This paper presents an approach for evaluating directionality effects for both wind speeds and wind loads in hurricane-prone regions. The focus of this study is on directional wind loads on low-rise structures. Using event-based simulation, hurricane directionality effects are determined for an open-terrain condition at various locations in the southeastern United States. The wind speed (or wind load) directionality factor, defined as the ratio of the N-year mean recurrence interval (MRI) wind speed (or wind load) in each direction to the non-directional N-year MRI wind speed (or wind load), is less than one but increases toward unity with increasing MRI. Thus, the degree of conservatism that results from neglecting directionality effects decreases with increasing MRI. It may be desirable to account for local exposure effects (siting effects such as shielding, orientation, etc.) in design. To account for these effects in a directionality adjustment, the factor described above for open terrain would need to be transformed to other terrains/exposures. A "local" directionality factor, therefore, must effectively combine these two adjustments (event directionality and siting or local exposure directionality). By also considering the direction-specific aerodynamic coefficient, a direction-dependent wind load can be evaluated. While the data necessary to make predictions of directional wind loads may not routinely be available in the case of low-rise structures, the concept is discussed and illustrated in this paper.

This paper deals with LLC resonant converter for communication power supply. Generally, the load range of communication power is very wide. However, voltage conversion ratio of LLC converter is highly dependent of load condition. So, it is not easy to design of robust power supply along with the wide load condition. Especially, it is not possible to meet the required low voltage conversion ratio for low output voltage with high input voltage under the light load condition. To solve this problem, in this paper, a new duty control interlinked with operational frequency has been proposed. To prove the usefulness of the proposed control method, the simulation and experiments were carried out. The simulation and experimental results show the usefulness of the proposed control method.
This paper presents an investigation on seismic behavior of out-of-code Q690 circular high-strength concrete-filled thin-walled steel tubular (HCFTST) columns made up of high-strength (HS) steel tubes (yield strength $f_y{\geq}690MPa$). Eight Q690 circular HCFTST columns with various diameter-to-thickness (D/t) ratios, concrete cylinder compressive strengths ($f_c$) and axial compression ratios (n) were tested under the constant axial loading and reversed cyclic lateral loading. The obtained lateral load-displacement hysteretic curves, energy dissipation, skeleton curves and ductility, and stiffness degradation were analyzed in detail to reflect the influences of tested parameters. Subsequently, a simplified shear strength model was derived and validated by the test results. Finally, a finite element analysis (FEA) model incorporating a stress triaxiality dependent fracture criterion was established to simulate the seismic behavior. The systematic investigation indicates the following: compared to the D/t ratio and axial compression ratio, improving the concrete compressive strength (e.g., the HS thin-walled steel tube filled with HS concrete) had a slight influence on the ductility but an obvious enhancement of energy dissipation and peak load; the simplified shear strength model based on truss mechanism accurately predicted the shear-resisting capacity; and the established FEA model incorporating steel fracture criterion simulated well the seismic behavior (e.g., hysteretic curve, local buckling and fracture), which can be applied to the seismic analysis and design of Q690 circular HCFTST columns.

A general procedure to implement the sensitivity analysis of PSC flexural members is proposed based on the analytical calculation of the gradients of stresses and strains with respect to the 21 design variables in a closed format. The formulation covers the long term losses including concrete creep, shrinkage, and PS steel relaxation as well as load effects. The derived formulation is applied to the rectangular section PSC beam with prestressing and nonprestressing steels for the sensitivity analysis. The analytically calculated sensitivity results are compared with those numerically calculated.

In structural analysis of prestressed concrete continuous flexural mambers, secondary effects produced by tendon forces should be reasonably estimated. The secondary moment at service load stags is normally used for ultimate required moment caculation in strength design. This concept has to be reviewed when precise analysis is performed considering construction step, time dependent properties of concrete and tendon. An ultimate moment computation proposed, concept and structural behavior. The previously proposed procedure by other researcher and the proposed procedure are compared and reviewed for the currently constructed precast prestressed concrete bridge.

