  • This study selected and analyzed filter media that can be applied in non-point pollution reduction devices aimed at processing the source of pollution on site for road runoff that increases rapidly in rainfall-runoff in order to improve the water quality of urban areas. First, the factors that affect the quality of runoff caused by sources of non-point pollution include physical and social factors such as the usage of land around the area of water collection, type of pavement and movement of cars and people, as well as rainfall characteristics such as frequency, intensity, amount and duration of rainfall. Second, the purification tests of the filter media were processed for pH, BOD, COD and T-P, and the filter media showed to have initial purification effect at that items. However, the filter media showed to be very effective for the processing of SS, T-N, Zn and Cd from the beginning to the end. Third, for filter media, zeolite and vermiculite showed to be effective for processing SS, T-N, Zn and CD constantly, and composite filter media including zeolite showed to have strong processing effects. The authors conclude that this study can be applied to technical areas and policies aimed at reducing non-point pollution in urban areas and can also contribute to allowing eco-friendly management of rainfall as well as improvement of water quality.

  • When simulating the daily rainfall amount by existing Markov Chain model, it is general to simulate the rainfall occurrence and to estimate the rainfall amount randomly from the distribution which is similar to the daily rainfall distribution characteristic using Monte Carlo simulation. At this time, there is a limitation that the characteristics of rainfall intensity and distribution by time according to the rainfall duration are not reflected in the results. In this study, 1-day, 2-day, 3-day, 4-day rainfall event are classified, and the rainfall amount is estimated by rainfall duration. In other words, the distributions of the total amount of rainfall event by the duration are set using the Kernel Density Estimation (KDE), the daily rainfall in each day are estimated from the distribution of each duration. Total rainfall amount determined for each event are divided into each daily rainfall considering the type of daily distribution of the rainfall event which has most similar rainfall amount of the observed rainfall using the k-Nearest Neighbor algorithm (KNN). This study is to develop the limitation of the existing rainfall estimation method, and it is expected that this results can use for the future rainfall estimation and as the primary data in water resource design.

  • Rainfall-induced slope failures were simulated by seepage and stability analyses for actual slopes of weathered soils. After undisturbed sampling and testing on a specimen of unsaturated conditions, a seepage analysis was performed under actual rainfall and it was found that the pore water pressure increased at the boundary of soil and rock layers. The safety factor of slope stability decreased below 1.0 and the failure of actual slope could be simulated. Under design rainfall intensity, the seepage analysis could not include the effects of the antecedent rainfall and the rainfall duration. Due to these limitations, the safety factor of slope stability resulted in above 1.0, since the hydraulic head of soil layers had not be affected significantly. In the analysis of another slope failure, the parameters of unsaturated conditions were evaluated using artificial neural network (ANN). In the analysis of seepage, the boundary of soil and rock was saturated sufficiently and then the safety factor could be calculated below 1.0. It was found that the failure of actual slope can be simulated by ANN-based estimation.

  • This research was carried out for suggesting design criteria and procedure for maximizing flood control capacity by building flood control facilities like flood retention basin built in connection with existing facilities in order to cope with increased uncertainty due to factors such as urbanization and climate change. We suggested the procedure for the analysis under the various scenarios applicable for the cases of determining retention basin capacity as provision for the flood water level increase in main river channel or estimating flood water level reduction effect when retention basin capacity is given. Procedure for estimating design flood hydrograph at any duration using Intensity-Duration-Quantity (IDQ) originated from the existing IDF, and its application example were provided. Based on rainfall estimated by the IDQ analysis, it is possible to calculate an equivalent peak hydrographs under various scenarios, e.g. lower frequency hydrograph under same rainfall duration with water level higher than existing hydrograph, hydrograph with same peak and higher volume due to increased rainfall duration, hydrograph with higher peak and volume than existing hydrograph, etc.

  • The rational method is formed area, rainfall intensity and runoff coefficient that is representation of land use or surface type. A runoff coefficient is a range for a each surface conditions. Drainage Sewer Design Guideline revised at 2011 proposes return periods 10~30 year instead of 5~10 year for increasing design flood. Ponce and ASCE refer higher values of runoff coefficient require for higher values of rainfall intensity and return period, therefore runoff coefficient had to be corrected but not. In case of park, land use and surface type are different from Korea and U.S, so impervious area ratio is different. The runoff coefficient for park is estimated considering with impervious area ratio and return period. 1,004's parks in 20 cities are randomly selected for impervious area ratio and runoff coefficient is estimated. And a proportion of 30 year return period runoff coefficient to 10 year return period with rainfall duration is calculated for 69 weather stations. The estimated runoff coefficient is 0.43~0.54 for return period 10~30 year and the difference of region and rainfall duration is not significant.

