  • This work was conducted to figure out the atomization characteristics of three types of bio-diesel fuels using a common-rail injection system. The process of spray development was visualized by using a spray visualization system composed of a Nd:YAG laser and an ICCD camera, The spray tip penetrations were analyzed based on the frozen images from the spray visualization system. On the other hand, the microscopic atomization characteristics such as the distributions of SMD and axial mean velocity were measured by using a phase Doppler particle analyzer system, It is revealed that the sprays of the bio-diesel fuels have larger SMD than that of diesel fuel mainly due to high viscosity of bio-diesel. Different characteristics of bio-diesel fuels were also measured in spray tip penetrations according to the fuels and mixing ration.

  • Environmental protection on the ocean has been interested and nowadays the International maritime organization(IMO) has advanced on the prevention of air pollution from ships. This study presents the emission characteristics of 4 stroke propulsion diesel engine in E2 cycle (constant speed) and E3 cycle (propeller curved speed). Also the effects of important operating parameters in terms of intake air pressure and temperature, and maximum combustion pressure are described on the specific emissions. Emissions measurement and calculation are processed according to IMO technical code. The results show that NOx emission level in E3 cycle is higher than E2 cycle due to lower engine speed and lower maximum combustion pressure by retarding fuel injection timing. Intake air temperature has strong influence on NOx emission production. And CO, HC emissions are not affected by maximum combustion pressure and intake air pressure and temperature.

  • It has been recognized that alternative fuels such as Liquid Petroleum Gas (LPG) show less polluting combustion characteristics than diesel fuel. Furthermore, engine performance is expected to be nearly equal to that of the diesel engine if direct-injection stratified-charge combustion of the LPG can be adopted in the spark-ignition engine. However, spray characteristics of LPG are quite different from those of diesel fuel. understanding the spray characteristics of LPG and evaporating processes are very important for developing efficient and low emission LPG engines optimized in fuel injection control and combustion processes. In this study, the LPG spray characteristics and evaporating processes were investigated using the Schlieren and Mie scattering optical system and single-hole injectors in a constant volume chamber. The results show that the mixture moves along the impingement wall that reproduced the piston bowl and reaches in ignition spark plug. LPG spray receives more influence of ambient pressure and temperature significantly than that of n-dodecane spray.

  • The use of electrokinetic injection and transport for the distribution of an NAPLs-degrading microorganism in a sandy soil bed was studied. After the injection of the cell into cathode side of bed, an electric current was applied. The transport of cell though the sandy soil was achieved by electokinetics, mainly by electrophoresis, The pH control in electrode chamber plays un important role to achieve desirable cell transport because H$^{+}$ generated at anode is toxic or inhibits the transport of cells. Electokinetic distribution rate of bacterial cells changed depending on the applied electric current and pH. The degradation of diesel by electrokinetically transport cells were monitored.d.

  • In this study, the combustion and emission characteristics of waste cooking oil biodiesel was investigated. The fuel was injected from 5 CAD (Crank angle degree) ATDC (After top dead center) to -60 CAD ATDC by 5 CAD with 800 bar and 1600 bar injection pressure. Generally, the hydrocarbon, carbon monoxide and smoke emissions from biodiesel fuel were lower than the emission levels of diesel fuel. However, the emission characteristic of biodiesel got worse than diesel when the fuel was injected earlier than -30 CAD ATDC. $NO_x$ emission from biodeisel was higher than diesel fuel in all experimental conditions.

  • Hydrotreated biodiesel (HBD) would be one of the promising alternative fuels instead of current biodiesel. In this study, spray characteristics in terms of spray penetration and spray angle were conducted experimentally including calculated SMDs as well. The ambient pressures of 1, 3, and 5 MPa and injection pressures of 30, 80, and 130 MPa were introduced and the fuels employed were petro-diesel, and 2, 10, 20, 30, and 50% for hydrotreated biodiesel, respectively. The result of this study found that the more HBD blended diesels have the slightly shorter spray tip penetration lengths especially on the lowest injection pressure and at the highest ambient pressure, but have the larger spray angles and SMDs than petro-diesel. Consequently, this study found that HBD has a little bit merits and demerits of macro- and micro- spray patterns compared to petro-diesel.

  • In this study, three visualization methods, Schlieren, Shadowgraph, and Mie-scattering, were applied to compare diesel and gasoline spray structures. Fuels were injected into a high pressure/high temperature constant volume chamber under the same ambient pressure and temperature condition of low load in gasoline direct injection compression ignition (GDCI) engine. Two injection pressures (40 and 80 MPa), two ambient pressures (4.2 and 1.7 MPa), and two ambient temperatures (908 and 677 K) were use. The images from the different methods were overlapped to show liquid and vapor phases more clearly. It was found that the gasoline fuel is more appropriate to form a lean mixture.

  • Environmental protection on the ocean has been interested and nowadays the International Maritime Organization(IMO) has advanced on the prevention of air pollution from ships. This study presents the performance and the emission characteristics of 4 stroke marine diesel engines for generation application in D2 cycle(IMO mode). The effects of important operating parameters, such as intake air pressure. intake air temperature and maximum combustion pressure on NOx emissions were also described. Emissions measurement and calculation are processed according to IMO Technical Code. The results show that the maximum combustion pressure by fuel injection timing control and intake air temperature has strong influence on NOx emission production. But NOx emission is not affected by intake air pressure and exhaust gas back pressure.

  • Spray impingement and fuel film formation models with cavitation have been developed and incorporated into the computational fluid dynamics code, STAR-CD. The spray/wall interaction process was modeled by considering the effects of surface temperature conditions and fuel film formation. The behavior of fuel droplets after impingement was divided into rebound, spread and splash using the Weber number and parameter K(equation omitted). The spray impingement model accounts for mass conservation, energy conservation, and heat transfer to the impinging droplets. The fuel film formation model was developed by integrating the continuity, momentum, and energy equations along the direction of fuel film thickness. Zero dimensional cavitation model was adopted in order to consider the cavitation phenomena and to give reasonable initial conditions for spray injection. Numerical simulations of spray tip penetration, spray impingement patterns, and the mass of film-state fuel matched well with the experimental data. The spray impingement and fuel film formation models have been applied to study spray/wall impingement in high-speed direct injection diesel engines.

  • A new concept of reduced quasi-dimensional combustion model for a direct injection diesel engine is developed based on the previously developed quasi-dimensional multi-zone model to improve the computational efficiency. In the reduced model, spray penetration and air entrainment are calculated for a number of zones within the spray while three zones with aggregated spray zone concept are used for the calculation of spray combustion and emission formation processes. It is also assumed that liquid phase fuel appears only near the nozzle exit during the breakup period and that spray vaporization is immediate in order to reduce the computational time. Validation of the reduced model with experimental data demonstrated that the new model can predict engine performance and NO and soot emissions reasonably well compared to the original model. With the new concept of reduced model, computational efficiency is significantly improved as much as 200 times compared to the original model.
