Effect of roof diaphragm on masonry structures under dynamic loading

  • The structural collapse of masonry structure under dynamic loading displays many possible failure mechanisms often related to interaction between structural components. Roof collapse is one of the major damage mechanisms observed in masonry structures during an earthquake. Better connection between the roof diaphragm and walls may be preventing roof collapse, but it can affect other failure mechanisms. In spite of this fact, less attention has been paid to the influence of the roof diaphragm effect on masonry structures and little research has been implemented in this field. In the present study, the roof diaphragm effect on the unreinforced masonry structure under dynamic loading has been experimentally investigated. Three one-quarter scale one-story adobe masonry house models with different roof conditions have been tested by subjecting them to sinusoid loading on a shaking table simulator. Phenomena such as failure pattern, dynamic performance of masonry structure were examined.

삼중방심 치험 1례 (Cor Triatriatum (A case report))

  • Cor triatriatum is a rare congenital malformation of the heart in which a diaphragm stretches in a transverse plane through the left pulmonary venous chamber, thus creates two subchambers. The proximal chamber connects with the pulmonary veins, and the distal one has left auricle and the mitral valve. A 3 year old boy who had Cor triatriatum underwent surgical excision of the abnormal diaphragm in March, 1989 in Chungnam University Hospital. An obliquely oriented fibromuscular diaphragm divided the left atrium into a proximal chamber which was connected to the pulmonary veins and a distal chamber which had the atrial appendage and the mitral valve. The opening in the diaphragm was 5 mm in diameter. There were no associated abnormalities. The abnormal diaphragm was completely excised. The postoperative result was excellent.

흉강경 수술을 이용한 횡격막 파얼의 치유 -1예 보고- (Thoracoscopic Surgery for Diaphragmatic Rupture -One case report -)

  • 외상성 횡격막 파열은 방사선 검사로 진단하기가 어려운 경우가 빈번하다. 다발성 손상을 동반한 37세 남자 환자에서 횡격막 파열이 의심되었으나, 흉부 CT 검사에서는 횡격막 파열을 확인할 수는 없었고 진단을 위해 흉강경을 이용한 수술을 결정하였다. 횡격막 신경이 횡격막으로 들어가는 부위로부터 8 cm정도의 횡격막 파열이 있었고, 횡격막 마비를 동반하였다. 작업창을 5 cm크기로 추가하여 만든 후, 파열된 횡격막을 연속 봉합하였으며, 동시에 횡격막 주름성형술을 시행하였다. 수술 3개월후 시행한 흉부 방사선 사진에서 만족할 만한 결과를 보였다.

  • A mechanical type pulsation dampener for the diaphragm metering pump has been developed. The pulsation pressure is an inevitable phenomenon for the positive displacement pump such as cam operated or solenoid operated metering pump. The pulsation pressure of the metering pump could be the noise source and would be harmful for the piping system which delivers hydraulic fluid. Developed pulsation dampener consists of three coil springs which have different spring constant and height each other. Depending on pressure magnitude of the piping system, total hydraulic pressure on damping diaphragm which compresses coil springs will be varied. Force equilibrium of the pulsation dampener will be set by manual by adjusting the compressed coil spring height. During the discharge stroke, pulsation dampener stores potential energy that is released as the pumping diaphragm back to an initial position during the suction stroke.

  • Traumatic diaphragm hernia can occur in rare cases and generally accompanies thoracic or abdominal injuries. When suffering from ankylosing spondylitis, a small force can develop into vertebral fracture and an adjacent structural injury, and lead to diaphragm hernia without accompanying concomitant thoracoabdominal injury. A high level of suspicion may be a most reliable diagnostic tool in the detection of a diaphragm injury, and we need to keep in mind a possibility in a patient with ankylosing spondylitis and a thoracolumbar fracture, even in the case of minor trauma.

  • Diaphragm compressors are used for a hydrogen compression because it can achieve high gas pressure with high purity. But diaphragm's lifetime may depend on the shape of the cavity and deflection from fluctuation the pressure change, which is necessary to monitored. In this study, the gas and hydraulic oil pressure in the cavity were measured as piston speed varies for diaphragm compressor. The results show pressure change quantities were reduced and maximum pressure points are delayed as the piston moves faster. And the hydraulic pressure were elevated as gas pressure elevated. And the compression period was more faster than expansion period.

  • Using the anisotropic etching characteristics or $N_2H_4-H_2O$ solution, Si diaphragm was fabricated for the integrated sensor. The optimal composition and temperature of the solution in Si etching process was established to be 50mol% $N_2H_4$ in water at $105{\pm}2^{\circ}C$ for both higher etch rate(=$2.6{\mu}m/min$) and better surface quality of etched {100} planes. Under the optimal etching condition, the electrochemical etch stop technique was employed to form Si diaphragm for pressure sensor and diaphragm thickness was exactly controlled to $20{\pm}2{\mu}m$.

  • This study uses a characteristic function to explain correlations between the objective function and design variables. Analysis of means and table of orthogonal array were carried out. The change of shape of diaphragm, thickness of diaphragm and voice coil weight based on the table of orthogonal array Is made. Therefore this study carried to decide design variables for minimizing 1st natural frequency and maximizing 2nd natural frequency of diaphragm using design of experiments and characteristic function with constraints. we showed improved design variables.

  • A 48-year-old man came to the emergency department with altered consciousness and hemoperitoneum following a pedestrian traffic accident. He underwent immediate emergency laparotomy, and on the second day, he required craniectomy because of increase of intracranial hemorrhage. A chest radiograph taken 7 days after admission, showed elevation of the right hemi-diaphragm, and follow-up chest CT showed a right-sided rupture of the diaphragm, which was surgically repaired. Rupture of the diaphragm can be easily overlooked and the diagnosis delayed, especially in unstable patients with multiple trauma or altered level of consciousness, as in the case reported here.

  • This paper presents the novel fabrication of an electromagnetic micro actuator with a corrugated diaphragm and a flat one. The actuator consists of a Parylene diaphragm with a spiral copper coil and a permanent magnet. The cower coil is fabricated by electroplating and patterning. As the further works, the frequency response of the actuator are obtained by using a laser vibrometer and the static deflection of the actuator diaphragm are measure by using laser displacement meter. The corrugated diaphragm is expected to be better than the flat one with respect to the actuator performance.