  • The purpose of this study is to estimate an optimum formula of rainfall intensity on basis of the characteristics for short period of rainfall duration in Kyungpook province for the design of urban sewerage and small basin drain system. Results studied are as follows; 1. The optimum method for Taegu and Pohang, Iwai's and Gumbel-Chow's method are recommended respectively. 2. The opotimum type of rainfall intensity for these area, $I=\frac{a}{\sqrt{t}+b}$ (Japanese type), is confirmed with 2.52~4.17 and 1.86~4.54 as a standard deviation for Taegu and Pohang respectively. The optimum formula of rainfall intensity are as follows. Taegu : T : 200 year - $I=\frac{824}{\sqrt{t}+1.5414}$ T : 100 year - $I=\frac{751}{\sqrt{t}+1.4902}$ T : 50 year - $I=\frac{678}{\sqrt{t}+1.4437}$ T : 30 year - $I=\frac{623}{\sqrt{t}+1.4017}$ T : 20 year - $I=\frac{580}{\sqrt{t}+1.3721}$ T : 10 year - $I=\frac{502}{\sqrt{t}+1.3145}$ T : 5 year - $I=\frac{418}{\sqrt{t}+1.2515}$ Pohang : T : 200 year - $I=\frac{468}{\sqrt{t}+1.1468}$ T : 100 year - $I=\frac{429}{\sqrt{t}+1.1605}$ T : 50 year - $I=\frac{391}{\sqrt{t}+1.1852}$ T : 30 year - $I=\frac{362}{\sqrt{t}+1.2033}$ T : 20 year - $I=\frac{339}{\sqrt{t}+1.2229}$ T : 10 year - $I=\frac{299}{\sqrt{t}+1.2578}$ T : 5 year - $I=\frac{257}{\sqrt{t}+1.3026}$ 3. Significant I.D.F. curves derived should be applied to estimate a suitable rainfall intensity and rainfall duration.

  • Recently, it seems increasing trends that the design floods on the middle and small scale of urban regions and natural basins are evaluated with introducing to the concept of the critical storm duration. However the study of the critical storm duration is not sufficient and especially on the natural basins, it rarely performed. therefore in this study, estimated the critical storm duration and peak discharge according to the rainfall distribution type, the position of peak rainfall intensity, and the frequency on the natural basins were evaluated using Clark model and the influence of each factors on the design floods was analyzed with sensitivity analysis on the parameters of the model.

  • Extreme rainfall events caused severe damage to human life and property due to the inundation in major urban areas. In particular, the increase in the intensity of rainfall due to climate change causes changes in the design flood discharge. As a result, it causes uncertainty in the design criteria of hydraulic structures. However, quantitative analysis results have not been provided due to the limitations of climate scenarios and the uncertainty in climate changes. Therefore, this research chose Bulgwangcheon basin as the target basin to analysis the discharge considering climate change. As the result, it is necessary to strengthen design standards since the amount of discharge increased by 14.2% even in the near future.

  • Recently actual rainfall pattern is decreasing rainy days and increasing in rainfall intensity and the frequency of flood occurrence is also increased. To consider recent situation, Engineers use deterministic methods like a PMP(Probable Maximum Precipitation). If design storm wouldn't occur, increasing of design criteria is extravagant. In addition, the biggest structure cause trouble with residents and environmental problem. And then it is necessary to study considering probability of rainfall parameter in each sub-basin for design of water structure. In this study, stochastic rainfall patterns are generated by using log-ratio method, Johnson system and multivariate Monte Carlo simulation. Using the stochastic rainfall patterns, hydrological analysis, hydraulic analysis and 2nd flooding analysis were performed based on GIS for their applicability. The results of simulations are similar to the actual damage area so the methodology of this study should be used about making a flood risk map or regidental shunting rout map against the region.

  • Many studies for slope stability studies have indicated that the infiltration of rainwater into a slope decrease the slope stability. In order to minimize damage caused by slope failure, most design codes suggest that the slope stability be analyzed by saturated condition during rainy season. However it would be excessively conservative condition that every soil slope is saturated in rainy season irrespective of rainfall intensity, soil type and slope geometry. In addition, because most soil slopes are in an unsaturated state, it is necessary to consider the unsaturated characteristics of slope. This paper suggests a prediction method of saturation time for the weathered granite soil slopes due to rainfalls. The finite element analysis of transient water flow through unsaturated slope was used to investigate effects of soil-water characteristics, permeability at saturation, slope geometry, and rainfall intensity. From the result of these analyses, the prediction charts considering soil-water characteristics, permeability at saturation, and slope height were proposed in this study. It is possible to the time required to be saturated slope after rainfall.
