The Effect of Female Adolescent Body-Related Variables, Self-Esteem and Internal Control on Eating Disorder Behavior (여자청소년의 신체관련변인, 자존감, 내적통제력이 섭식장애행동에 미치는 영향)

  • This study purports to understand the direct and indirect effects between eating disorder behavior of female adolescents and their body-related variables(concerning the degree of diet regime, weight control, body satisfaction, and obesity), self-esteem and internal control, by checking three sub-categorized behavior of eating disorders of diet behavior, bulimia behavior, and eating control behavior. The sample group used for the study consisted of 190 female high school students and 292 female university students; measurement devices used for the study were those of body-related variables, self esteem and internal control, and eating disorder behavior; and data analysis was performed using ${\chi}2$, t-test, Pearson's correlation, regression analysis and path analysis. The results are as follows. First, there is a significant difference between university students and high school students regarding their body satisfaction, weight control experience, and self esteem. University students are more satisfied with their body, have higher self esteem, and control their weight better than high school students. Second, diet behavior shows a correlation with the degree of diet interest, weight control experience, and body satisfaction. Body satisfaction and internal control proved to be correlated with bulimia behavior, while weight control experience, obesity, and self esteem were correlated with eating control behavior. Third, the variables that showed a direct influence on diet behavior as an eating disorder are diet interest, weight control experience, body satisfaction and obesity, in that the explanatory power of the variables is 60.7% with the highest mark on obesity. The variables that showed effects on bulimia are body satisfaction and internal control with an explanatory power of 2.8%. Indirect variables effecting bulimia include objects, diet interest, body satisfaction, and self esteem. The variable with a direct influence on eating control behavior was self esteem with and explanatory power of 4%, whereas the variables of objects, diet interest, body satisfaction, weight control experience, and internal control were all indirectly correlated with eating control behavior.

The Effect of Adolescent Body-Related Variables, Self-Esteem on Eating Disorder Behavior (남.여 고등학생의 다이어트 행동에 미치는 요인에 대한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the variables which had effects on deit behavior of male and female high school students. The proposed variables are their body-related variables(body satisfaction, weight control experience, the degree of diet interest, and obesity) and self-esteem. The sample group used for the study consisted of 359 high school students(male=168, female=191). Measurement scales used for the study were those of body-related variables, self esteem and eating disorder behavior, and data analysis was performed using $X^2$, t-test, Pearson's correlation, regression analysis. The results are as follows. First, there is a significant difference between male and female high school students regarding their obesity perceived by themselves, body satisfaction, the degree of diet interest, weight control experience, and deit behavior. Second, In male students, diet behavior shows a positive correlation with the degree of diet interest, weight control experience, and body satisfaction, but shows a negative correlation with body satisfaction. In female students, diet behavior is positively correlated with the degree of diet interest, weight control experience, and obesity, but negatively correlated with body satisfaction and self-esteem. Third, in male students, the variables that showed a influence on diet behavior as an eating disorder are weight control experience, body satisfaction and obesity, in that the explanatory power of the variables is 51.7% with the highest mark on obesity. In female, the variables that showed a influence on diet behavior as an eating disorder are the degree of diet interest, weight control experience, body satisfaction and obesity, in that the explanatory power of the variables is 66.0%.

A Comparison of Dietary Habits, Weight Control Behaviors, Eating Disorder Risk, and Depression of Middle School Girls according to Various Stages of Dieting (다이어트 진행 중인 동료와 비교한 다이어트 경험 및 계획을 가진 여중생의 식습관, 체중조절행위, 심리적 섭식장애 위험 및 우울증상)

  • Objectives: This study was conducted to compare dietary habits, weight control behaviors, eating disorder risk and depression among middle school girls who were at various stages of dieting. Methods: Subjects were 391 girls attending a middle school in Kyeonggido, Korea. All the information was gathered by self-administered questionnaires. Eating disorder risk and depression were assessed using EAT-26 and PHQ-9, respectively. Data were compared among 4 groups; no interest in a diet (N=112), had experienced dieting (N=86), on diet currently (N=71), and plan to diet (N=122). Results: A higher number of students currently on diet tended to be unsatisfied with their own weight (p < 0.01), overestimated their weight (p < 0.05), and weighed own body frequently (p < 0.001), compared to those with only experienced dieting in the past or those who plan to diet, despite similar weights and body mass index. The students who experienced dieting in the past or those who plan to diet appeared to have several undesirable as well as desirable dietary habits and their risk of eating disorder was significantly more prevalent compared to those without an interest in dieting (p < 0.01), although significantly less prevalent compared to those currently on a diet. Conclusions: We conclude that unnecessary dieting is common among middle school girls and providing proper education with regard to healthy weights is needed to enhance their physical as well as psychological wellbeing.

The Home-based Program for Child with Sensory Modulation Disorder: Case Study (감각조절장애 아동에 대한 가정 프로그램의 적용 - 사례연구)

  • Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of the home-based program composed of sensory diet for child with sensory modulation disorder. Method: The subject underwent the home-based program composed of sensory diet for 8 months. Evaluation tools we used are the Developmental Screening Test II(DDSTII) for developmental screening; the Short Sensory Profile(SSP), clinical observation and the clinical history record form for sensory integrative function; the Motor-Free Visual Perception Test(MVPT) and draw a person test for visual perception. Evaluation was executed before and after the program is provided. Results: The subject has showed remarkable improvement in developmental level, sensory integrative function and visual perceptual ability after went through the home-based program. Conclusion: The home-based program composed of sensory diet is effective for children with sensory modulation disorder when it is difficult to apply classical sensory integrative approach.

