This article presents the statistical characteristics of elastic floor acceleration spectra that represent the peak response demand of non-structural components attached to a nonlinear supporting frame. For this purpose, a set of stiff and flexible general moment resisting frames with periods of 0.3-3.6 sec. are analyzed using forty-nine near-field strong ground motion records. Peak accelerations are derived for each single degree of freedom non-structural component, supported by the above mentioned frames, through a direct-integration time-history analysis. These accelerations are obtained by Floor Acceleration Response Spectrum (FARS) method. They are statistically analyzed in the next step to achieve a better understanding of their height-wise distributions. The factors that affect FARS values are found in the relevant state of the art. Here, they are summarized to evaluate the amplification and/or reduction of FARS values especially when the supporting structures undergo inelastic behavior. The properties of FARS values are studied in three regions: long-period, fundamental-period and short-period. Maximum elastic acceleration response of non-structural component, mounted on inelastic frames, depends on the following factors: inelasticity intensity and modal periods of supporting structure; natural period, damping ratio and location of non-structural component. The FARS values, corresponded to the modal periods of supporting structure, are strongly reduced beyond elastic domain. However, they could be amplified in the transferring period domain between the mentioned modal periods. In the next step, the amplification and/or reduction of FARS values, caused by inelastic behavior of supporting structure, are calculated. A parameter called the response acceleration reduction factor ($R_{acc}$), has been previously used for far-field earthquakes. The feasibility of extending this parameter for near-field motions is focused here, suggested repeatedly in the relevant sources. The nonlinearity of supporting structure is included in ($R_{acc}$) for better estimation of maximum non-structural component absolute acceleration demand, which is ordinarily neglected in the seismic design provisions.

A general procedure is presented here to develope seismic design and analysis method for cable-supported bridges like suspension bridges subjected to ground motion. For representing a numerical model of suspension bridges. a new approach which satisfy design conditions for the initial equilibrium state of suspension bridges. without any nonlinear iterations. is proposed. The dynamic behavior of that model is verified by free vibration analysis. This study uses the response spectrum analysis to determine the Peak response of a suspension bridge to earthquake-induced ground motion. The SRSS(Square Root of Sum of Square). modal combination rule, is adopted for each direction, longitudinal and transverse. To illustrate the potential applicability for the seismic design of suspension bridges, a numerical example is presented in which the dynamic response of the Nam-hae suspension bridge subjected to earthquake

In the companion paper (I-Problem Statements of the Current Seismic Design Code), the current Korean seismic design code is required to be modified considering site characteristics in Korea for the reliable estimation of site amplification. In this paper, three site classification methods based on the mean shear wave velocity of the top 30m $V_{S30}$, fundamental site periods $(T_G)$ and bedrock depth were investigated and compared with each other to determine the best classification system. Not enough of a difference in the standard deviation of site coefficients $(F_a\;and\;F_v)$ to determine the best system, and neither is the difference between the average spectral accelerations and the design response spectrum of each system. However, the amplification range of RRS values based on $T_G$ were definitely concentrated on a narrow band than other classification system. It means that sites which have a similar behavior during earthquake will be classified as the same site category at the site classification system based on $T_G$. The regression curves between site coefficients and $T_G$ described the effect of soil non linearity well as the rock shaking intensity increases than the current method based on $V_{S30}$. Furthermore, it is unambiguous to determine sue category based on $T_G$ when the site investigation is performed to shallower depth less than 30m, whereas the current $V_{S30}$ is usually calculated fallaciously by extrapolating the $V_s$ of bedrock to 30m. From the results of this study, new site classification system based on $T_G$ was recommended for legions of shallow bedrock depth in Korea.

A linear quarter model of a vehicle suspension system is built and simulated. Especially the so-called sensitivity analysis is conducted in order to show its applicability to design problems, and sensitivity function is determined in the frequency domain. The change of frequency response function is predicted, which depends on the design parameter variation and the property is verified by computer simulation. Typical performance measures, namely, sprung mass acceleration, suspension deflection, and tire deflection are examined. The vehicle model is analyzed for ist performance sensitivity as a function of the system's feedback gains. The variable feedback gains are selected as the spring and damping coefficients. Frequency response, RMS response, and performance index of the performance evaluation variables are considered and three-dimensional and contour plots of response surfaces are formed to examine output sensitivity to suspension feedback. Performance trade-offs over the entire frequency spectrum are identified from the FRF, and that between ride quality and handling characteristics are examined from the RMS responses.

