependent variables except self-regulation and life satisfaction. In other words, there were significant changes in weight, dietary habits, eating behaviors, dietary self-efficacy in the experimental group between time interval, whereas there were no significant changes for the control group. Based on these results, the significance and practical implications, limitations of this research, and suggestions for further research were discussed.
