  • Mesoporous alumina was synthesized using bayberry tannin (BT) as template. This novel synthesis strategy was based on a precipitation method associated with aluminum nitrate as the source of aluminum in an aqueous system. $N_2$ adsorption/desorption, XRD, SEM and TEM were used to characterize the as-prepared mesoporous alumina. The results showed that the mesoporous alumina possessed crystalline pore wall, high specific surface area, narrow pore distribution and excellent thermal stability. Moreover, the surface area and pore size of the mesoporous alumina can be tuned by changing the experimental parameters. Further, the mesoporous alumina was investigated as the support of palladium catalyst ($Pd-Al_2O_3{^*}$) for the hydrogenation of propenyl, styrene and linoleic acid. For comparison, the reference catalyst ($Pd-Al_2O_3$) prepared without barberry tannin was also employed for the catalytic hydrogenation. The experimental results showed that $Pd-Al_2O_3{^*}$ exhibited the superior catalytic performance than $Pd-Al_2O_3$ for all the investigated substrates, especially for the hydrogenation of linoleic acid with larger molecular.

  • A three-way catalyst system of a natural gas vehicle (NGV) has characteristics of higher fuel consumption and higher thermal load than a lean-bum catalyst system. To meet stringent emission standards in the future, NGV with the lean-bum engine may need a catalyst system to reduce the amounts of HC, CO and NOx emission, although natural gas system has low emission characteristics. We conducted experiments to evaluate the conversion efficiency of the NOx reduction catalyst for the lean-burn natural gas engine. The NOx reduction catalysts were prepared with the ${\gamma}-Al_{2}O_3$ washcoat including Ba based on Pt, Pd and Rh precious metal. In the experiments, effective parameters were space velocity, spike duration of the rich condition, and the temperature of flowing model gas. From the results of the experiments, we found that the temperature for maximum NOx reduction was around $450^{\circ}C$, and the space velocity for optimum NOx reduction was around $30,000\;h^{-1}$ And we developed an evaluation model of the NOx reduction catalyst to evaluate the conversion performance of each other catalysts.

  • Sliced and whole root of rehmannia were dehydrated in a laboratory dryer at 40, 60, 80, and $100^{\circ}C$ to evaluate the kinetic parameters for dehydration of rehmannia. The drying curves of both samples were characterized by a falling-rate drying period only. Sliced rehmannia dried 1.1 to 3.1 times faster than whole root of rehmannia depending on drying temperature. Equilibrium moisture content (EMC) of rehmannia samples at the drying temperature tested were 0.069-0.078 g water/g dry solid, which was coincided with the monolayer moisture content (0.06 and 0.07 g water/g dry solid) evaluated from desorption isotherms using GAB (Guggenheim-Anderson-de Boer) model. A logarithmic model for thin layer drying was applied to evaluate the drying time to reach EMC ($t_{EMC}$) and drying constant (k). The effect of temperature on $1/t_{EMC}$ and k was described by the Arrhenius model with activation energy values of 32.56 and 47.14 kJ/mol determined using the former parameter, and 34.27 and 38.26 kJ/mol determined using the latter parameter for sliced and whole root of rehmannia, respectively.

  • This research was carried out to evaluate the effect of recycled wastewater and surfactant above CMC(critical micelle concentration) on the removal rate of PAHs in bench-scale slurry bioreactor. Kinetic parameters based on zero order and first order kinetic models were estimated. The first order model was able to describe the removal of phenanthrene and pyrene with high correlation coefficients. Addition of recycled wastewater could enhance the removal rates of phenanthrene and pyrene. Addition of surfactant above CMC could enhance desorption rate and removal rate of phenanthrene and pyrene.

  • Hydrogen-sensing behaviors of Pd- and Pt-SiC Schottky diodes, fabricated on the same SiC substrate, have been systematically compared and analyzed as a function of hydrogen concentration and temperature by I-V and$\DeltaI-t$ methods under steady-state and transient conditions. The effects of hydrogen adsorption on the device parameters such as the barrier height are investigated. The significant differences in their hydrogen sensing characteristics have been examined in terms of sensitivity limit, linearity of response, response rate, and response time. For the investigated temperature range, Pd-SiC Schottky diode shows better performance for H2 detection than Pt-SiC Schottky diode under the same testing conditions. The physical and chemical mechanisms responsible for hydrogen detection are discussed. Analysis of the steady-state reaction kinetics using I-V method confirmed that the atomistic hydrogen process is responsible for the barrier height change in the diodes.

