Since late of 2000, KIER has developed a novel pyrolysis process for production of fuel oils from polymer wastes. It could have been possible due to large-scale funding of the Resource Recycling R&D Center. The target was to develop an uncatalyzed, continuous and automatic process producing oils that can be used as a fuel for small-scale industrial boilers. The process development has proceeded in three stages bench-scale unit, pilot plant and demonstration plant. As a result, the demonstration plant having capacity of 3,000 tons/year has been constructed and is currently under test operation for optimization of operation conditions. The process consisted of four parts ; feeding system, cracking reactor, refining system and others. Raw materials were pretreated via shredding and classifying to remove minerals, water, etc. There were 3 kind of products, oils(80%), gas(15%), carbonic residue(5%). The main products i.e. oils were gasoline and diesel. The calorific value of gas has been found to be about 18,000kcal/$m^3$ which is similar to petroleum gas and shows that it could be used as a process fuel. Key technologies adopted in the process are 1) Recirculation of feed for rapid melting and enhancement of fluidity for automatic control of system, 2) Tubular reactor specially-designed for heavy heat flux and prevention of coking, 3)Recirculation of heavy fraction for prevention of wax formation, and 4) continuous removal & re-reaction of sludge for high yield of main product (oil) and minimization of residue. The advantages of the process are full automation, continuous operation, no requirement of catalyst, minimization of coking and sludge problems, maximizing the product(fuel oil) yield and purity, low initial investment and operation costs and environment- friendly process. In this presentation, background of pyrolysis technology development, the details of KIER pyrolysis process flow, key technologies and the performances of the process will be discussed in detail.

In order to investigate the character of air pollution by heavy metals and to elucidate the possible sources in Seoul city, this study was performed to measure the concentrations of heavy metals of total suspended particulate and air pollutants such as $SO_2, NO_2, CO, CH_4$, Non-methane hydrocarbon, ozone at the residential-traffic area (shinchon dong) in January and February, 1986. The results are as follows: 1. $SO_2$ and TSP concentration were 135ppb and 167 $\mug/m^3$ in average, respectively. 2. While concentrations of heavy metals such as Fe, Cu, Pb in the ambient air seems gradually decreasing annually, Ni compound has been shown the tendency of increasing. 3. Among heavy metals in TSP analysed, the iron was detected at the highest level, 0.905% and the cadimium was the lowest 0.004% in average, respectively. 4. V, Fe and Zn compounds in air were observed to be highly correlated with their correlation coefficients(r) higher than 0.7. Pb compound was highly correlated to the levels of Zn and Fe, however relatively less correlated to V compound. 5. Among concentrations of heavy metals in the particulates, V and Ni compounds were highly correlated with coefficient(r) of 0.8587; the cause might be imagined by the fact of releasing from combustion of fuel oil. Fe, Pb and Zn compounds were highly correlated $SO_2$ concentration. It might be explained that they were released by combustion of coal. 6. The level of $SO_2$ was highly correlated to most of heavy metals: especially correlation coefficient(r) to Pb compound was 0.9081. Pb compound was also highly correlated to NO, CO and TSP. TSP showed higher correlation to Pb and Cd compounds than to V and Ni compounds. It might be assumed that particulate was mainly produced by combusting coal from space heating and by exhausting gasoline and diesel oil from transportation rather than by burning fuel oil.
Various type of alternative fuel have been developed due to exhaustion of fossil fuel reserves and high oil price. Biodiesel is produced from the reaction of triglyceride, which is main component of animal fat and vegetable oil, and methanol by methanolysis as it is known for eco- friendly fuel for alternative petrodiesel. In this work, it was analyzed for the characteristics of the blended biodiesel with domestic petrodiesel according to blending ratio. Density, kinematic viscosity and flash point were increased with increasing the content of biodiesel. But the characteristic of blended biodiesel fuel were changed to aggravate in low temperature. Also, the derived cetane number(DCN) from IQT was increased by added biodiesel. Especially, the DCN of biodiesel from palm oil showed 71.26.

