  • A practical design method for supersonic wings has been developed. The method is based on Takanashi's method that uses integral equations and iterative "residual-correction" concept. The geometry correction is calculated by solving linearized small perturbation equation (LSP) with the difference between garget and objective surface pressure distributions as a boundary condition. In the present method, LSP equation is analytically transformed to integral equations by using the Green's theorem. Design results of an isolated wing and wing-nacelle configurations are presented here.

  • Standard on the carbon dioxide extinguishing system was prepared by the committed of the national fire protection assocition(NFPA)in USA on 1980. And this code is also applied to the design of a marine fire extinguishing system The most important problem in design is the uniform discharge of $CO_2$ through each nozzle from the high pressure $CO_2$ storage facility. The purpose of this paper is to develop the computer software to design the marine fire protection piping system. By solving the continuity equation energy equation and Bernoulli's equation simulataneously the flowrate in branch pipelines and discharge nozzles can be calculated.

  • Derivatives of eigenvalues and eigenvectors for statistical properties is presented. Dynamic response of random system including uncertainties for the design variable is calculated with the first order perturbation method to original governing equation. In optimal design methods, there is fundamental requirement for design gradients. A method for calculating the sensitivity coefficients is developed using the governing equation and first order perturbed equation.

  • With the emergence of ultra-high strength of concrete, the compression lap splice has become an important area of interest. According to ACI 318-08, a compression splice can be longer than a tension splice when high-strength concrete is used. By reevaluating the test results of compression splices and performing regression analysis, a simplified design equation for splice length in compression was developed based on the basic form of design equations for development/splice lengths of deformed bars and hooks in tension. A simple linear relation between $l_s/d_b$ and $f_{sc}\sqrt{f'_c}$ was assumed, and yields good values for the correlation coefficient and the mean and the COV (coefficient of variation) of the ratios of tests to predictions of splice strengths in compression. By including the 5% fractile coefficient of 0.83, a design equation for splice length in compression was developed. The splice length calculated using the proposed equation has a reliability that is equivalent to other provisions for reinforcing bars.

  • In order to evaluate compressive strength of centrally-loaded steel column at elevated temperature, new FE analysis techniques and assumptions of model were applied in this study. It also includes comparison with the existing studies, and a new design equation for centrally-loaded steel column at elevated temperature was proposed. The proposed equation was the most accurate of the three design equations(EC3, AISC, proposed equation) when comparing with the coefficient of determination on the simulated results and test results.

  • The object of this paper was to evaulate modified proposed design equation in model test result in order to estimate uplift-resistance of timber pile of reclaimed land greenhouse foundation. Uplift resistance result of model test was increased to according to increased of contact area. Uplift-resistance result of field test tend to lineary increased to according to increased of embedment depth and contact area. Results of field uplift-resistance was evaluate compare with modified proposed design equation results of model test and Effective stress method. As the Effective stress method tend to underestimate, modified proposed design equation results of model test tend to similar type. As the contact area increase, difference between field uplift-resistance results and modified proposed design equation results of model test was considered uplift-speed.

  • This paper introduces an improved design equation to evaluate the resisting capacity of circular reinforced concrete (RC) columns partially strengthened with outer steel tube. When RC column members are required to be strengthened according to the change in the loadings considered and/or the deterioration progress in columns, wrapping up RC column with steel circular tube, which takes the form of concrete filled steel tube (CFST), has been popularly considered because of its structural advantage induced from the confinement effect. However, the relatively high construction cost of steel tube is restricting its use to the required region, while deriving the shape of a partial CFST column. To evaluate the resisting capacity of a partial CFST column, numerical analyses need to be performed, and a numerical model proposed in the previous study for the numerical analysis of full CFST columns is used to conduct parametric studies for the introduction of a design equation. The bond-slip effect developed along the interface between the in-filled concrete and the exterior steel tube is taken into consideration and the validity of the numerical model has been established through correlation studies between experimental data and numerical results for partial CFST circular columns. Moreover, parametric studies make it possible to introduce a design equation for determining the optimum length of outer steel tube which produces partial CFST circular columns.

  • In dielectric waveguide analysis and synthesis, we often encounter an awkward task of solving the eigenvalue equation to find the value of propagation constant. Since the dispersion equation is an irrational equation, we cannot solve it directly. Taking advantage of approximated calculation, we attempt here to solve this irrational dispersion equation. A new type of eigenvalue equation, in which guide index is expressed as a function of frequency, has been developed. In practical optical waveguide designing and in calculating the propagation mode, this equation will be used more conveniently than the previous one. To expedite the design of the waveguide, we then solve the eigenvalue equation of a slab waveguide, which is sufficiently accurate for practical purpose.

  • The support structure of an optical mirror system is the one of the important design elements because the one affects the optical aberrations of the mirror surface. In this paper, Lagrange equation of the moving body of the fast steering mirror system(FSM) has been formulated to use with optimization design. Major goals for optimization are to assign the reasonably flexible stiffness to the structure and to enhance the first natural frequency of the mirror and support system in aid of more affordable control bandwidth for the FSM. Pursuing these purposes with the proposed method, the finite element analysis(FEA), optimization technique and the Zernike polynomial estimation are used for the design effects. It is concluded that the proposed approach for design well guides toward the desired design goals with regards to both structural and optical performances.

  • Three methods for design sensitivity analysis such as finite difference method(FDM), direct differentiation method(DDM) and adjoint variable method(AVM) are well known. FDM and DDM for design sensitivity analysis cost too much when the number of design variables is too large. An AVM is required to compute adjoint variables from the simultaneous linear system equation, the so-called adjoint equation. Because the adjoint equation is independent of the number of design variables, an AVM is efficient for when number of design variables is too large. In this study, AVM has been extended to the eigenproblem of damped systems whose eigenvlaues and eigenvectors are complex numbers. Moreover, this method is implemented into a commercial finite element analysis program by means of the semi-analytical method to show applicability of the developed method into practical structural problems. The proposed_method is compared with FDM and verified its accuracy for analytical and practical cases.
