  • This research is about the exhaust gas and driving performance test which are for CNG-Diesel dual fuel engine. The CNG-Diesel dual fuel engine converted from 2500cc diesel has two steps of injection systems; small amount of diesel is injected to mixture CNG in cylinder to ignite before CNG is injected into each intake manifold to form mixture. The amounts of output power and emission in duel fuel consumption were measured by engine dynamometer and exhaust gas analyzer. Over 90% of diesel consumption reduction, similar driving performance to current diesel engine and reduced emission on $CO_2$ and PM, respectively, were indicated through the measurements. The two steps of system were applied to vehicle to investigate exhaust gas characteristics and driving performance via NEDC mode and real driving test. Additional oxidation catalyst was applied to reduce emission on the test vehicle and the NEDC mode test showed the reduction of Co, $CO_2$, Pm and THC.

  • Diesel particulate matter (DPM) is known to be one of the major harmful emissions produced by diesel engines. The majority of diesel particles are in the range of smaller than $I{\mu}\textrm{m}$. Because of their tiny volume, ultrafine diesel particles contribute very little to the total mass concentration which is currently regulated for automobile emissions. Diesel particles are known to have deleterious effects upon human health because they penetrate human respiratory tract and have negative effects on the health. The measurement of the number distribution of nanometer size particles (nanoparticles) in the diesel exhaust emission is important in order to evaluate their environmental and health impact, and to develop new types of diesel particulate filters. In this study, we directly sampled particulate matters emitted from a diesel truck mounted on the chassis dynamometer by a flow separator and dilution system, and measured the nanoparticles using two types of differential mobility analyzers combined with a Faraday cup electrometer (FCE) and a condensation particle counter (CPC). The particle size distributions were analyzed by changing engine operation condition, i.e. ratio of engine loading. The total number concentration of particles were increased with the engine loading ratio and the nanoparticles (less than 50nm) were affected by hydrocarbon (HC) concentration in the diesel exhaust.

  • To improve efficiency of diesel engine which requests high output recently and is used all kinds of industrial areas, this thesis experimented dynamic characteristics and exhaust gas characteristics of diesel engine installed by supercharger of correspondent output 200HP and natural inhalation diesel engine through the dynamometer and exhaust gas analyzer in same condition. As the result of experiment with natural inhalation diesel engine and diesel engine installed by supercharger, there were a few differences of output, but dynamic characteristics at high speed showed increased output and efficiency of the engine installed by supercharger. On the contrary, in exhaust gas characteristics, the model installed by supercharger showed increased exhaust gas such as $NO_X$, $O_2$, etc, but added value of exhaust gas is low if considering $CO_2$ reduction and efficiency of dynamic characteristic's increase. Based on the results, diesel engine installed by supercharger is expected to show higher economic feasibility than natural inhalation diesel than natural inhalation engine from an angle of efficiency. • A control program of an engine control module (ECM) was developed, and its control performance was verified on a 750Ps marine diesel engine. The control method was designed for an engine rotational speed control system. For ECM hardware, the commercial rapid control prototype (RCP) ECM was used. The programming tool for control algorithm development was the MatLab/Simulink. The main control algorithm assembled many control models as engine cranking, run, and stall. Each model has sub-models to input/output control signals. The target engine speed was input signal from a speed control lever, and control output signal of the ECM was sent to the unit-injectors for fuel injection. The engine test was performed under various conditions of engine rotational speeds and dynamometer loads. The test results show that the control function of the ECM is suitable for electrical marine diesel engines.

  • Our environment is faced with serious problems related to the air pollution from automobiles in these days. In particular, the exhaust emissions of diesel engines are recognized as main causes of the air pollution. CRDI(common rail direct injection) diesel engine is widely used for the sake of minimization on exhaust emission. Because biodiesel fuel is a renewable and alternative fuel for diesel engine, its usability is expanded. In this study, a common rail diesel engine was run with 5% of biodiesel fuel(BDF 5%) more than 150 hours. Engine dynamometer testing was completed at regularly scheduled intervals to investigate the engine performance and exhaust emissions. The data of engine performance and exhaust emissions was sampled at 1 hour intervals for analysis. When a common rail diesel engine runs on BDF 5% for long time, power and energy consumption of the engine are similar to the case using diesel fuel. The smoke emission of BDF 5% was reduced in comparison with diesel fuel, that is, it was reduced approximately 15% at 4000rpm, and load of 90%. And, CO and $CO_2$ were reduced, too. On the other hand, NOx emission of biodiesel fuel was slightly increased about 2%, but it was almost same as a commercial diesel fuel.

  • A CRDI diesel engine used to commercial vehicle was fueled with 20% biodiesel fuel(BDF 20) in excess of 150 hours. Engine dynamometer testing was completed at regularly scheduled intervals to monitor the engine performance and exhaust emissions. The engine performance and exhaust emissions were sampled at 1 hour interval for analysis, Also, BSEC with BDF 20 resulted in lower than with diesel fuel. Since the biodiesel fuel used in this study includes oxygen of about 11%, it could influence the combustion process strongly. So, BDF 20 resulted in lower emissions of carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, and smoke emissions without special increase of oxides of nitrogen than diesel fuel. It was concluded that there was no unusual deterioration of the engine, or any unusual change in exhaust emissions from using the BDF 20.
