Running tests on roads were conducted to clarify the influences of road infrastructure, traffic condition and vehicle's emission level to the amount of emission at local roadsides, and to reveal the operation patterns which can reduce the emission peaks. NOx emission peaks of two light duty freight diesel vehicles which have different emission levels were evaluated by using an on-board measurement system. Tests were carried out with various payload conditions and road conditions. As a result many NOx emission peaks were observed when the vehicles were starting or accelerating at intersections. The test vehicle which has higher emission level caused higher frequency and level of NOx emission peaks. Shifting up at lower engine speed in combination with lower acceleration brought out not only reduction of NOx emission peaks level but also of $CO_2$ mass emission.

In this research computational methods for the droplet atomization and spray wall impingement are studied for the non-evaporating diesel fuel spray. The TAB(Taylor Analogy Breakup) model and Wave model are compared with experiments in order to describe droplet atomization process. The Watkins model and O'Rourke model are compared to simulate the spray wall impingement. As a result, It is found that the application of the Wave model has a good agreement with the experimental data in the case of high pressure injection. With regard to wall Impingement phenomena, it is found that the Watkins model is appropriate to the high temperature cylinder wall condition, while the O'Rourke model is appropriate to cold starting problem.
Recently, 1-D model-based engine development using virtual engine system is getting more attention than experimental-based engine development due to the advantages in time and cost. Injection rate profile is the one of the main parameters that determine the start and end of combustion. Therefore, it is essential to set up a sophisticated model to accurately predict the injection rate as starting point of virtual engine system. In this research, procedure of 1-D model setup based on AMESim is introduced to predict the dynamic behavior and injection rate of diesel injector. As a first step, detailed 3D cross-sectional drawing of the injector was achieved, which can be done with help of precision measurement system. Then an approximate AMESim model was provided based on the 3D drawing, which is composed of three part such as solenoid part, control chamber part and needle and nozzle orifice part. However, validation results in terms of total injection quantity showed some errors over the acceptable level. Therefore, experimental work including needle movement visualization, solenoid part analysis and flow characteristics of injector part was performed together to provide more accuracy of 1-D model. Finally, 1-D model with the accuracy of less than 10% of error compared with experimental result in terms of injection quantity and injection rate shape under normal temperature and single injection condition was established. Further work considering fuel temperature and multiple injection will be performed.

Even though the differential drag type machines of the vertical wind turbines are a bit less efficient than the lift type machines such as Darrieus type machines, they have an advantage of low starting torque. The flapping blade type wind turbine is a specific type of the differential drag machines, and it has no need for orientation as well as quite low starting torque. This work is to develop an innovative 5kW class flapping type vertical wind turbine system which will be applicable to a hybrid power generation system driven by the diesel engine and the wind turbine. The parametric study was carried out to decide an optimum aerodynamic configuration of the wind turbine blade. In order to evaluate the designed blade, the subscale wind tunnel test and the performance test were carried out, and their test results were compared with the analysis results.

This paper discusses dynamic characteristics of a urea-SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) system. The urea flow rate to improve NOx conversion efficiency is generally determined by parameters such as catalyst temperature and space velocity. The urea-SCR system was tested in the various engine operating conditions governing the raw NOx emission levels, space velocity. and SCR catalyst temperature. These experiments include cold-transients to determine catalyst light-off temperature and urea flow rate transients. Likewise. ammonia storage dynamics was also investigated. The cold-transient results indicate the light-off temperature of the catalysts used in these experiments was $200-220^{\circ}C$. The ammonia storage and urea flow rate transients all indicate very slow dynamics (on the order of seconds) which presents control challenges for mobile applications. The results presented in this paper should provide an excellent starting point in developing a functional in-vehicle urea-SCR system.
LPG(Liquified Petroleum Gas) fuel for vehicles has lots of advantages such as low emission level, cheaper fuel cost and enough infrastructure. Therefore it arouses interest as an alternative engine to reduce emission of diesel engines. Especially MPI(Multi Point Injection) type LPLi(Liquid Phase LPG injection) system could have overcome the disadvantages of mixer types such as low engine performance, decreased charging efficiency and cold starting difficulty. However ice formation on the nozzle tip and intake port due to the freezing of moisture around the components is often observed in LPLi systems. This icing phenomenon is the direct cause of unstable engine combustion, resulting in engine emissions. Therefore in this research, a spray visualization test for LPG injection was carried out to obtain the basic information of an LPLi injector, then the effects of butane and propane mixing rates on ice formation at the intake port and nozzle tip was investigated. As a result, the icing characteristics of them showed contrary results according to the mixing rates.
Air Starter motors are used for the start of medium-speed diesel engine. One of the main part of air starting motors is the axial turbine stage. In this study, design of 1-stage axial type turbine for 14kw class air starter motors has been performed. The turbine blade was designed based on mean-line analysis. 1-D design calculation and numerical analysis with CFD were conducted iteratively. The validation between 1-D design method and numerical analysis for axial clearance has been performed. It revealed that there is optimum axial clearance of turbine design.

