  • We present the design of a radiometer in W-band which operates simultaneously with a single antenna configured FMCW radar. We choose a total power radiometer(TPR) which shares an antenna and a front-end with the radar for miniaturizing the system. We separate the radiometer signal from the radar signal using a diplexer in IF band. Because the radiometer has an unwanted transmitter section due to the common use of the MMW front-end with the radar, some additional noise signals caused by the transmitter degrade the sensitivity of the radiometer system. To compensate the degradation of sensitivity, we use matching circuits and a diode detector configured as the voltage doubler. Through some experiments, we have verified that the designed radiometer system has good performances in detecting metal targets tying at several hundred meters.

  • A fully integrated single ended IR-UWB receiver is implemented using 0.18 ${\mu}m$ CMOS technology. The UWB receiver adopts the non-coherent architecture, which simplifies the RF architecture and reduces power consumption. The receiver consists of single-ended 2-stage LNAs, S2D, envelope detector, VGA, and comparator. The measured results show that sensitivity is -80.8 dBm at 1 Mbps and BER of $10^{-3}$. The receiver uses no external balun and the chip size is only $1.8{\times}0.9$ mm. The consumed current is very low with 13 mA at 1.8 V supply and the energy per bit performance is 23.4 nJ/bit.

  • We have designed a millimeter-wave passive imaging sensor with multi-horn antenna array. Six horn array antenna is suggested that it is integrated into one housing, and this antenna is effectively configurated m space to assemble with LNA of WR-10 structure. Antenna is designed to have the peak gain of 17.5dBi at the center frequency of 94GHz, and the return loss of less than -25dB in W-band, and the small aperture size of $6mm{\times}9mm$ for antenna configuration with high resolution. LNA is designed to have total gain of more than 55dB and noise figure of less than 5dB for good sensitivity. We made a detector for DC output translation of millimeter-wave signal with zero bias Schottky diode. It is shown that good sensitivity of more than 500mV/mW.

  • Polycrystalline mercuric iodide $HgI_2$) films are being developed as a new detector technology for digital x-ray imaging. The $HgI_2$ is generally vacuum deposited by physical vapor deposition (PVD) process. But the PVD thick deposition has been caused any instability in the biasing due to any defects or cracks. In this work we present a new particle-in-binder (PIB) methodologies used for the $HgI_2$ thick films. These growth techniques can be easily extended to produce much larger film areas. This paper, for the first time, presents results and comparison of polycrystalline $HgI_2$ films derived by various PIB methods. We investigated the structural and morphological properties of the films using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis. The films were characterized with respect to their electrical properties and in response to x-ray photons. Physical and electrical results were also compared between conventional polycrystalline PVD and our detectors. Leakage current as low as $350\;pA/cm^2$ at the bias voltage of ~ 200 V has been observed. And high sensitivity and good linearity in the response to x-rays was obtained in the film derived by PIB sedimentation method. Our future efforts will concentrate on optimization of film growth techniques for uniform large area deposition on image readout arrays.

  • This study conducted chemical and physical hazard analysis on the acidity, peroxide value, color removal, and limit criteria of metal detector of roasted laver. The Hunter color L- and a-value of roasted laver was higher than the control, and the b-value was higher at $400^{\circ}C$. The limit criteria establish by metal detector was determined to a sensitivity of 60 because it detected 100% in a sensitivity of 60 to Fe and Sus. The acidity and peroxide values increased with increasing temperature. These results confirmed that roasted laver is safe when roasted to $300^{\circ}C$ for 5 seconds.

  • A PET-MR system is particularly useful in diagnosing brain diseases. We have developed a prototype positron emission tomography (PET) system which can be inserted into the bore of a whole-body magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) system that enables us to obtain PET and MRI images simultaneously with a reduced cost. Silicon photomultipliers (SiPM) are appropriated as a PET detector at PET/MR system because detectors have a high gain and are insensitive to magnetic fields. Despite of its improved performance compared to that of PMT-based detectors, there is a problem of the photo-peak channel shift which is due to the increase of the temperature inside the ring detector. This problem will occur decreasing sensitivity of the PET and image distortion. In this paper, I quantitative analyze parameters of the KAIST SiPM depending on temperature by experiments. And I designed cooling methods in consideration of the degradation of sensors for correction of the temperature in the PET gantry. According to this research, we expect that distortive images and degradation of the sensitivity will not be occurred with using the above idea to reduce heat even if the PET system operates for a long time.

