The prevalence of atopic dermatitis (AD) has increased recently all over the world. Several studies worldwide reported growth retardation associated with AD, but few studies were reported in Korea. Therefore, the objective of this study was to identity the differences in growth and nutrient intakes between Korean children with and without AD. The participants were 71 AD children and age, gender-matched 81 control children aged 10 to 36 months. Demographic information was gathered by questionnaires. Height and weight were measured at clinic and health centers. Height and weight for age, and weight for height were converted as deviation in Z scores using World Health Organization Standard. A 24 hour dietary recall method was performed to estimate nutrient intakes. A higher percentage of AD children had insufficient energy and intakes of calcium, phosphorus, iron, zinc and vitamin B2, defined as intakes lower than 75% of the Dietary Reference Intakes for Korean, compared to the control group (P < 0.001, P < 0.001, P = 0.003, P = 0.001, P = 0.014, P = 0.001, respectively). The percentages of children with height and weight for age Z score below than-1 (stunted) were significantly higher in the AD group (P < 0.001 and P < 0.001, respectively). Multiple food restriction, defined as ${\geq}$ 3 food elimination, was associated with insufficient energy and intakes of calcium, phosphorus, iron, zinc, vitamins A and B2. In conclusion, children with AD need regular nutrient assessment and education about alternative food choices to avoid r food elimination in order to prevent growth retardation or inadequate nutrient intakes. Further longitudinal studies for growth and nutrient intakes should be performed to understand the patterns of growth in children with AD.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: The aims of the present study are: 1) to quantify sodium consumption of patients with unstable or uncontrolled hypertension, 2) to investigate if reduced sodium intake can lower BP in these patients, and 3), to assess the acceptability and feasibility of this approach. SUBJECTS/METHODS: This study included 25 adults (age: 50+ years) with frequently elevated BP or patients with uncontrolled, uncomplicated hypertension despite drug treatment in a general practice setting. BP and salt intake (24h urinary excretion and food records) were measured at baseline and after a sodium reduced diet. RESULTS: Mean (${\pm}SD$) systolic (SBP) over diastolic (DBP) blood pressure (mmHg) at baseline was $150.7({\pm}9.5)$/$84.149({\pm}5.6)$. Mean urinary sodium excretion was 146 mmol/24h. A reduction of 28 mmol sodium excretion decreased SBP/DBP to $135.5({\pm}13.0)$/$82.5({\pm}12.8)$ (P < 0.001). After one month of no dietary advice, only in 48%, SBP was still ${\leq}140mmHg$. CONCLUSION: Assessment of sodium intake using food records, 24h urine collections and probing questions to identify use of sodium containing supplements or drugs are essential for tailored advice targeted at sodium intake reduction. The results of the present study indicate that reduced sodium intake can lower BP after 4 weeks in unstable or uncontrolled hypertensive patients.
This study summarized longevity factors of enterprises and presented longevity mechanism. By analogy of human aging and corporate longevity, the company's decline and longevity phenomenon were analyzed to derive corporate longevity mechanism, presented domestic and foreign longevity enterprises' cases study using above mechanism. The longevity mechanism first, as the human body restricts free radicals by dietary restrictions, companies also need continuous input efficiency. Second, as cognitive reserve by high thinking activities helps heath lifespan, companies can strengthen their profitability by continuous R&D. Third, as humans improve antioxidant functions by exercise, companies should develop risk management capabilities for environmental changes. This study can contribute to sustainable strategies for corporate managers, ultimately plan to suggest model of evaluation or diagnosis of corporate longevity.