  • The effects of pH of solution on structural, electrical, and optical properties of CdS thin films prepared by solution growth method were investigated. With increasing pH of the solution, both crystallinity and transmittance of CdS thin film were deteriorated due to impurities and CdS particles, which were produced by homogeneous nucleation and adsorbed on the surface of CdS thin films. The films were strongly adherent to substrates and has low resistivity of 10~$10^2{\omega}cm$ regrardless of deposition conditions. After annealing at 30$0^{\circ}C$ in Ar atmosphere, the resistivity decreased due to desorption of impurity ions as well as the formation of S vacancies, but after annealing above 35$0^{\circ}C$ it increased by an agglomeration of S vacancies. After annealing in air atmosphere, the film resistivity increased because of the formation of oxide particle in grain boundaries.

  • In this study, we carried out an investigation of the etch characteristics of silicon (Si) film, and the selectivity of Si to $SiO_2$ in $SF_6/O_2$ plasma. The etch rate of the Si film was decreased on adding $O_2$ gas, and the selectivity of Si to $SiO_2$ was increased, on adding $O_2$ gas to the $SF_6$ plasma. The optical condition of the Si film with this work was 1,350 nm/min, at a gas mixing ratio of $SF_6/O_2$ (=130:30 sccm). At the same time, the etch rate was measured as functions of the various etching parameters. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis showed the efficient destruction of oxide bonds by ion bombardment, as well as the accumulation of high volatile reaction products on the etched surface. Field emission auger electron spectroscopy analysis was used to examine the efficiency of the ion-stimulated desorption of the reaction products.

  • Nowadays, adsorption chillers have been receiving considerable attention, as they are energy saving and environmentally benign systems. A fin tube type heat exchanger in which adsorption/desorption takes place is required with more compact size. The adsorption chiller is expected to have high energy efficiency in utilizing the waste heat exhausted from a process. The objectives of this paper are to scrutinize the effect of design parameters on the adsorption performance, especially the fin pitch of the fin tube, and to develop an optimal design fin tube heat exchanger in a silica gel/water adsorption chiller. From the numerical results, the fin pitch of 2.5 mm shows the highest adsorption rate, compared to other fin pitches, such as 5 mm, 7.5 mm and 10mm. Also, the adsorption rate is affected by the cooling water and hot water temperature.

  • Effect of a nonionic surfactant, Tween 20 on the adsorption and kinetic mechanism for the hydrolysis of a microcrystalline cellulose, Avicel PH 101, by endoglucanase Ⅰ (Endo Ⅰ) and exoglucanase Ⅱ (Exo Ⅱ) isolated from Trichoderma viride were studied. The Langmuir isotherm parameters, amount of maximum adsorption (Amax) and adsorption equilibrium constant (Kad) for the adsorption, were obtained in the presence and the absence of nonionic surfactant. On the addition of Tween 20, the Kad and Amax values of Exo Ⅱ were decreased, while those of Endo Ⅰ were not affected. These indicate that the adsorption affinity of Exo Ⅱ on the cellulose is weakened by nonionic surfactant, and the surfactant enhanced desorption of Exo Ⅱ from insoluble substrate. The enzymatic hydrolysis of the cellulose can be described by two parallel pseudo-first order reactions using the percentages of easily (Ca) and hardly (Cb) hydrolyzable cellulose in Avicel PH 101 and associated rate constants (ka and kb). The Ca value was increased by adding Tween 20 for all enzyme samples (Exo Ⅱ, Endo Ⅰ and their 1:1 mixture) implying that the low-ordered crystalline fraction in the cellulose may be partly dispersed by surfactant. The ka value was not affect by adding Tween 20 for all enzyme samples (Exo Ⅱ, Endo Ⅰ and their 1:1 mixture). The kb value of Exo Ⅱ was increased by adding Tween 20, while that of Endo Ⅰ was not affected. This suggests that the surfactant helps the Exo Ⅱ desorb from microcrystalline cellulose, and increase the hydrolysis rate. These results were show that the increase of hydrolysis of cellulose by the nonionic surfactant is due to both the activation of Exo Ⅱ and partial defibrillation of the cellulose.
