  • Ferromagnetic Mn-Al nanoparticles were prepared using a plasma arc discharge method. The influence of the process parameters on the vaporization rate, composition, particle size, and magnetic properties of the as-produced nanoparticles was investigated. The Mn content was found to be higher in the nanoparticles than in the corresponding mother materials, although the difference diminished with the reaction time. As the $H_2$ content in the reaction gas increased, both the vaporization rate and the particle size increased. With 30 at.% Mn, the average particle diameter was 35.2 nm under a pure Ar gas condition, whereas it was 95.4 nm at a Ar:$H_2$ ratio of 60:40. With the addition of a small amount of carbon, ${\varepsilon}$-phase nanoparticles were successfully synthesized. After a heat treatment in a vacuum for 30 min at $500^{\circ}C$, the nonmagnetic ${\varepsilon}$-phase was transformed into the ferromagnetic ${\tau}$-phase, and a very high coercivity of nearly 5.6 kOe was achieved.

  • In this paper, the rheological characteristics of slurry used fur slurry-shield tunnels were studied with emphasis on penetration characteristics. The slurry penetration was modeled by soil-filter clogging theory. The coefficient of particle deposition was suggested as an indicator of sin clogging during tunnel construction and calculated through model tests. The measured slurry weight, clogged in the base soil, was compared with the value obtained from clogging theory. Based on the testing results, a stability analysis of a tunnel face was performed to pinpoint the most influential factor affecting stability of slurry-shield tunnels. It was found that the stability of tunnel face is dependent on the ratio of infiltration velocity to the coefficient of particle deposition, and the penetration distance of slurry increases with the ratio of infiltration velocity to the coefficient of particle deposition. Since the stability of tunnel face decreases with the slurry penetration distance, it was necessary to add some additives in order to reduce the slurry penetration distance. It was found that the ground condition needs additives when the soil has the effective particle diameter$(D_{10})$ larger than 0.75mm. It was also found that the tunnel face stability due to slurry penetration is significantly affected by the tunnel advance rate.

  • Effect of height on the size and shape of carbon nanotube (CNT) aggregates in the freeboard region of a bubbling fluidized bed ($0.15m\;i.d.{\times}2.6m\;high$) has been determined. Feret diameter and Heywood diameter of the CNT aggregates in the freeboard region of fluidized bed increased with increasing gas velocity. The average aggregate diameters and CNT particle number in the aggregates decreased with increasing of height in the freeboard. Aspect ratio increased as the location was closer to the surface of the dense phase, but decreased at the highest location. Solidity did not show any significant changes with height. The results showed the aggregates formation process is affected by the height in the freeboard. A correlation was proposed to predict the Heywood diameter of the CNT aggregates.

  • This study analyzed for hydrodynamic dispersion characteristics of multi-soil layer (Silt and clay, Find sand, Coarse sand), data of a field tracer test on the multi-soil layer and data of laboratory column experiments on the samples on each soil layers. Through the analysis of permeability and flow, MS (Silt and clay) and FS (Fine sand), which were low effective porosity, were higher average linear velocity while CS (Coarse sand), which was high effective porosity, was higher hydraulic conductivity. Hydraulic conductivity function based on average soil particle diameter was assumed Y=$3.49{\times}10^{-8}e^{15320x}$ and coefficient of determination was 0.90. Average linear velocity function based on average soil particle diameter was assumed Y=$1.88{\times}10^{-7}e^{11459x}$ and coefficient of determination was 0.81. Longitudinal dispersivity function based on average soil particle diameter was Y = 0.00256$e^{5971x}$ and coefficient of determination was 0.98. According to the linear regression analysis of average linear velocity and longitudinal dispersivity, assumed function was Y = 21.7527x + 0.0063, and coefficient of determination was 0.9979. The ratio of field scale/laboratory scale was 54.09, it exhibited scale-dependent effect of hydrodynamic dispersion. Field longitudinal dispersivity (1.39m) was 7.47 times as higher than longitudinal dispersivity estimated by the methods of Xu and Eckstein (1995). Hydrodynamic dispersion on CS layer was occurred mainly by diffusion flow in the test aquifer.

  • Goethite, ${\alpha}$-FeOOH have various applications such as absorbent, pigment and source for magnetic materials. Goethite particles were synthesized in a two step process, where $Fe(OH)_2$ were synthesized in nitrogen atmosphere using $FeSO_4$ as a raw material in the first process, and after that acicular goethite particles were obtained in an air oxidation process of $Fe(OH)_2$ in highly alkaline aqueous solution. Their phase and microstructure were investigated with XRD and FE-SEM. It was found that the morphology of goethite and the ratio of length-to-width (aspect ratio) of acicular goethite are dependent on the some factors such as R value ($OH^-/Fe^{2+}$), air flow rate and pH conditions. In particular, R value has the strongest influence on the synthesized goethite morphology. It is considered that the optimal value R is 4.5 because X-ray diffraction peaks of goethite have the highest intensity at that value. Morphology of goethite particles was controlled by air flow rates, showing that their size and aspect ratio are getting smaller and decrease, respectively as air flow rate increases. The largest goethite particle obtained is about 1,500 nm in length and 150 nm in diameter.