In this study, we compared demographic anthropometric characteristic, health-related lifestyle and diet behavior among weight control behaviors of 1187 (555 male, 632 female) aged $40{\sim}69yrs$ in Ganghwa country. All the data were analyzed by chi-square test, trend test, student t-test using SPSS 12.0 version at p < 0.05. 'Attempting weight control (loss)' was more in women than that was found in men (36.6% vs 20.7%), and women attempting weight loss most were 40-50 yrs. The reasons of weight loss were 'health problem' and 'health promotion'. Physical activity and diet restriction were commonly employed as weight control methods. Both genders attempting weight loss had a higher education level, BMI, percentage of body fat, waist circumference and physical activity than those not attempting weight control (p < 0.05). In dietary habits like 'meal regularity', 'slow eating' and 'over eating', women attempting weight loss were superior than those who not attempting weight control group (p < 0.05). Eating pattern changes like 'decrease of fats and fatty foods intake', 'vegetable oil usage', 'increase of fruit and vegetables intake', 'decrease of sugar and salt intake' showed significant differences (p < 0.001) between the attempted weight control groups and nonattempted weight control groups. Salt taste was a preference in male non-attempted weight control group, while sour, hot and spicy taste were preference in female attempted weight control group (p < 0.05). Preference for processed foods, fried foods and snack were significant differences (p < 0.05) in women attempted weight control group. Those attempting weight loss tried to improve their eating patterns. However, those attempting weight loss were poorer than the others in health-related lifestyle and eating habit. Therefore, it is necessary to make an effort that improve healthrelated lifestyle and diet behavior in middle aged group.
This study examines the sociodemographic and anthropometric data, health-related and dietary habits, and nutrient intakes according to depression levels in men and women aged over 65 years. A total of 2,938 subjects were analyzed from the 2016~2018 Korean National Health and Examination Survey. Statistical analyses for complex samples were applied using the SPSS software package. Based on the health questionnaire-9, the subjects were applied into two groups. The percentage of depression in women was significantly higher than in men (P<0.001). The factors associated with men's depression were marital status (P<0.05), household income (P<0.001), occupation (P<0.01), and body mass index (P<0.01). Women's depression was found to be significantly associated with household income (P<0.001), education level (P<0.01), basic living allowance (P<0.001), and body weight status (P<0.01). Perceived health status, stress level, quality of life, not feeling very well for the last two weeks, and activity restriction (P<0.001, respectively) were significant health-related habits associated with depression in both sexes. Diabetes (P<0.05) amongst men and hypertriglyceridemia (P<0.01) in women were significant factors associated with depression. Frequency of meals and eating meals together were significant dietary habits associated with depression by sex. Significant associations between improper nutrient intake and depression were also derived for both sexes; 7 nutrients were identified in men and 10 in women. Our results indicate that different factors are associated with depression in the elderly based on sex. Hence, sex-based health promotion programs are required to prevent the onset of depression among the elderly.
The first option in manure management is developing an environmentally sound nutritional management. This includes proper feeding programs and feeds which will result in less excreted nutrients that need to be managed. Critical components that should be controlled are N, P and minerals that are used at supranutritional levels. Amino acid supplementation and protein restriction reduce N excretion in the monogastric animals. Supplementation with enzymes, such as carbohydrases, phytase and proteases, can be used to reduce excretion of nutrients and feces by improving digestibility of specific nutrients. Growth promoting agents, such as antibiotics, beta-agonists and somatotropin, increase the ability of animals to utilize nutrients, especially dietary protein, which results in reduced excretion of N. Some microminerals, such as Cu and Zn, are supplemented at supranutritional level. Metal-amino acid chelates, metal-proteinates and metal-polysaccharide complexes can be used at a much lower level than inorganic forms of metals without compromising performance of animals. Deodorases can be used to avoid air pollution from animal manure. Nutritional management increases costs to implement. It is necessary to assess the economics in order to find an acceptable compromise between the increased costs and the benefits to the environment and production as well.
