  • The quality of the effluent from an activated sludge aeration tank can deteriorate when the substrate removal rate decreases due to an abrupt reduction in the DO concentration, which is affected by such operating conditions as the loading rate, temperature, wastewater composition, and so on. In this research, a DO control system that includes a PI (proportional-integral) controller/Hiraoka controller was developed and applied to a pilot-scale activated sludge process, then its acceptability was estimated. The applicability of the respiration rate to DO control was also estimated. The respiration rate indicated a variety of input organic loading rates, which is the main disturbance to the DO concentration in an aeration tank. When the influent concentration incrementally decreased and increased between CODcr 1,000 mg/l and 100 mg/l, the control system with a PI controller exhibited a good llperformance-the average DO concentrations were 2.00$\pm$0.14 mg/l and 1.88$\pm$0.15 mg/l (set value was 2.0 mg/l), respectively, and the settling time was just 10 minites. When the control system was operated for 4 days, the DO concentration was 1.99$\pm$0.18 mg/l and 32.6% of the air flowrate was saved. However, the fluctuations in the respiration rates and air flowrates were severe, which could be harmful to the stability of the biomass and mechanical stability of the blower. A possible approach to solve this problem may be the simultaneous control of the loading rate and DO concentration.

  • Field experiment was performed from August 1996 to January 1998 to examine the applicability of constructed wetland system for wastewater treatment in rural area. The pilot plant was installed in Kon-Kuk University and the school building septic tank effluent was used as an influent to the treatment basin. Hydraulic loading rate was about 0.1 6$0.16^3/m^2$ day and theoretical detention time in the system was 1.38 days. The treatment basin was composed of sand and reed. The influent DO concentration was low and many cases close to zero, but effluent concentration was higher than the influent which implies that oxygen was supplied naturally. The average concentration of influent BOD was 126mg/L, and with average removal rate of 69 % the average effluent concentration was 4Omg/L which satisfied the effluent water quality standard for the system of interest. The average influent concentration of COD was 2Olmg/L and average effluent concentration was 75mg/L with average removal rate of 60%. The performance of BOD and COD tends to deteriorate in the low temperature, and appropriate action needs to be taken during the cold winter time for stable operation. The average influent concentration of SS was 5Omg/L, and effluent was 1 1mg/L with average removal rate of 76% which satisfied the effluent water quality standard for the system of interest. The results for the regulated components, SOD and SS, from the experiment showed that constructed wetland system can meet the effluent water quality standards. The average influent concentration of total phosphorus was 25.6mg/L and average effluent concentration was 7.8mg/L with average removal rate of 63%. Not like the performance of the above components, average nitrogen removal rate was only 11.2% which is not satisfactory. Although, nitrogen is not regulated at this moment, it can cause many environmental problems including eutrophication. Therefore, nitrogen removal efficiency should be improved for actual application. From the result of the field experiment, constructed wetland system was thought to be an appropriate alternative for wastewater treatment in rural area.

  • During the continuous casting of boron-bearing steel, the corner cracks on the slab are formed by deformation with low strain rate and rapid cooling at the unbending temperature within the range of 800- $1000^{\circ}C$. Especially, the rapid cooling in the corner of slab during the continuous casting leads to as corner cracking. Therefore, in this study, the hot tensile tests applied to the different cooling rates were taken into account in order to study the effect of cooling rate on the hot ductility of boron-bearing steel. The results revealed that increasing cooling rate deteriorate the hot ductility of boron- bearing steel. Rapid decreasing of the hot ductility is caused by formation of a film-like ferrite and precipitate at the austenite grain boundaries. The morphology of the precipitates in the boron-bearing steel was monitored by PTA (Particle Tracking Autoradiography) and TEM, we observed MnS and BN compound and their morphology was quite different depending on the cooling rates. When the cooling rate is increased, rodshape MnS and BN precipitates can be formed along the austenite grain boundaries. It can cause that weakening the boundary region and decreasing the hot ductility of boron-bearing steel.

  • In recent years, the average life span of people in advanced countries has increased. Conwequently, the number of middle-aged and old workers who have the will to work has increased. On the other hand, the declining birth rate has decreased the number of young workers. However, because many enterprises in advanced countries have extended their mandatory retirement age from 55 to 60 years, labor accidents involving aged workers are on the increase. As a result, the need for a method to evaluate the work skills of middle-age and old workers has become urgent. To explore one such method, this study investigated the relationship between aging and manual dexterity. Dexterity was found to deteriorate with age, but with large variability from individual to individual. The parameters of dexterity used in this experiment were found to be reliable.

  • Flush inlet, which has been chosen for modem air vehicles to take advantage of structure compactness and small RCS, gives rise to some aerodynamic problems such as flow separation and distortion due to vortices which deteriorate the performance of both inlet and engine. In this study, pressure recoveries at inlet exit plane were evaluated through numerical analyses of 3D turbulent flow for various inlet shapes and flight conditions. Inlet shape was controlled by changing ramp angle and width of throat, and effects of mass flow rate and angle of attack were investigated.

  • Due to the recent advances in Phage-Change Memory (PCM) technologies, a new memory hierarchy of computer systems with PCM is expected to appear. In this paper, we present a new page replacement policy that adopts PCM as a high speed swap device. As PCM has limited write endurance, our goal is to minimize the amount of data written to PCM. To do so, we defer the eviction of dirty pages in proportion to their dirtiness. However, excessive preservation of dirty pages in memory may deteriorate the page fault rate, especially when the memory capacity is not enough to accommodate full working-set pages. Thus, our policy monitors the current working-set size of the system, and controls the deferring level of dirty pages not to degrade the system performances. Simulation experiments show that the proposed policy reduces the write traffic to PCM by 160% without performance degradations.

  • The purpose of this paper is to provide the fundamental data which can be used for the design of pole transformers. For the purpose, electrical characteristics of aged mineral oil and silicone oil were analyzed by comparing with the results of virgin ones. For the experiment, an oil bath which can keep constant temperature was constructed to thermally deteriorate the specimens. And transformer materials were put together in the bath according to the their ratio in weight in the pole transformer. And the parameters such as relative permittivety, tan$\delta$ and specific resistance were measured. As a results, the permittivity of silicone oil was higher than that of mineral oil, and its decreasing rate with temperature was also higher. In addition, it was found that tan$\delta$ and specific resistance of virgin and aged oil began to differ at similar temperature.

  • Slopping phenomena deteriorate the productivity and the stability of operation in oxygen converter process. To predict and prevent that, it needs reliable perception of the internal state of the oxygen converter chamber. Equipment was developed to measure the dynamic and static behavior of the oxygen-blowing lance 3-dimensionally and the measured signal is analyzed in relation to slopping phenomena. It was found that the behavior of the lance is strongly correlated to the change of slag foam height and the instability of molten steel behavior. So slopping phenomena can be predicted by simultaneously analyzing the measured behavior of the lance and the control factors such as the flow rate of oxygen and the height of lance.