To provide model parameters for servo control system design, dynamic characteristics of a piezoelectric microactuator for hard disk drive(HDD) were investigated. At first frequency response characteristics was measured and a second order model was proposed. Here the amplitude dependent dynamic characteristics such as low frequency gain and damping ratio were studied. In addition, the load current and equivalent impedance of the piezoelectric actuator were measured by varying excitation voltage and frequency. At last, the super-harmonic resonance of the piezoelectric actuator was discussed.
Tower crane is a large construction equipment which is extremely tall for its section when it is erected, with its high slenderness ratio, and it has a heavy load by itself due to large lifting stuff to handle. In line with the construction projects in these days which increasingly tend to become higher, larger and complex, the stuff and height subject to lifting are also getting larger and higher, which has also increased the risk of disastrous accidents. A stable foundation design thus to deal with the increasing self load becomes more important. When a typhoon Maemi swept the nation in 2003, as many as 43 tower cranes fell down or collapsed, causing a severe damage to the people and the properties. Considering such fatal damages, a technical evaluation of the stability to prevent the safety accident with the tower crane must be very crucial. Tower cranes operation in domestic construction sites, in fact, have been simply dependent on personal experience and intuition of the engineers. Particularly when it comes to the foundation design, it mostly depends on manufacturer's recommendation. The study hence was intended to develop the fundamental measures for granting the objective stability, instead of following the individual's experience only. The simulation model recommended in the study is expected to make a good commitment to achieving an effective lifting work as well as preventing the safety accident.

This paper defines the modified effective membrane stiffness, bending stiffness considering the directionally dependent mechanical properties and mode shape function of a composite lattice rectangular plate, which is assumed to be a Kirchhoff-Love plate. It subsequently presents an approximate method of conducting a buckling analysis of the composite lattice rectangular plate with various boundary conditions under uniform compression using the Ritz method. This method considers the coupled buckling mode as well as the global and local buckling modes. The validity of the present method is verified by comparing the results of the finite element analysis. In addition, this paper performs a parametric analysis to investigate the effects of the design parameters on the critical load and buckling mode shape of the composite lattice rectangular plate based on the present method. The results allow a database to be obtained on the buckling characteristics of composite lattice rectangular plates. Consequently, it is concluded that the present method which facilitates the calculation of the critical load and buckling mode shape according to the design parameters as well as the parametric analysis are very useful not only because of their structural design but also because of the buckling analysis of composite lattice structures.
Reliability-based design limit states and associated partial load factors provide a consistent level of design safety across bridge types and members. However, limit states in the current AASHTO LRFD have not been developed explicitly for the situation encountered by integral abutment bridges (IABs) that have unique boundary conditions and loads with inherent uncertainties. Therefore, new reliability-based limit states for IABs considering the variability of the abutment support conditions and thermal loading must be developed to achieve IAB designs that achieve the same safety level as other bridge designs. Prestressed concrete girder bridges are considered in this study and are subjected to concrete time-dependent effects (creep and shrinkage), backfill pressure, temperature fluctuation and temperature gradient. Based on the previously established database for bridge loads and resistances, reliability analyses are performed. The IAB limit states proposed herein are intended to supplement current AASHTO LRFD limit states as specified in AASHTO LRFD Table 3.4.1-1.

Optimal design of functionally graded plates is investigated considering stress and critical temperature. Material properties are assumed to be temperature dependent and varied continuously in the thickness direction. The effective material properties are obtained by applying linear rule of mixtures. The 3-D finite element model is adopted using an 18-node solid element to analyze more accurately the variation of material properties and temperature field in the thickness direction. For stress analysis, the tensile stress ratio and compressive stress ratio of the structure under mechanical load are investigated. In the thermo-mechanical buckling analysis, temperature at each node is obtained by solving the steady-state heat transfer problem and Newton-Raphson method is used for material nonlinear analysis. Finally, the optimal design of FGM plates is studied for stress reduction and improving thermo-mechanical buckling behavior, simultaneously.