  • Characteristics of heat transfer were investigated in a three-phase swirling fluidized bed whose diameter was 0.102 m and 2.5 m in height. Effects of gas and liquid velocities, particle size and liquid swirling ratio ($R_S$) on the immersed heater-to-bed overall heat transfer coefficient were examined. The heat transfer characteristics between the immersed heater and the bed was well analyzed by means of phase space portraits and Kolmogorov entropy(K) of the time series of temperature difference fluctuations. The phase space portraits of temperature difference fluctuations became stable and periodic and the value of Kolmogorov entropy tended to decrease with increasing the value of liquid swirling ratio from 0.1 to 0.4. The value of Kolmogorov entropy exhibited its minimum with increasing liquid swirling ratio. The value of overall heat transfer coefficient (h) showed its maximum with the variation of liquid velocity, bed porosity or liquid swirling ratio, but it increased with increasing gas velocity and particle size. The value of K exhibited its maximum at the liquid velocity at which the h value attained its maximum. The overall heat transfer coefficient and Kolmogorov entropy were well correlated in terms of dimensionless groups and operating variables.

  • Concentration of particulate nitrate classified by formation mechanism and particle diameter in ambient air was determined from Feb. to Oct. 1993. Sampling was carried out using a two-stage Andersen air sampler at the top of a five-story building located at Kon-Kuk University in seoul. Concentration of N $H_{4}$N $O_{3}$ in TSP was measured by pyrolysis of sample filters at 160.deg.C for 1hr. concentration of N $H_{4}$N $O_{3}$ was higher in winter time compared with that in summmer time. Also, concentration of N $H_{4}$N $O_{3}$ was higher in fine particles compared with that in coarse particle. The range of N $H_{4}$N $O_{3}$ concentration was between 2.9 and 9.9.mu.g/ $m^{3}$. Weight fraction of N $H_{4}$N $O_{3}$ in total particulate nitrate was 31.1 .sim. 59.5%, and weight fraction of N $H_{4}$N $O_{3}$ in TSP was 2.1 .sim. 11.2%. Concentration of NaN $O_{3}$, which originated from sea salt, was highest in spring time and lowest in summer time, and the concentration range was between 0.1 and 0.7.mu.g/ $m^{3}$. NaN $O_{3}$/TSP ratio was very low (0.1 .sim. 0.4%) indicating that the portion of NaN $O_{3}$in TSP was negligible. Concentration of particulate nitrate originated from soil was 2.4 .sim. 2.9.mu.g/ $m^{3}$. Weight fraction of that in total particulate nitrate was 14.0 .sim. 37.1%.

  • Size and shape of carbon nanotube (CNT) agglomerates in the dilute phase of a bubbling fluidized bed ($0.15m\;i.d{\times}2.6m\;high$) have been determined by the laser sheet technique. Axial solid holdup distribution of the CNT particles showed S curve with dense phase and dilute phase in bubbling fluidization regime. Heywood diameter and Feret diameter of the CNT agglomerates in the dilute phase of bubbling fluidized bed increased with increasing gas velocity. The CNT particle number in the agglomerates increased with increasing of gas velocity. Aspect ratio increased and circularity, roundness and solidity decreased with increasing of gas velocity. A possible mechanism of agglomerates formation was proposed based on the obtained information.

  • This paper describes the manufacturing process of tilting pad gas bearing with a diameter of 5 mm and a length of 0.5-1 mm for power MEMS (Micro Electomechanical Systems) applications. The bearing compacts with nanopowder feedstock were prepared by Ni-metal mold with 2-mold system using LIGA process. The effect of the manufacturing conditions on sintering properties of nanopowder gas bearing was investigated. In this work, Fe-45 wt%Ni nanopowder with an average diameter of 30-50 nm size was used as starting material. After mixing the nanopowder and the wax-based binders, the amount of powder was controlled to obtain the certain mixing ratio. The nanopowder bearing compacts were sintered with 1-2 hr holding time under hydrogen atmospheres and under temperatures of $600^{\circ}C$ to $1,000^{\circ}C$. Finally, the critical batch of mixed powder system was found to be 70% particle fraction in total volume. The maximum density of the sintered bearing specimen was about 94% of theoretical density.
