The defects evaluation of the interior and the surface would be considered as vital characteristics in predicting the total life span of the steel structure. More importantly, the understandings in the interior composite of welding zone and the notifications in the presence, the formation, and the positioning of the non-metallic inclusion are necessary as well, since there were signs of relatively high defect frequency presented in the welding zone. The ultrasonic testing is a highly recommended technique chosen from among other techniques because of variety of advantages in conducting the non-destructive testing for the welding zone. However, the ultrasonic testing had technical disadvantages referred as followings; the problems due to the couplant between the PZT and the specimen, the formations that were miniature and complex, the moving subject, and the high temperature surrounding the specimen. This research was conducted to resolve the technical disadvantages of the contact ultrasonic testing by studying the non-contact ultrasonic testing where the ultrasonic waves were transferred by the laser, and revealing the specimen defects at its interior part and its surface part. The ultimate goal of this research was to develop a non-destructive evaluation applying the laser manipulated ultrasonic method for the steel structure.

Measuring defects on the inside and on the surface of a steel structure is very important technology in order to predict the life span of the structure. In particular, a place with a high probability that it may contain defects is a welded part and it is very important to check defects in the part, absence/presence of non-uniform substances, its shape, and the location. Many non-destructive tests can be applied, but the ultrasonic flow detection test is widely used with some advantages. The ultrasonic flow detection test, however, cannot be applied when there is a problem by a contact medium between PZT and a specimen, in case of a small and complicated shape or a moving object or when the specimen is hot. In this study, to solve the problems of the contact ultrasonic flow detection test, the non-contact ultrasonic flow detection test for sending/receiving ultrasonic waves using lasers was described. I intended to develop a non-destructive detection system applying the laser application ultrasonic test to a steel structure by detecting the defects inside of and on the surface of the specimen.

Purpose: Reliability is the most important factor to detect defects as wind turbines are deployed in large blades. The methods of detecting defects are various, such as non-destructive inspection and thermal imaging inspection. We propose the phased array ultrasonic testing method of non-destructive testing. Methods: We propose the active pressure mechanism for wind power blade. The phase array ultrasonic inspection method is used for fault detection inner blade surface. Controlled pressure of mechanism with respect to z-axis is important for guarantee the result of phase array ultrasonic inspection. The model based control and proposed mechanism are utilized for overall system stability and effectiveness of system. Result: The result of proposed pressure mechanism B is more stable than A. Convergence speed is also faster than A. Conclusion: We confirmed the performance of the proposed constant pressure mechanism through experiments. Non-destructive testing was applied to the specimen to confirm the reliability of detecting defects.
This paper reports a method to evaluate the residual strength of insect-damaged radiata pine lumber, such as the screw withdrawal strength as a semi-destructive method and a compression parallel to the grain test to assess the density changes after exposure to outdoor conditions. The screw withdrawal strength test was used as a semi-destructive method to estimate the residual density of decayed lumber. A compression parallel to the grain test was applied to evaluate the residual density. Three variables, such as the screw withdrawal strength, compression parallel to the grain, and residual density, were analyzed statistically to evaluate their relationships. The relationship between the residual density and screw withdrawal strength showed a good correlation, in which the screw withdrawal strength decreased with decreasing density. The other relationship between the residual density and compression parallel to the grain was also positively correlated; the compression parallel to the grain strength decreased with decreasing density. Finally, the correlation between the three variables was statistically significant, and the mutual correlation coefficients showed a strong correlation between the three variables. Hence, these variables are closely correlated. The test results showed that the screw withdrawal strength could be used as a semi-destructive method for an in situ estimation of an existing wood structure. Moreover, the method might approximate the residual density and compression parallel to the grain if supplemented with additional data.
This paper reports the results of advanced data analysis involving artificial neural networks for the prediction of the unconfined compressive strength of granite using only two non-destructive test indexes. A data-independent site-independent unbiased database comprising 182 datasets from non-destructive tests reported in the literature was compiled and used to train and develop artificial neural networks for the prediction of the unconfined compressive strength of granite. The results show that the optimum artificial network developed in this research predicts the unconfined compressive strength of weak to very strong granites (20.3-198.15 MPa) with less than ±20% deviation from the experimental data for 70% of the specimen and significantly outperforms a number of available models available in the literature. The results also raise interesting questions with regards to the suitability of the Pearson correlation coefficient in assessing the prediction accuracy of models.
As pork consumption increases, rapid and accurate determination of porcine carcass grades at abattoirs has become important. Non-destructive, automated inspection methods have improved slaughter efficiency in abattoirs. Furthermore, the development of a calibration equation suitable for non-destructive inspection of domestic pig breeds may lead to rapid determination of pig carcass and more objective pork grading judgement. In order to increase the efficiency of pig slaughter, the correct estimation of the automated-method that can accommodate the existing pig carcass judgement should be made. In this study, the previously developed calibration equation was verified to confirm whether the estimated traits accord with the actual measured traits of pig carcass. A total of 1,069,019 pigs, to which the developed calibration equation, was applied were used in the study and the optimal estimated regression equation for actual measured two traits (backfat thickness and hot carcass weight) was proposed using the estimated traits. The accuracy of backfat thickness and hot carcass weight traits in the estimated regression models through stepwise regression analysis was 0.840 (R2) and 0.980 (R2), respectively. By comparing the actually measured traits with the estimated traits, we proposed optimal estimated regression equation for the two measured traits, which we expect will be a cornerstone for the Korean porcine carcass grading system.
Parrots have been threatened by global trade to meet their high demand as pets. Controlling parrot trade is essential because parrots play a vital role in the ecosystem. Accurate species identification is crucial for controlling parrot trade. Parrots have been traded as eggs due to their advantages of lower mortality rates and more accessible transport than live parrots. A molecular method is required to identify parrot eggs because it is difficult to perform identification using morphological features. In this study, DNAs were obtained from 43 unidentified parrot eggs using a non-destructive sampling method. Partial cytochrome b (CYTB) gene was then successfully amplified using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and sequenced. Sequences newly obtained in the present study were compared to those available in the GenBank by database searching. In addition, phylogenetic analysis was conducted to identify species using available sequences in GenBank along with sequences reported in previous studies. Finally, the 43 parrot eggs were successfully identified as seven species belonging to two families and seven genera. This non-destructive sampling method for obtaining DNA and molecular identification might help control the trade of parrot eggs and prevent their illegal trade.

