  • Korean traditional mask play was done at outdoor to let spectators join the play and take mask at performance and to have disadvantage of poor transfer of dialog to the spectators. Performers transferred dialog directly and/or indirectly by using visual costume, and Tongyeong Ogwangdae with many dialogue expressions concerning the costume made use of proper intention to help spectators understand. In this study, the author watched performance of Tongyeong Ogwangdae to collect and investigate not only image material but also photograph material and to classify intention of the costume into three: First, contents of the dialog were intended to make shape. The costumes of Hongbaek Yangban, Meoktal Yangban and Jorijung of the 2nd section gave spectators contents of the play, and the costume of Halmi Yangban of Nochangtal of the 4th section described dialog of Halmi. Second, dialog had connotative metaphor. The costume of Yeongno of Yeongnotal of the 3rd section symbolized an unfinished dragon, while that of Halmi of Nongchangtal of the 4th section did sacred of Halmi. And, Nongchagtal Ai's costume of the 4th section prayed for value of Ai, richness of the life and fecundity. Third, conflict between characters was intended by indirect media. The costume of Maltukee of metaphor mask of the 2nd section became base of the assertion supporting that Maltukee had better birth history than Yangban had, and the costume of Yeongnoyangban of Yeongnotal of the 3rd section produced conflict at disclosure of identity.

  • This study aims at developing dialog system to improve the quality of life of the elderly with a dementia. The proposed system mainly consists of three modules including speech recognition, automatic search of the time-sorted dialog database, and agreeable responses with the recorded voices of caregivers. For the first step, the dialog that dementia patients often utter at a nursing home is first investigated. Next, the system is organized to recognize the utterances in order to meet their requests or demands. The system is then responded with recorded voices of professional caregivers. For evaluation of the system, the comparison study was carried out when the system was introduced or not, respectively. The occupational therapists then evaluated a male subjects reaction to the system by photographing his behaviors. The evaluation results showed that the dialog system was more responsive in catering to the needs of dementia patient than professional caregivers. Moreover, the proposed system led the patient to talk more than caregivers did in mutual communication.

  • VoiceXML is new markup language which is designed for web resource navigation via voice based on XML. An application using VoiceXML is classified into mutual-controlled and machine-controlled form dialog structure. Such dialog structures can't construct service which provide free navigation of web resource by user because a scenario is decided by application developer. In this paper, we propose VoiceXML application structure using user-controlled form dialog system which decide service scenario according to user's intention. The proposed application automatically detects recognition candidates from requested information by user, and then system uses recognition candidate as voice-anchor. Also, system connects each voice-anchor with new voice-node. An example of proposed system, we implement news service with IT term dictionary, and we confirm detection and registration of voice-anchor and make an estimate of hit rate about measurement of an successive offer from information according to user's intention and response speed. As the experiment result, we confirmed possibility which is more freely navigation of web resource than existing VoiceXML form dialog systems.

  • A dialog system becomes a new way of communication between human and computer. The dialog system takes human voice as an input, and gives a proper response in voice or perform an action. Although there are several well-known products of dialog system (e.g., Amazon Echo, Naver Wave), they commonly suffer from a problem of out-of-domain utterances. If it poorly detects out-of-domain utterances, then it will significantly harm the user satisfactory. There have been some studies aimed at solving this problem, but it is still necessary to study about this intensively. In this paper, we give an overview of the previous studies of out-of-domain detection in terms of three point of view: dataset, feature, and method. As there were relatively smaller studies of this topic due to the lack of datasets, we believe that the most important next research step is to construct and share a large dataset for dialog system, and thereafter try state-of-the-art techniques upon the dataset.

  • With improvement of speech recognition and natural language processing, dialog systems are recently adapted to various service domains. It became possible to get desirable services by conversation through the dialog system, but it is still necessary to improve separate modules, such as domain detection, intention detection, named entity recognition, and out-of-domain detection, in order to achieve stable service offer. When it misclassifies an in-domain sentence of conversation as out-of-domain, it will result in poor customer satisfaction and finally lost business. As there have been relatively small number of studies related to the out-of-domain detection, in this paper, we introduce a new method using a hierarchical Dirichlet process and demonstrate the effectiveness of it by experimental results on Korean dataset.

  • This study proposes a deep neural network model based on an encoder-decoder structure for visual dialogs. Ongoing linguistic understanding of the dialog history and context is important to generate correct answers to questions in visual dialogs followed by questions and answers regarding images. Nevertheless, in many cases, a visual understanding that can identify scenes or object attributes contained in images is beneficial. Hence, in the proposed model, by employing a separate person detector and an attribute recognizer in addition to visual features extracted from the entire input image at the encoding stage using a convolutional neural network, we emphasize attributes, such as gender, age, and dress concept of the people in the corresponding image and use them to generate answers. The results of the experiments conducted using VisDial v0.9, a large benchmark dataset, confirmed that the proposed model performed well.

  • This paper describes our recent work for developing a baseline platform for Korean spoken dialog recognition. In our work, We have collected about 65 hour speech corpus with auditory transcriptions. Linguistic information on various levels such as mophology, syntax, semantics, and discourse is attached to the speech database by using automatic or semi-automatic tools for tagging linguistic information.

  • This paper focuses on the use of the virtual dialog system whose aim is to build more convenient living environments. In order to realize this, the main emphasis of the paper lies on the description of the multimedia signal processing on the basis of the technologies such as speech recognition, speech synthesis, video, or sensor signal processing. For essential modules of the dialog system, we incorporated the real-time speech recognizer based on HM-Net(Hidden Markov Network) as well as speech synthesis into the overall system. In addition, we adopted the real-time motion detector based on the changes of brightness in pixels, as well as the touch sensor that was used to start system. In experimental evaluation, the results showed that the proposed system was relatively easy to use for controlling electric appliances while sitting in a sofa, even though the performance of the system was not better than the simulation results owing to the noisy environments.

  • This study outlines a small-sized dialog style ETRI Korean TTS system which applies a HMM based speech synthesis techniques. In order to build the VoiceFont, dialog-style 500 sentences were used in training HMM. And the context information about phonemes, syllables, words, phrases and sentence were extracted fully automatically to build context-dependent HMM. In training the acoustic model, acoustic features such as Mel-cepstrums, logF0 and its delta, delta-delta were used. The size of the VoiceFont which was built through the training is 0.93Mb. The developed HMM-based TTS system were installed on the ARM720T processor which operates 60MHz clocks/second. To reduce computation time, the MLSA inverse filtering module is implemented with Assembly language. The speed of the fully implemented system is the 1.73 times faster than real time.