Purpose: This descriptive study aimed to compare the perception of the acceptable foods for the neutropenic diet between nurses and patients by food type. Methods: The participants were 225 nurses working at chemotherapy wards and 71 patients in chemotherapy treatment. Data were collected with a self-administered questionnaire from January 2 to February 24, 2012, and analyzed with SPSS 12.0 program using descriptive statistics and the ${\chi}^2$-test. Results: Eighty-eight point eight percent of nurses and 76.1% of cancer patients thought the patients needed the neutropenic diets. The most important decisional criteria to determine dietary restriction was neutrophil count for nurses and food type for patients. The two groups showed significantly different allowance to raw fruits and raw vegetables, sterilized canned juice, fried vegetables, yogurt, uncooked tofu, salted fish, cooked fish, cooked shellfish, uncooked grain powder, jellified food, home-made bread/cookies, nuts including peanuts, instant coffee or tea and tea brewed. In general, patients were more permissive about the neutropenic diet than nurses. Conclusion: It is recommended to consider patients' preference as well as nurses' professional knowledge and publish standardized clinical diet guidelines for neutropenic patients with collaboration between nurses and patient representatives.
This study was aimed to investigate the relations between self-selected intake of 3 macronutrie-nts and body weight gain and body fat accumulation in male rats given three isocaloric diets differing carbohydrate protein and fat contents concurrently. Also the effect of dietary restriction was observed. Forty two male rats of Sprague-Dawley strain weighing 68.7$\pm$6.1g were randomly divided into 2 groups and were allowed to have foods from 3 different cups for 8-hours a day or ad libitum, After 12 weeksthey were decapitated and their brains were quickly removed and frozen until they were assayed for serotonin and its metabolite 5-HIAA The carcass was dried at 105$\pm$2$^{\circ}C$ and measured the contents of body water and body fat. The animals chose a moderately high and constant carbohydrate level and showed the increase of percent protein intake with age and great individual variations. Protein in the diet seemed to trigger appetite and increase food intake which resulted in higher weight gains and in more fat deposition in the body. The concentration of brain serotonin did not show any correlations with the intake of nutrients. the accumulation of body fat and the gain of body weight.
A large number of investigations have shown that changes in nutritional condition affect endocrine status in avian species. Herein, recent findings including novel peptides discovered by the development of the techniques in the field of molecular biology have been reviewed. The insulin-like growth factors (IGF-I and IGF-II) found in chickens have been characterized and shown to be 70 and 66 amino acid polypeptides, respectively. Plasma IGF-I level is very responsive to nutrition, Le. varying dietary proteins and energy intakes, and food restriction. Plasma IGF-II concentration is altered by nutritional deprivation to a much smaller extent than plasma IGF-I concentration. Almost all of the serum and tissue IGFs are found in a complex composed of IGF and IGF-binding protein (IGFBP). In the chicken plasma, the major IGFBP differs from that in mammalian plasma. The proglucagon mRNA encodes glucagon and two glucagon-like peptides (GLP-I and GLP-2). The intracerebroventricular administration of GLP-l strongly decreased food intake of chicks, and it was indicated that the inhibition of food intake by GLP-l was associated with neuropeptide Y, which is one of the neurotransmitters reported to enhance food intake.
Listeria monocytogenes poses an increasing health risk, which in part is due to increasing health risk, consumption of ready-to-eat food products and the introduction of increasing numbers of food products from regions with different dietary habits. L. monocytogenes can be present in meat, shellfish, vegetables, unpasteurised milk and soft cheese and poses a risk if food containing these products is stored at refrigeration temperature and is not properly heated before consumption, as L. monocytogenes is psychrophilic. Amplified-fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) analysis is the method of genotypic techinique in which adaptor oligonucleotides are ligated to restriction enzyme fragments and then used as target sites for primers in a PCR amplification. The amplified fragments are electrophoretically separated to give strain-specific band profiles. Single-enzyme approach that did not require costly equipment or reagents for the fingerprinting of strains of Listeria monocytogenes was developed. Single-enzyme amplified fragment length polymorphism (SE-AFLP) analysis was used to perform species and strain identification of Salmonella, Shigella, Yersinia and E. coli. By careful selection of AFLP primers, it was possible to obtain reproducible and sensitive identification to strain level. The AFLP patterns of L. monocytogenes are divided by the kinds of specimens in which were isolated. SE-AFLP fragments can be analyzed using standard gel electrophoresis, and can be easily scored by visual inspection, due to the low complexity of the fingerprint obtained by this method. These features make SE-AFLP suitable for use in either field or laboratory applications.