A 150 m$^{3}$/hr, 30 kg/cm$^{2}$, air-cooled 3-stage reciprocating air compressor is designed to be used in starting large diesel engines. A basic design procedure is presented to meet the targeted pressure and flow rate, and especially the volumetric efficiency. Temperature and stress analyses of the cylinder are performed using FEM modelings. The dynamics of valve system is analyzed and stress at the valve seat due to valve impact is evaluated. To reduce friction loss and wear at the compressor engine system, tribological design practices are suggested. Fin-type coolers are designed to dissipate generated compression heat at each stage. Finally, a prototype is manufactured and performance test is carried out utilizing an air tank. Performance results are compared to the design targets, other foreign specifications, and some quality standards.
The aim of this study was to improve the startability of the diesel engine at low temperature. The specific objective was to determine the optimum type of precombustion chamber. The eight different types of precombustion chamber and two different types of the cylinder head were designed and tested by $2^7$ factorial experiments with four replications. The lowest starting temperature for first operation, the maximum output, and the specific fuel consumption at full load and overload were checked and analyzed. The results of the study are summarized as follows; 1. The lowest starting temperature was lowered as much as $2.4^{\circ}C$ and the maximum output was increased as much as 0.3 ps with respect to the difference in the relative angle of the main passageway against the piston head from 20 degree to 18 degree. 2. The lowest starting temperature and the maximum out-put were lowered as much as $3.3^{\circ}C$ and 0.3 ps respectively with respect to the difference in the angle of the cylinder head groove from 20 degree to 18 degree. 3. The lowest starting temperature and the maximum out put were lowered as much as $2^{\circ}C$ and 0.2 ps respectively with respect to the difference in the length of the precombustion chamber from 17.5 mm to 15.5mm. 4. There was no significant difference in the startability but the maximum output was increased as much as 0.2 ps with respect to the difference in the diameter of the main passageway from 4.8mm to 4.5mm. 5. The lowest starting temperature was obtained under the condition at 47 degree in the angle of the main passageway and at 18 degree in the angle of the cylinder head groove. The maximum output and the minimum specific fuel consumption was obtained under the condition at 4.5mm in the diameter of the main passageway and at 17.5mm in the length of the precombustion chamber. 6. The angle of the cylinder head groove and the main passageway appeared to the major factors affecting the startability significantly. The interaction between the diameter of the main pass ageway and the length of the precombustion chamber had an significant influence on the maximum output. So it would be recommended to study further on the interaction between two factors mentioned above by expanding their levels. 7. The optimum condition suggested by this study could lower the starting temperature by $6^{\circ}C$ compared to the conventional precombustion chambers.
This paper presents improvement of the production process of a unified fuel heater with the help of the performance evaluation system. In order to enhance a starting capability of diesel-engine car, the unified fuel heater is proposed, which consists of main body, upper plate, stopper, lower plate, PTC, screw, bimetal and terminals. In the proposed heater, the sensor is combined with heater body not only to maximize the performance of car but also to reduce the production cost. The performance test chamber is proposed to evaluate the performance of heater. Especially, an effective manufacturing progress for assembling the heater elements can cut down expenses.
