Loss of human lives and properties including environmental damage due to large scale accidents requires change of our perception to marine safety. IMO is trying to re-establish overall marine safety system through long term plan such as GBS. Along this line, current regulation based safety evaluation is in process of changing into performance based methods, and for this transition, simulation based safety evaluation during design stage considering damage is highly necessary. In this paper, first, damage scenario is developed from IMO regulations and accident case studies. Then an integrated and simulation based safety evaluation prototype system considering both damage stability and structural safety is developed for the use during ship design process.
PURPOSES: Road Design Consistency Evaluation can guarantee road alignments with safety factors, however it can be hard work to deal with general car accident factors in only this evaluation index. Ideal Road Design Consistency Evaluation is show the mutual balance of road alignment and human factors with a variety of factors for road safety. METHODS: This study carried out overall road safety evaluations which are methods of running speeding consistency and car platoon safety analysis (driver's behaviors factors) as well. RESULTS: Out of 13 sections in a experimental road layout, safety factors of 8 sections showed 'Good' or 'Fair' status. However, 'Poor' results were found out in 5 sections. Particularly, it showed the different outcomes among the 4 evaluation methods used in this study. CONCLUSIONS: Road safety countermeasures were proposed for the potentially dangerous sections in road which failed to identify in the other methods. This study will contribute toward future study of more reliable Road Design Consistency Evaluation in the future for road safety.
Performance based design is a recent evolutionary step in the process of designing fire protection systems. In essence, it is a logical design process resulting in a solution that achieves a specified performance. Sometimes the prescriptive solutions presented in various codes and standards are too expensive or inflexible. Often the solutions do not and enables optimization of a solution for cost and function. In this study, performance based design was carried out to determine the extent of passive fire protection for oil terminal facilities. The results of performance based design were compared with those of prescriptive code based design. Performance based design is not always more economic than prescriptive code based design but provides more reliable and effective design that is fit for the purpose.
Human being can be divided into five elements in the Oriental Medicine. The remedy by using five elements constitution has been shown great effects clinically during that time. Therefore, The job design research considering Oriental Human Constitution is needed for job efficiency and safety. In This study, we examine whether the theory can be applied for job design through the experiment by 'Digital-type Speed Anticipation Reaction Tester' and suggest the desirable direction of job design.
This study was intended to develop a multi-purpose, multi-functional design for safety vest to enhance the safety and user's availability. With a limited scope to LED-applied safety vest, this study contemplates on the problems of safety vest on the market and directions for design development with a view to develop its prototype. This is a significant study because it has been conducted concerning a prototype, a cut above the study method of constructing a basic theory. For study method, theoretic considerations on LED and safety vest are followed by case study for LED-applied safety vest currently on the market to draw out problems. Then, solutions for problems with LED safety vest will be found, while planning for a design direction in consideration of safety, functionality and beauty. Scope of study was limited to cases of LED safety vests currently on sale online and offline, excluding cases of common-form luminosity such as HB luminous vest without LED. Accordingly, results of study will help develop the prototype for LED safety vest with an increase of the wearer's safety, and be used as a basic data for developing high-value-added fashion prodcts to meet his aesthetic sense and functionality. This study has limitations. Restricted scope for LED-applied safety vest should be extended to an outdoor wear in follow-up research for the foundation of higher value added.
It has been well known that traffic accidents occur under combined functional contributions of drivers, vehicles and road facilities, and that evaluation of safety levels for a specific road section or point is generally much complicated. Additionally, most of traffic accidents occur randomly implicating it is necessary to be evaluated in terms of probability theory. Thus, the evaluation model which reflects various characteristics and probabilistic distributions of traffic accidents has been necessary. The present paper provides a reliability based model with variables of probabilistic operating speeds and design speeds together which have been individually explaining associated characteristics in traffic accidents. Consequently, the model made it possible for speed management and road improvement projects to be evaluated in a common index. Application studies were performed in three cases. Through the studies, couples of facts were identified that the model successfully considered the probabilistic operating speeds and design speeds together and that then, the model evaluated road safety alternatives relatively which are complicatedly characterized and differently located.
Standard design of APR+(advanced power reactor plus) was certified at 2014 by Korea regulatory body. Based on the experience gained from OPR1000 and APR1400, the APR1400 was being developed as a 1,500MWe class reactor using Korean technologies for design code, reactor coolant pump, and man-machine interface system. APR+ has been basically designed to have the seismic design basis of safe shutdown earthquake (SSE) 0.3g, a 4-train safety concept based on N+2 design philosophy, and a passive auxiliary feedwater system (PAFS). Also, safety issues on the Fukushima-type accidents have been extensively reviewed and applied to enhance APR+ safety. APR+ provides higher reliability and safety against tsunami and earthquake. The purpose of this paper is to implement probabilistic safety assessment considering these design features and to analyze sensitivity of core damage frequency for large loss of coolant accident of APR+.