The Prevalence of Eating Disorder High Risk Group and Eating Disorder Among Bariatric Clinic Patients (비만클리닉 내원자 중 식이장애 고위험군 및 식이장애의 유병률)

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study was to investigate the prevalence of eating disorder high risk group and eating disorder among whom visit bariatric clinic for diet and its relationship with sex, ages and body measurement. Methods: 742 subjects who visit our clinic both at Seocho and Bundang from January to October in 2004 were surveyed by using EAT-26 to assess their eating attitude. Results: The prevalence of eating disorder high risk group was 17.9% and that of eating disorder was 3.2%. Mean score of EAT-26 was higher in females$(13.22{\pm}8.52)$ than males$(8.95{\pm}5.44)$ and was significantly higher in twenties than the thirties in females(p<0.05). Mean weight, BMI and % body fat were significantly lower in eating disorder high risk group than normal group(p<0.05). Conclusions: Eating disorder symptomatology was highly prevalent among whom visit bariatric clinic for diet.

Effects of Body Image and Restrained Eating on Eating Disorder, Dietary Intakes, Self Esteem and Sex Role Identity in College Women (여대생들의 신체상과 다이어트가 섭식장애, 식이섭취량 및 사회심리적 요인에 미치는 영향)

  • Thinness has become a symbol for beauty, acceptance and competence for women in our society, and pressure to diet because of this unrealistic standard is one factor reponsible for the increasing incidence of eating disorder. Three hundred fifty college women in the Chonbuk area were surveyed from May to June 1998, to investigate the relationship among body image, eating disorder, dietary intakes, self esteem and sex role identity. This study identified a subgroup of women who were relatively satisfied with their body weight and who did not diet. This group was compared with subgroups of women who were dissatisfied with their bodies and either were or were not restrained eaters. The dissatisfied/dieting women had the highest BMI, binge eating disorder and night eating syndrom, had significantly lower calorie, protein, iron, vitamin B$_1$, and vitamin B$_2$ intake compared with the satisfied/non-dieting women. The dissatisfied /dieting women, who had lower self-esteem compared with the satisfied/non-dieting women, but the frequency of sex role identity was similga among the groups of women. BMI and binge eating disorder were positively correlated(r=0.157, p<.01), but BMI and self esteem were negatively correlated(r=-0.202, p<0.01). Especially, binge eating disorder and self esteem were negatively correlated (r=-0.126, p<0.05).

Effect of n-3 Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids on Glucose Uptake of Soleus Muscle in NIDDM Diabetic Rats (NIDDM 당뇨병 흰쥐에서 n-3 다가불포화지방산이 가자미근의 Glucose Uptake에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids(PUFA) on glucose and lipids metabolism in high-fat diet rate. Rats were randomly assigned to normal, high-fat with n-3 PUFA and high-fat dietary groups. Experiments were carried out after 5 weeks feeding with prescriptive diets following 7 hrs fasting. Body weight gains tended to be higher in high-fat fed rats than normal. Blood glucose was increased (p<0.05) by high-fat diet compared with normal diet, and decreaseed (p<0.05) to normal level by n-3 PUFA. Plasma insulin level was significcantly higher (p<0.01) in high-fat diet rats than that of normal-diet rats, and also decreased (p<0.01) by n-3 PUFA. Glucose up take of soleus muscle in vitro was decreased markedly in high-fat fed rats than normal diet rats at 0, 1, 10, and 100nM insulin concentration. Therefore insulin sensitivity and responsiveness were decreased by high-fat diet. Omega-3 PUFA made a recover(p<0.01) insulin sensitivity to almost normal level, and improved (p<0.05) insulin responsiveness in some extent. In conclusion, the results suggest that metabolic disorder of glucose and insulin resistance of skeletal muscle are caused by high-fat diet and n-3 PUFA can ameliorate metabolic disorder and insulin resistance.

Awareness of Body Shape, Weight Control, and Eating Disorders in Female Adolescents Living in Seoul (서울에 거주하는 청소년기 여학생들의 체형인식도, 체중조절 및 식이장애 실태)

  • This study investigated dieting behavior, awareness of body shapes, and eating disorders in female adolescents according to age and BMI. The Eating Attitude Test for Korean Adolescents (EAT-26KA) and sociocultural standards were used to measure eating disorders and sociocultural attitudes related to appearance, respectively. In addition, the BDI (Beck Depression Inventory) scale was used to measure the correlation between disordered eating and depression. The data were collected from 390 female adolescents living in Seoul and were analyzed using SPSS15.0. The results indicated that subjects wanted to be thinner despite having a normal body weight (BMI 19.35${\pm}$2.73). They also thought of themselves as fat and with desires to be slimmer, and viewed "diet and exercise" as the best way to lose weight. About 67.4% of the respondents had tried a diet and had experienced dizziness, anorexia, and general exhaustion while dieting. Also, 5.1% of the subjects were classified as eating disorder and suffered from stress to be thin. In addition, 85.0% of the subjects with eating disorder had tried a diet due to "appearance". They thought that "being underweight" was an ideal body image and considered themselves fat, although their BMIs were in the normal range (19.94${\pm}$2.02). In terms of symptoms during dieting, many of the subjects dealing with an eating disorder felt dizzy, had low energy, and were depressed. In conclusion, we must educate young females about healthy eating and positive body image to prevent the development of adolescent eating disorders.

  • In patients with functional gastrointestinal disorders, dietary factors have an important effect on the development or worsening of gastrointestinal symptoms. Therefore, nutritional advice is often needed for the treatment of these patients. Although no firm conclusions can be drawn from current studies, the use of low-fat diets can be recommended in patients with functional dyspepsia. Constipation can be treated with a high-fiber diet. There are few studies in irritable bowel syndrome patients with diarrhea. The diet recommendations must be applied to each patient depending on symptoms.
