DNA microarray becomes a major tool for the investigation of global gene expression in all aspects of cancer and biomedical research. DNA microarray experiment generates enormous amounts of data and they are meaningful only in the context of a detailed description of microarrays, biomaterials, and conditions under which they were generated. MicroArray Gene Expression Data (MGED) society has established microarray standard for structured management of these diverse and large amount data. MGED MAGE-OM (MicroArray Gene Expression Object Model) is an object oriented data model, which attempts to define standard objects for gene expression. To assess the relevance of DNA microarray analysis of cancer research it is required to combine clinical and genomics data. MAGE-OM, however, does not have an appropriate structure to describe clinical information of cancer. For systematic integration of gene expression and clinical data, we create a new model, Cancer Genomics Object Model.
Sandwich plate structure is widely used in various fields of industry due to its excellent strength and stiffness compared with weight. In this paper, the mechanical behavior of sandwich plate structure with honeycomb core considering buckling is investigated in detail. The focus of the analysis is to evaluate strength and stiffness of the plate structure with critical stress, natural frequency, and mode shapes. The results of this investigation are obtained from detailed finite element analysis for various parameters, such as length, height ratio, and thickness ratio of honeycomb core.
A finite element-based, integrated process model has been developed and applied to predict the detailed, three-dimensional aspects of the thermo-mechanical behavior occurring in the slab caster considering inclusion removal from molten steel by argon bubble flotation. Gas bubbles are simulated using the dispersion model calculating the volume fraction, and the bubble capture effect is included by a source term in the transport equation for particles. The process model is applied to the investigation of the effect of various process parameters on the inclusion removal in the molten steel.
A novel approach of microbiologically-enhanced crack remediation (MECR) has been initiated and evaluated in this report. Under the laboratory conditions, Bacillus pasteurii was used to induce $CaCO_3$ precipitation as the microbial urease hydrolyzes urea to produce ammonia and carbon dioxide. The ammonia released in surroundings subsequently increases pH, leading to accumulation of insoluble $CaCO_3$. Scanning electron micrography (SEM) and x-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses evidenced the direct involvement of microorganisms in $CaCO_3$ precipitation. In biochemical studies, the primary roles of microorganisms and microbial urease were defined. Furthermore, the role of urease in $CaCO_3$ precipitation was characterized utilizing recombinant Escherichia coli that encoded B. pasteurii urease genes in a plasmid. Microorganisms immobilized in polyurethane (PU) polymer were applied to remediate concrete cracks. Although microbiologically- induced calcite precipitation enhanced neither the tensile strength nor the modulus of elasticity of the PU polymer, cement mortar whose crack was remediated with the cemaden polymer showed a significant increase in compressive strength. Through detailed investigation, MECR showed an excellent potential in cementing cracks in granite, concrete, and beyond.
This paper addresses experimental results carried out to investigate the transmission of seat vibration to the head for Korean. Vertical seat vibration in the frequency range of 0.5-30 Hz was applied to a seated Korean male subject. To examine the intra-variable effects on transmissibility, five different postures and three different vibration excitation levels were considered. The applied acceleration and head accelerations of the seated subject were measured simultaneously by using a 6-axes bite-bar. Detailed experimental results of measured transmissibilities are illustrated for each posture and/or vibration excitation level, and they were compared to an International Standard. They are found to allow the identification of dynamic characteristics of Korean seated body for various reat vibration environments. Furthermore, they are expected to be very useful in designing new seats for automotive and railway vehicles and in improving their vibration ride quality.
Ground water stored in the alluvium and the rocks provides the vase flow of the streams and can be withdraw from wells and infiltration galleries. And it is also recharge naturallyby precipitation. The amount of ground water in the four major basins it is estimated to be about 137,000 million cubiv meters(Table1), while nationwide ground water storage to be about 232,000 million cubic meters. The estimation of storage volume has been made on the basis of assumed thickness of the saturated zone of the different rocks and assumed porosities of those rocks. The values of the porosity of alluvium and saprolite were assumed to be 25% and 40% respectivvely which are based on tests made of similar materials in Georgia, U.S. The volume of water in storage is believed to be a conservative estimate. Detailed geologic and hydrologic investigation should be made where and when water resources are needed.
Previous reports have shown that Near Infrared Spectroscopy (NIRS) can be used to assess physical and chemical properties of flax fibre and fabric quality. Currently, spinners assess yarn quality mainly based on strength and regularity measurements. There two key characteristics are influenced by quality of raw fibres used, especially the degree of rotting and strength. The aim of this investigation was to evaluate the use of NIRS for assessing quality of weft grade yarn available on the commercial market. In order to develop the NIR calibrations, a range of samples representing poor, medium and good quality weft yarn samples was included in the calibration and validation sample sets. The samples were analysed for physical and chemical parameters including caustic weight loss, fibre fractions, lipid, ash and minerals. A detailed protocol for assessing yarn quality has been developed to maximize the accuracy of the reflectance spectra. The development of partial least squares regression models and validation of the calibration equations using blind samples will be presented and discussed.
LMTT (Linear Motor-based Transfer Technology) is horizontal transfer system in the maritime container terminal for the port automation. The system is driven by PMLSM (Permanent Magnetic Linear Synchronous Motor) that is consists of stator modules on the rail and shuttle car. This paper investigates the effect of the drop height of container on impact reaction force of the Impact Absorber (IA) in shuttle car for LMTT. The results of this investigation are obtained from detailed finite element analysis for various parameters, such as the spring coefficient, the drop height of container.
This paper deals with an investigation and evaluation of the performance of a state observer based Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (PMSM) drive controlled by PI (Proportional Integral), PID (Proportional Integral and Derivative), SMC (sliding mode control), ANN (Artificial neural network) and FLC (Fuzzy logic) speed controllers. A detailed study of the steady state and dynamic performance of estimated speed and angle is given to demonstrate the capability of the controllers.
This study investigates Japanese-made Chinese Characters in JIS X 0212-1990(Code of the Su n.0, pplementary Japanese Graphic Character Set for Information Interchange). As a results of detailed investigation, it is found that the number of Japanese-made Chinese Characters in su n.0, pplementary set reaches to 69 characters. Among them, 29 characters are not listed even in the best known chinese character dictionary [대한화사전]. 30 characters are found in the chinese character dictionaries published in Korea, while 39 characters are not found in any of those dictionaries. The distinctive characteristic of Japanese-made Chinese characters is that those chinese characters are made in order to name the things, such as fishes, birds, trees, which do not have Chinese-made Chinese Characters.
