  • Treatment of femoral bone defects continues to be a challenge in revision total hip arthroplasty (THA); therefore, meticulous preoperative evaluation of patients and surgical planning are required. This review provides a concise synopsis of the etiology, classification, treatment strategy, and prosthesis selection in relation to femoral bone loss in revision THA. A search of literature was conducted for identification of research articles related to classification of bone loss, management of femoral revision, and comparison of different types of stems. Findings of a thorough review of the included articles were as follows: (1) the Paprosky classification system is used most often when defining femoral bone loss, (2) a primary-length fully coated monoblock femoral component is recommended for treatment of types I or II bone defects, (3) use of an extensively porous-coated stem and a modular fluted tapered stem is recommended for management of types III or IV bone defects, and (4) use of an impaction grafting technique is another option for improvement of bone stock, and allograft prosthesis composite and proximal femoral replacement can be applied by experienced surgeons, in selected cases, as a final salvage solution. Stems with a tapered design are gradually replacing components with a cylindrical design as the first choice for femoral revision; however, further confirmation regarding the advantages and disadvantages of modular and nonmodular stems will be required through conduct of higher-level comparative studies.

  • We propose a novel application of random forest, a machine learning-based general classification algorithm, to analyze the influence of design attributes on the silicon-to-SPICE (S2S) gap. To improve modeling accuracy, we introduce magnification of learning data as well as randomization for the counting of design attributes to be used for each tree in the forest. From the automatically generated decision trees, we can extract the so-called importance and impact indices, which identify the most significant design attributes determining the S2S gap. We apply the proposed method to actual silicon data, and observe that the identified design attributes show a clear trend in the S2S gap. We finally unveil 10nm key fin-shaped field effect transistor (FinFET) structures that result in a large S2S gap using the measurement data from 10nm test vehicles specialized for model-hardware correlation.

  • Genetic algorithm is a optimization technique based on the mechanics of natural selection and natural genetics. Global optimum solution can be obtained efficiently by operations of reproduction, crossover and mutation in genetic algorithm. The authors developed a computer program which can optimize marine propulsion shafting by using binary-coded genetic algorithm and modal analysis method. In order to confirm the effectiveness of the developed computer program, we apply the program to a optimum design problem which is to obtain optimum diameters of intermediate shaft and propeller shaft in marine propulsion shafting. Objective function is to minimize total mass of shafts and constraints are that torsional vibration stresses of shafts in marine propulsion shafting can not exceed the permissible torsional vibration stresses of the ship classification society. The computational results by the program were compared with those of conventional design technique.

  • In this paper, the human detecting radar system for indoor security applications is proposed, and its FPGA-based implementation results are presented. In order to minimize the complexity and memory requirements of the computation, the top half of the spectrogram was used to extract features, excluding the feature extraction techniques that require complex computation, feature extraction techniques were proposed considering classification performance and complexity. In addition, memory requirements were minimized by designing a pipeline structure without storing the entire spectrogram. Experiments on human, dog and robot cleaners were conducted for classification, and 96.2% accuracy performance was confirmed. The proposed system was implemented using Verilog-HDL, and we confirmed that a low-area design using 1140 logics and 6.5 Kb of memory was possible.

  • Recently advanced security threats have increasingly occurred, and the necessity and importance of Information Security has been growing with the advent of the era of convergence beyond information-oriented age. Most domestic studies in the field of occupational classification of Information Security have only focused on technology-oriented occupations. Relatively little research has been carried out on the occupational classification in the view of convergence environment. Therefore, in this paper we gave a definition of Information Security occupations, classified them and draw required capabilities by occupations in order to design the occupational classification system of Information Security and the required capabilities for future convergence environment by analyzing the previous studies. We also reclassified the occupational classification and required capabilities by occupations, and verified the validity of them based on National Initiative for Cybersecurity Education's the occupational classification system of Information Security considering the future convertgence environment. It is expected that the results of this study will be employed as base data for manpower demand and supply and improvement of working conditions in the future convergence environments. In the future study we will build standardized instruction methods which provide occupational capabilities by using the required capabilities by occupations.

  • This paper introduces design method for air pump system using bond graph and genetic programming to maximize outflow subject to a constraint specifying maximum power consumption. The air pump system is a mixed domain system which includes electromagnetic, mechanical and pneumaticelements. Therefore an appropriate approach for a better system for synthesis is required. Bond graphs are domain independent, allow free composition, and are efficient for classification and analysis of models, Genetic programming is well recognized as a powerful tool for open-ended search. The combination of these two powerful methods for evolution of multi-domain system, BG/GP, was tested for redesign of air pump system.

  • Since one property(i.e. coarseness, orientation, regularity, granularity etc.) of ultrasound liver images was not sufficiently enough to classify the characteristics of livers, we used the multi-feature vectors from ultrasound images to diagnose the liver disease. The proposed classifier, which uses the multi-feature vectors and Bayes decision rule, performed well for the classification of normal, fat and cirrhosis liver. In our simulation, we used the Battacharyya distance and Hotelling Trace Criterion to select the best multi-feature vectors for the classifier and obtained less classification errors than other methods using single feature vector.

  • Mean shear wave velocity of the upper 30m $(V_s30)$ used as the current site classification criterion for determining seismic design ground motions in Korea was established based on the typical depth of site investigations in western US, in which the depth to bedrock is much deeper than that in Korea. In this study, to establish appropriate site classification system for site conditions of Korea, site investigations including in-situ seismic tests to determine shear wave velocity $(V_s)$ were carried out at total 72 sites in Korean peninsula. The mean $V_s's$ to the depths of 5m, 10m, 15m, 20m and 25m together with the $V_s30$ at the testing sites were determined, and the correlation between the mean $V_s$ to a depth shallower than 30m and the $V_s30$ was drawn and suggested for the efficient seismic site classification in Korea. The proposed correlation could be utilized for the seismic design in case of the $V_s$ profiles shallower than 30 m in depth. The correlation in this study, nevertheless, requires further modification by means of the accumulation of various site data in Korea.

  • The purpose of this study is to design, implement and evaluate a personalized search system using gathered information on users to provide more accurate search results. For this purpose, a hybrid-based user profile is constructed by using subject classification. In order to evaluate the performance of the proposed system, experts directly measured and evaluated MRR, MAP and usability by using the Korean journal articles of science and technology DB. Its performance was better than the general search system in the area of "Computer Science" and "Library and Information Science". Especially better results were shown when tested on ambiguous keywords. Evaluation through in-depth interviews proved that the proposed personalized search system was more efficient in looking up and obtaining information. In addition, the proposed personalized search system provided a variety of recommendation systems which proved helpful in navigating for new information. High user satisfaction ratings on the proposed personalized search system were another proof of its usefulness. In this study, we were able to prove through expert evaluation that the proposed personalized search system was more efficient in information retrieval.
