  • Slope collapse occurs mostly at the rainy season or thawing season in Korea. From a engineer point of view, the design criterion in recent of soil slopes during the rainfall have a conservative tendency because a slope stability is evaluated in the condition that ground water level is located in the surface. However, for the rational design of soil slopes during rainfall, the raining conditions and the unsaturated soil characteristics of soil slopes have to be considered. For the unsaturated soil characteristics of soil slopes, the laboratory tests for unsaturated soils and the seepage analyses for the raining conditions have to be performed. Due to these difficulties, a conservative design of soil slopes in the current design criterion has been carried out. In this paper, therefore, a simple design method is proposed. The method is considered to the unsaturated soil characteristics and the results of seepage analysis without numerical analysis. To verify the suggested design method, it is compared with both analysis results by current design criterion and analysis results based on the seepage analysis. Through the comparative study, it was found that the current design criterion has been excessively conservative. Hence, simple design method in this study was evaluated as the rational design for the soil slopes during rainfall.

  • It is required to estimate reliable design floods for hydraulic structures in order to respond more effectively to recent climate change. In this study, differences of design floods that were estimated the flood frequency analysis (FFA) and the design rainfall-runoff analysis (DRRA) were analyzed. In Korea, due to lack of measured flood data, the DRRA method is used in practice to determine the design floods. However, assuming the design floods estimated by the FFA as true values, the DRRA method over estimated the design floods by 79%. Thus, this study proposed a practical method to estimated design flood in ungauaged watersheds through regressive adjustment of flood quantiles estimated from the DRRA method. To this end, after investigating the differences between design floods acquired from the FFA and the DRRA method, nonlinear regression analyses were performed to develop the adjustment formulas for 8 large-dam watersheds. Applying the adjustment formula, the accuracy was improved by 65.0% on average over the DRRA method. In addition, when considering the watershed size, the adjustment formula increases the accuracy by 2.1%p on average over when not considering the watershed size.

  • This paper presents a case history of a geosynthetics-reinforced segmental retaining wall, which collapsed during a sever rainfall immediately after the completion of the wall construction. In an attempt to identify possible causes for the collapse, a comprehensive investigation was carried out including physical and strength tests on the backfill, stability analyses on the as-built design based on the current design approaches, and slope stability analyses with pore pressure consideration. The investigation revealed that the inappropriate as-built design and the bad-quality backfill were mainly responsible for the collapse. This paper describes the site condition including wall design, details of the results of investigation and finally, lessons learned. Practical significance of the findings from this study is also discussed.

  • The purpose of this study is to estimate the PMP frequency factor for evaluation of the Probable Maximum Precipitation (PMP) in Korea. The value of PMP is the criterion of the determination of design rainfall in Planning and designing hydraulic structures, and water resources management. To obtain the object, 12 key stations were selected in which have the automatic rain0recording paper of 20 years, and the annual maximum rainfall values were calculated for each 7 durations(10 min., 1, 2, 4, 6, 12, 24 hr.). The statistics(mean, standard deviation)were estimated, and diagram which shows the relationship between mean annual maximum rainfall($$) and frequency factor for each durations were drawn. PMP was estimated by statistical method using the PMP frequency factor obtained from the diagram and statistics($$, Sn). The PMP-Duration Equation was derived from the envelope curve in order to obtain the PMP for an arbitrary duration. The isohyetal map of 24 hours PMP and PMP. DAD curve for the whole of Korea were drawn in accordance with the point PMP values.

  • This study examined the applicability of MBLRP (Modified Bartlett-Lewis Rectangular Pulse) rainfall generation model for an urban flood simulation which is a type of Poisson cluster rainfall generation model. This study constructed XP-SWMM model for Namgajwa area of Hongjecheon basin, which is a two-dimensional pipe network-surface flood simulation program and computed a flood discharge and a flooded area with input data of synthetic rainfall time series of 200 years that were generated by the MBLRP model. This study compared the data of flood with synthetic rainfall and flood with corresponding values which were based on design rainfall. The results showed that the flooded area computed with MBLRP model was somewhat smaller than the corresponding values on the basis of the design. A degree of underestimation was from 8% (5 year) to 34% (200 year) and the degree of underestimation increased as a return period increased. This study is meaningful in that it proposes methodology that enables quantifiability of uncertain variables which are related to a flooding through Monte Carlo analysis of urban flooding simulation and applicability and limitations thereof.

  • Due to the calculation difficulty on the hydraulic and hydrologic analysis for road drainage facilities design, these analysis techniques are not applicable. This study's result are development of minutely rainfall-intensity equation suitable for road drainage area, verification of rainfall-runoff model joining kinematic wave theory for road drainage area, computational model based GUI for road surface drainage facilities spacing and culvert's size decision and various road drainage channel design. Applicable test on the developed model is proceed, result that in case of road surface dranage facilities spacing is narrower 6~65% than present spacing calculation method, in other case of road cross dranage facilities size is bigger 6~140% than present size decision method.

  • Prediction of exact soil loss yield has as important engineering meaning as prediction of exact flow measurement in a stream. The quantity of soil loss in a stream should be considered in planning and management of water resources and water quality such as design and maintenace of hydraulic structures : dams, weirs and seawalls, channel improvement, channel stabilization, flood control, design and operation of reservoirs and design of harbors. In this study, the soil loss of Sap-gyo reservoir watershed is simulated and estimated by RUSLE model which is generally used in the estimation of soil loss. The parameters of RUSLE model are selected and estimated using slope map, landuse map and soil map by GIS. These parameters are applied to RUSLE's estimating program. And soil loss under probability rainfall in different frequencies are estimated by recent 30 years of rainfall data of Sap-gyo reservoir watershed.