This study aims to determine the characteristics of concrete as identified by Rebound Hammer and Ultrasonic Pulse Velocity (UPV) tests, focusing particularly on their efficacy in estimating compressive strength of concrete material. The study involved three concrete samples designed to achieve a target strength of 29 MPa, comprising normal concrete, instant concrete, and concrete with additives. These were cast into cube specimens measuring 150×150×150 mm. Compressive strength values were determined through both destructive and non-destructive testing on the cubic specimens. As a result, the non-destructive methods yielded varying outcomes for each correlation approach, influenced by the differing constituent materials in the tested concretes. However, normal concrete consistently showed the most reliable correlation, followed by concrete with additives, and lastly, instant concrete. The study found that combining Rebound Hammer and UPV tests enhances the prediction accuracy of compressive strength of concrete. This synergy was quantified through multivariate regression, considering UPV, rebound number, and actual compressive strength. The findings also suggest a more significant influence of the Rebound Hammer measurements on predicting compressive strength for BN and BA, whereas UPV and RN had a similar impact on predicting BI compressive strength.
Percentage that aggregate of materials that concrete composed about $70{\sim}80%$ of whole volume, therefore influence that quality of aggregate gets in concrete characteristics are very important. Schmidt hammer and ultra-sonic velocity method are commonly used for crushed sand concrete compressive strength test in a construction field. At present, various equations for prediction of strength are present, which have been used in a construction field. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the correlation between prediction strength by present equations and destructive strength to test specimen, and find out which is a suitable equation for the construction site, a strength test was carried out destructive test by means of core sampling and traditional test. The experimental parameters were concrete age, curing condition, and strength level. It is demonstrated that the correlation behavior of crushed sand concrete strength in this study good due to the perform analysis of correlation between core, destructive strength and non-destructive strength.
It is necessary to review the non-destructive indexes in order to estimate the bending strength performance of the domestic larch lumber. In this study, MOEs (modulus of elastic) the larch lumber (cross-section $89{\times}120mm$) were evaluated through non-destructive methods such as the ultra-sonic method, longitudinal vibration method, and non-destructive bending method. The non-destructive measurement method which best represented the static MOE was determined and applied as the MOR(modulus of rupture) estimation index. The MOE that was measured through the longitudinal vibration method showed the highest correlation with the static MOE. The MOR was highly related to the static MOE. Therefore, the non-destruction MOE measured through the longitudinal vibration method was used to estimate the MOR of the lumber.