Recently a fuel oil of the diesel engine in the ship is being changed with low quality as the oil price is higher more and more. Therefore the wear and corrosion in all parts of the engine like cylinder liner ring groove of piston crown, spindle and seat ring of exhaust valve are increased with using of heavy oil of low quality In particular the degree of wear and corrosion in between valve spindle and seat ring are more serious compared to the other parts of the engine due to operating in severe environment such as the high temperature of exhaust gas and repeating impact. Thus the repair weld to the valve spindle and seat ring is a unique method to prolong the life of the exhaust valve in an economical point of view In this study. corrosion property of both weld metal zone and base metal was investigated with some electrochemical methods such as measurement of corrosion potential, cathodic and anodic polarization curves, cyclic voltammogram and polarization resistance etc. in 5% $H_2SO_4$ solution. in the case of being welded with some welding methods and welding materials to the exhaust valve specimen as the base metal. In all cases. the values of hardness of the weld metal zone were more high than that of the base metal. And their corrosion resistance were also superior to the base metal. The weld metal of A2F(AC SMAW: 2 pass welding with foreign electrode) showed a relatively good results to the corrosion resistance as well as the hardness compared to the ether welding methods and welding materials. Moreover it indicated that hardness of the weld metal by the domestic electrode was considerably high compared to that of the foreign electrode.

The synthesis of Fischer-Tropsch oil is the catalytic hydrogenation of CO to give a range of products, which can be used for the production of high-quality diesel fuel, gasoline and linear chemicals. Our cobalt catalyst was prepared Co/alumina, Co/silica and Co/titania by the incipient wetness impregnation of the nitrates of cobalt with supports. Co-based catalysts was calcined at $400^{\circ}C$ before being loaded into the FT reactors. After the reduction of catalyst has carried out under $450^{\circ}C$, FT reaction of the catalyst has carried out at GHSV of 4,000 under $200^{\circ}C$ and 20atm. From test results, the order of increasing activity for the catalyst was Co/alumina > Co/silica > Co/titania. When the content of Co metal such as 5, 12, 20 and 30wt% was changed, an CO conversion increased as the content of Co metal increased. The activity of catalyst has obtained the best value at 12wt% Co content.

The separation of sulfone components using light cycle oil(LCO) after oxidation was carried out by solvent extraction method using various polar solvents such as water, n-methyl-2-pyrrolidone(NMP), dimethyl sulfoxide, ethyl acetate, acetonitrile, dimethyl formamide, and methyl alcohol. It was found that phase separation between LCO layer and solvent occurred under mixed solvent adding a proper amount of water. The mixture solvent of NMP and water was a promising extraction solvent due to the selective removal and high distribution coefficient of sulfone component in LCO. 99.5% over of sulfur contents in LCO can be removed by 4 stages equilibrium extraction.
Recently a fuel oil of the diesel engine of the marine ship is being changed with heavy oil of low quality as the oil price is higher more and more. Therefore the wear and corrosion in all parts of the engine such as cylinder liner, piston crown, spindle and seat ring of exhaust valves are predominantly increased. In particular the degree of wear and corrosion of piston crown is more seriously compared to the other parts of the engine due to operating in severe environment such as the high temperature of exhaust gas and repeating impact. Thus the repair weldment of the piston crown is a unique method to prolong the its life in a economical point of view. In this case, filler metals having a high corrosion and wear resistance such as stellite 6, Inconel 625 and Inconel 718 are mainly being used for repair welding. However it has been often happened that piston crown on the ship,s job site is being actually inevitably welded with mild filler metals. Therefore in this study, filler metals such as E4301, E4313 and E4316 were welded at SS401 steel as the base metal, and corrosion property of their weld metals in the case of post weld heat treatment or not was investigated with some electrochemical methods such as measurement of corrosion potential, cathodic and anodic polarization curves, cyclic voltammogram and polarization resistance etc. in 0.1% $H_2SO_4$ solution. Corrosion resistance of the weld metal of E4301 was better than the other weld metals in the case of no heat treatment, however, its resistance was considerably decreased with post weld heat treatment(annealing:$625^{\circ}C$, 2 hr) compared to other weld metals. The weld metals of E4313 and E4316 showed a relatively good corrosion resistance by post weld heat treatment.