  • Currently, the measurement of RF parameters for a base station in operation is typically limited to easily measured forward path items. In this paper, the forward monitoring ports of base stations are used to measure the reverse RF performance. The system has been implemented and effectiveness has been proven on an operating base station. The receiver sensitivity is measured using an internal CDMA modem which is used to monitor the output power based on closed loop power control when the modem is connected to the base station via a voice call. In order to improve accuracy, in addition to the modem Tx adjust(TxAdj) parameter, the detector's actual measurement is used. For accurate receiver sensitivity, the measurement should be made when there is no traffic which is not possible on an operating base station. Therefore, pilot channel chip energy to received signal power spectral density ratio$(E_c/I_o)$ compensation method is used to offset the receiver sensitivity degradation with voice traffic increase.

  • We evaluate the degradation of receiver sensitivity induced by direct and indirect exposure to solar irradiance in free-space optical communication systems. For this purpose, we calculate the variances of numerous noise components arising from solar irradiance, and then estimate the receiver sensitivity penalties for intensity-modulation/direct-detection and coherent systems. The results show that the penalties are less than 1.3 dB when indirect sunlight impinges on the detector, regardless of the system. However, the sensitivity penalties are estimated to be larger than 30 dB when the sunlight is directly incident upon the receiver. These penalties are barely reduced if we insert an optical polarizer, or if we adjust the bandwidth of an optical filter at the receiver to be as narrow as the signal's bandwidth.

  • The purpose of this paper is to analyze the characteristics of Silicon Photomultiplier (SiPM) for the realization of high-sensitivity radiation detection in portable detectors. Portable X-ray detectors offer the advantage of quickly accessing the patient's location and obtaining real-time images, allowing physicians to perform rapid diagnoses. However, this mobility comes with challenges in achieving accurate radiation detection. In existing detectors, SiPM is used for a simple purpose of detecting X-ray triggers. To verify the feasibility of high-sensitivity X-ray detection through SiPM, seven types of SiPM sensors were compared and selected, and their characteristics were analyzed. The SiPM used in the final test demonstrated the ability to distinguish signals at the ultra-low radiation level of 10 nGy, and it was observed that the slope of the signal rise curve varies with the X-ray tube voltage. Utilizing the characteristics of SiPM, which exhibits changes in signal level and duration with X-ray dose, it appears possible to achieve high-sensitivity measurements for X-ray detection.

  • The characterization of detectors installed in space- and ground-based instruments is important to evaluate the system performance. We report the development of a detector performance test system for astronomical applications using the Andor iKon M CCD camera. The performance test system consists of a light source, monochromator, integrating sphere, and power meters. We adopted the Czerny-Tuner monochromator with three ruled gratings and one mirror, which covers a spectral range of 200-9,000 nm with a spectral resolution of ~1 nm in the visible region. Various detector characteristics, such as the quantum efficiency, sensitivity, and noise, can be measured in wide wavelength ranges from the visible to mid-infrared regions. We evaluated the Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute (KASI) detector performance test system by using the performance verification of the Andor iKon-M CCD camera. The test procedure includes measurements of the conversion gain ($2.86e^-/ADU$), full well capacity ($130K\;e^-$), nonlinearity, and pixel defects. We also estimated the read noise, dark current, and quantum efficiency as a function of the temperature. The lowest measured read noise is $12e^-$. The dark current at 223 K was determined to be $7e^-/s/pix$ and its doubling temperature is $5.3^{\circ}C{\pm}0.2^{\circ}C$ at an activation energy of 0.6 eV. The maximum quantum efficiency at 223 K was estimated to be $93%{\pm}2%$. We proved that the quantum efficiency is sensitive to the operating temperature. It varies up to 5 % in the visible region, while the variation increases to 30 % in the near-infrared region. Based on the comparison of our results with the test report by the vendor, we conclude that our performance test results are consistent with those from the vendor considering the test environment. We also confirmed that the KASI detector performance test system is reliable and our measurement method and analysis are accurate.
