  • This paper aims to analyze ecological characteristics of interior design, selecting as the subjects Busan-based construction companies which have a model house, among those that distribute apartments in Busan as of August 2006. Primarily, literature research Is conducted to understand recent trends of interior design for apartment building, present situations and characteristics of ecological design, and prepare environmentally-friendly guidelines and check-list items on the basis of domestic and overseas cases. Collected data in turn is analyzed to assess ecological characteristics of apartment building design in Korea today and present problems and directions for the future.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate current usages and situations of kitchen with regard to universal design concept in order to provide useful data to plan universally designed kitchen space for all family members. Previous studies for universal design and kitchen planning were reviewed and a checklist was developed to evaluate kitchen space based on universal design concept by researchers of this study. Also, all items in the checklist were reclassified by 5 universal design criteria(Supportiveness, Adaptability, Communicability, Pleasantness, and Accessibility) and analyzed sample kichens by the criteria. The 7 households with different characteristics*age, sex, degree of disability or aging, and number of family) were selected for case studies. The results of this study suggested several critical design points to establish directions or provide guidelines for further kitchen planning.

  • In general, the definition of criticism is making a constructive analysis between good & evil, right & wrong, and beauty & ugliness. Just as the literature, art, music, and architecture welcomes productive criticism in order for further advancement in each professional field, constructive criticism in the field of interior architecture must be activated stance it would be as useful as in other fields to upgrade the level of design quality If the constructive criticism were to be taken properly in the benefit of further advancement in particular design, then the criticism must hale a proper criteria in order to examine and review the design work objectively However, as the design symbolizes cultural interpretation and reaction towards better creativity, we expect design to be mutated in many different directions. As the limit of Interior architecture shares limitless possibilities in today's society, it seems that we need to set up a guidelines of design criticism in order to support the further development of the area of interior architecture.

  • New towns and large multi-family housing complexes are being built in the capital region of Korea, with the goal of creating safe and pedestrian-friendly cities. Traffic accidents in such residential complexes, however, is on the rise, creating social problems. While there have been many previous studies on problems with pedestrian environment; there is a dearth of studies that take design-based approach to ensure safety in pedestrian environment within residential complexes. Therefore, this study aims to prevent traffic accidents by properly planning pedestrian environment within multi-family housing complexes, in addition to emphasizing theories related to planning safer pedestrian environment in general. This study found the following design directions required to improve the design theory of pedestrian safety in multi-family housing complexes: (1) Linking traffic facilities and residential complex spaces in Korea; (2) Considering implementation of United Kingdom road systems; (3) Establishing appropriate objectives for each residential complex based on case study. In response to these findings, the study selected the A84BL complex in Hwaseong Dongtan 2 Complex located in Dongtan-myeon, Hwaseong-si in Gyeonggi Province, Korea. Items that can be implemented, as well as spatial design directions, were discussed with a focus on private vehicles, pedestrians, and service vehicles.

  • One of the shortcomings of seismic bridge design codes is the lack of clarity in defining the role of different seismic isolation systems with linear or nonlinear behavior in terms of R-factor. For example, based on AASHTO guide specifications for seismic isolation design, R-factor for all substructure elements of isolated bridges should be half of those expressed in the AASHTO standard specifications for highway bridges (i.e., R=3 for single columns and R=5 for multiple column bent) but not less than 1.50. However, no distinction is made between two commonly used types of seismic isolation devices, i.e., elastomeric rubber bearing (ERB) with linear behavior, and lead rubber bearing (LRB) with nonlinear behavior. In this paper, five existing bridges located in Iran with two types of deck-pier connection including ERB and LRB isolators, and two bridge models with monolithic deck-pier connection are developed and their R-factor values are assessed based on the Uang's method. The average R-factors for the bridges with ERB isolators are calculated as 3.89 and 4.91 in the longitudinal and transverse directions, respectively, which are not in consonance with the AASHTO guide specifications for seismic isolation design (i.e., R=3/2=1.5 for the longitudinal direction and R=5/2=2.5 for the transverse direction). This is a clear indicator that the code-prescribed R-factors are conservative for typical bridges with ERB isolators. Also for the bridges with LRB isolators, the average computed R-factors equal 1.652 and 2.232 in the longitudinal and transverse directions, respectively, which are in a good agreement with the code-specified R-factor values. Moreover, in the bridges with monolithic deck-pier connection, the average R-factor in the longitudinal direction is obtained as 2.92 which is close to the specified R-factor in the bridge design codes (i.e., 3), and in the transverse direction is obtained as 2.41 which is about half of the corresponding R-factor value in the specifications (i.e., 5).

  • Wave propagation was studied for an unidirectionally reinforced composite materials. The velocities, the particle directions and the amplitudes of reflected and transmitted waves were obtained. This analysis involves an immersion C-scan procedure. Snell's law was modified to get the velocities of waves. This analysis could be applied to the detection of flaws in a transversely isotropic composite motor case.

  • The scientific, professional and reliable image of doctor's coats is changing over the years, and many countries around the world are changing doctor's coat designs or removing them altogether. This study researches the history and significance of doctor's coats, and based on the research, designs and develops new doctor's coats for the Seoul National University Hospital Department of Dermatology where traditional white polyester and cotton coats are still being worn. The positive results of the study indicate that doctor's coat designs can be developed in different directions that reflect certain identities and moods while maintaining professionalism.

  • This study purports to contribute in deepening our understanding of ISD (instructional systems design/development) from Edward Hall's concept of intercultural communication. Renowned anthropologist Edward Hall introduced three concepts of cultural differences: time, space, and context. This paper explores how theses cultural dimensions - time, space and context- are reflected in ISD and compares the cultural differences between the east and the west that emerge in the process of applying ISD.