The durability factors of concrete has been researched by many researchers. Among the chemical ingression by acid, alkali, or salt, specially the ingression by sulfate has been actively studied and reported. Generally, for the oil type chemical, it is reported to cause the excessive expansion of cement mortar and further to cause the collapse, while there was no enough research on influence of oil type, relationship with microstructure of mortar, and collapse pattern. Therefore, in this research, using the various oils from general market, the degradation properties of the mortar mixtures with various mix designs were evaluated. according to the experiment, Bio diesel damaged worst and the mix design with less cement content showed the worst damage against oils.
Biodiesel has attracted great attention as an alternative renewable energy source for the replacement of petroleumbased diesel fuel, yet its high production cost due to expensive oil feedstock remainsas the major economical obstacle. In this study, we investigated catalysts and reaction conditions for the acid catalyzed pre-conversion of free fatty acid (FFA) to fatty acid methyl ester (FAME) in cheap low-grade oils of high acid value. The NaOH base catalyzed reaction of vegetable oil of the initial acid value of 2 mg KOH/g led to a high FAME conversion above 95.4%, but the conversion abruptly decreased at higher initial acid values. This base catalyzed reaction was practically ineffective displaying the FAME conversion below 15% even at the initial acid value of 10 mg KOH/g by the severe saponification side reaction. Among the various catalysts studied for the pre-conversion of FFA to FAME, Amberlyst-15 was the most effective in reducing the acid value, and the optimum reaction condition identified was $65^{\circ}C$ with oil to methanol ratio of 1:3 and catalyst concentration of 15% (w/w). As the results, great enhancements in the overall biodiesel conversion were achievable via a consecutive reaction of the acid catalyzed FFA pre-conversion to FAME under the optimal condition obtained with Amberlyst-15 followed by the NaOH base catalyzed reaction, far above the extent which was obtainable by the single NaOH catalyzed reaction.

In Asia countries the productions of ship building and marine engines have been increasing, specially Japanese marine industries have worked hard after 1960s and Korean ones after 1980s. Recently the other countries, as Taiwan and China, have been working so that these hour Asian countries are occuping the high level of shared ratio of productions for gross tonnages and horse powers, which are 74 and 64[%] of the world ones ($8.6\times10$+6[GT], $8.6\times10$+6[PS]) in 1994. Korean industries had the highest shared ratio of production of tanker vessel and 2 stroke diesel engine as 45[%]($2.2\times10$+6[GT]) and 37[%]($1.0\times10$+6[PS]) which were more than those of Japan as 34 and 16[%] in 1989 respectively. Some marine databases and their network links among Asian countries are proposed due to the posibility of collection and analyses with their own specifications by the marine industries and operators as well as Japanese ship reliability investigation works(SRIW) like SRIC in Japan. During 1966 and 1996 16 times of SRIW in Japan have been carried out by ship reliability investigation group(SRIG) in Japan. There have been collected and evaluated a great number of field data of failures and maintenances($700\times10$+3[occ], $1.6\times10$+6[MH}) during running hours($13.4\times10$+6[Hrs]), from which many kinds of evaluation indices could be gotten as the three indices of occurring rate$\lambda$(52.2[occ/1000Hrs]), average man-hour mh(2.29[MH/occ]) and manning index MI(119[MH/1000Hrs]). An estimation example having the three indices$\lambda$, mh and MI were shown by the SRIC 1990 Data Base in Japan for the two kinds of fuel oil suppling subsystems which are dual fuel oil one(DFOS) and mono fuel oil one(MFOS). Three indices MI, and mh for DFOS and MFOS results in 7.16 and 5.20[MH/1000Hrs], 2.63 and 2.06[occ/1000 Hrs]. Therefore the more simple subsystem MFOS can save approximately 30[%] of maintenance load. Finlly an utilization methods are shown for the SRIC in Japan by means of computer system and worlwide internet links.