The seismic response analysis of a freestanding spent fuel storage cask model are performed for an artificial time history acceleration generated by the basis on the US NRC RG1.60 response acceleration spectrum. This paper focuses on the structural stability by seismic loads to check the overturing possibility of storage cask and the slipping displacement on bed. Parametric analyses of a simplified cask model are performed to take into account the variations in seismic load magnitude and cask/bed interface friction. The analyses results show that the storage cask has a large marginal integrity in the response acceleration and slipping distance for both design seismic and beyond design seismic loads.

In 1992, the first design standard of quake proof bridge was established. However, most bridge structures which were constructed without considering earthquake in former times need performance of quakeproof property. Quakeproof analysis in current bridges, is based on analysis of load base which just has strength over the load of simple structures but is not checked through simple comparison of strength performance of structures so that we would like to check that ADRS method is reasonable or not using ADRS method(Accleration-Displacement Response Spectrum Method), a analysis method based on displacement of object of performance test. As the result of that, the capacity spectrum method can avoid complex dynamic analysis in analysis based on loads and it efficiently applies to design verification with normal checking for quakeproof performance and aimed performance of new structures. However we can not consider effects of high modes and it has problem that does not consider falling of performance in structures by repeated load.

This study investigates important parameters used to determine an effective peak ground acceleration (EPGA) based on the characteristics of response spectra of historical earthquakes occurred at Korean peninsula. EPGAs are very important since they are implemented in the Korean Building Code for the seismic design of new structures. Recently, the Gyeongju earthquakes with the largest magnitude in earthquakes measured at Korea took place and resulted in non-structural and structural damage, which their EPGAs should need to be evaluated. This paper first describes the basic concepts on EPGAs and the EPGAs of the Gyeongju earthquakes are then evaluated and compared according to epicentral distances, site classes and directions of seismic waves. The EPGAs are dependant on normalizing factors and ranges of period on response spectrum constructed with the Gyeongju earthquake records. Using the normalizing factors and the ranges of period determined based on the characteristics of domestic response spectra, this paper draw a conclusion that the EPGAs are estimated to be about 30 % of the measured peak ground accelerations (PGA).

In a previous study, the impact factor response spectrum and corresponding method for evaluating the load carrying capacity of bridges was suggested to improve the existing evaluation method. To verify the applicability of the suggested method, which is based on the frequency of bridges, the dynamic characteristic test for an actual single span simply-supported bridge was conducted. Through a field test under ambient traffic conditions, the dynamic response of the bridge was obtained using wireless accelometers and its fundamental frequency was identified. The peak impact factor was determined from the identified frequency and the impact factor response spectrum. The load carrying performance variation of the bridge was estimated considering the performance reduction factor, which was calculated using the current and previous natural frequency and impact factor. From the result, the load carrying capacity of the bridge was decreased, but the capacity was still enough because its value is greater than the design live load. Through the overall procedures and technical details presented in this paper, the suggested evaluation method can be applied to actual bridges with the acceleration data measured under ambient traffic conditions and the impact factor response spectrum.
Recently, several studies have been conducted on virtual fixed-point and elastic soil spring methods to simulate the soil-pile interaction in response to spectrum analysis of pile-supported structures. However, the soil spring stiffness has not been properly considered due to the seismic load magnitude, and studies on the response spectrum analysis of pile-supported structures considering this circumstance are inadequate. Therefore, in this study, the response spectrum analysis was performed considering the soil spring stiffness according to the seismic load magnitude, and the dynamic behavior of the pile-supported structure was evaluated by comparing it with existing virtual fixed-point and elastic soil spring methods. Comparing the experiment and analysis, the moment differences occurred up to 117% and 21% in the virtual fixed-point and elastic soil spring models, respectively. Moreover, when the analysis was performed using an API p-y curve considering the soil spring stiffness according to the seismic load magnitude, the moment difference between the experiment and analysis was derived at a maximum of < 4%, and it is the most accurate method to simulate the experimental model response.

The purpose of this study is to assess the seismic performance of a reinforced concrete pier using ductility demand-based seismic design method and nonlinear earthquake analysis. A computer program named MIDAS/Civil(MIDAS IT,2009) for the analysis of the reinforced concrete pier was used. The bridge pier was designed by the ductility demand-based seismic design. In addition, a seismic performance was evaluated through both capacity spectrum method and nonlinear time history method. In order to determine the seismic performance of the bridge pier, the maximum response values from the capacity spectrum method and nonlinear time history analysis were compared each other.
