  • Difficulties in developing process of Liquid Crystal Display(LCD) products such as frequent design modifications, various design requirements, and short-term development period bring on the need of integrated design approach that is efficient and easy to handle. Back Light Unit(BLU) of the LCD, which drastically affects the optical performance of LCD products, is divided into in-coupling part and out-coupling part. Serration of the in-coupling part flattens the light received from point light sources and dot pattern of the out-coupling part regularizes the light sent to screen. Therefore, the optical performance of a LCD product is largely influenced by the shape of serration and the arrangement of dot pattern. In this research, a new design approach which enables to improve the optical performance of LCD products and overcome the prementioned difficulties in developing process of LCD products is proposed. The shape of serration is parameterized to 3 parameters and out-coupling part is partitioned into 10 partitions to apply the optimization technique to this problem. 3 parameters for the shape of serration and densities of 10 partitions are used as design variables in the design optimization. Optical simulation tool named SPEOS is used to evaluate the optical performance of the LCD product. Since the optical simulation uses the random ray tracing technique, numerical noise may possibly be included in the simulation process. To solve the problem caused by numerical noise, the PQRSM which can stably find the solution of the noise problem is used in this research.

  • an approach to air-vehicle design, an application of the radio-controlled model flight test techniques has been presented. The approach presented in this study is to validate the air-vehicle design configuration by analyzing the flight test results of scale model with dynamic similarities, and then to apply the analyzed results to the aerodynamic design process in early stage of the air-vehicle development. To develop practically applicable similarity laws for the subscale flying model design, the air-vehicle motions are decoupled into rotational motions for stability & control similarities and translational motions for flight performance similarities. Also, detail techniques for radio-controlled model flight test have been developed. Based on the results obtained from the radio-controlled flight test, the present approach for air-vehicle design has shown to be useful to validate the air-vehicle design configuration.

  • The primary goal of the database design is to organize a large amount of data effectively in users and systems view point. Effective design of a database is very important for processing applications efficiently. In this paper, we discuss database design for an urban geographic information system that effectively maintains the cadastral and planimetric information. We first collect and analyze the requirements for the target urban geographic information system and then perform database design for these requirements. Our database design is based on the object-oriented approach that has rich expressive power and good reusability in comparison with the traditional relational approach. Especially, we employ the OMT, one of the most widely-used object-oriented models. We expect that our result would be helpful in building large databases for urban geographic information systems practically.

  • Product array approach which is used in the Taguchi parameter design has a number of advantages by considering the noise factor. However, a disadvantage of this method is that it requires an excessively large number of experiments. So combined array approach have been proposed to reduce the number of experiments. Taguchi has used the signal-to-noise ratio to find the optimum conditions in the Taguchi parameter design. In analyzing the data from the parameter design various problems tends occur by using an SN. In this paper, we propose an alternative solution for reducing the number of experiments without depending on the signal-to-noise ratio to overcome the shortcomings of the parameter design. Two examples illustrate this procedure in the two different experimental design (product array, combined array) approaches.

  • The design of honeycomb sandwich structures is often challenging because these structures can be tailored from a variety of possible cores and face sheets configurations, therefore, the design of sandwich structures is characterized as a time-consuming and complex task. A data-driven computational approach that integrates the analytical method and Artificial Neural Network (ANN) is developed by the authors to rapidly predict the design of sandwich structures for a targeted maximum structural deflection. The elaborated ANN reverse design approach is applied to obtain the thickness of the sandwich core, the thickness of the laminated face sheets, and safety factors for composite sandwich structure. The required data for building ANN model were obtained using the governing equations of sandwich components in conjunction with the Monte Carlo Method. Then, the functional relationship between the input and output features was created using the neural network Backpropagation (BP) algorithm. The input variables were the dimensions of the sandwich structure, the applied load, the core density, and the maximum deflection, which was the reverse input given by the designer. The outstanding performance of reverse ANN model revealed through a low value of mean square error (MSE) together with the coefficient of determination (R2) close to the unity. Furthermore, the output of the model was in good agreement with the analytical solution with a maximum error 4.7%. The combination of reverse concept and ANN may provide a potentially novel approach in designing of sandwich structures. The main added value of this study is the elaboration of a reverse ANN model, which provides a low computational technique as well as savestime in the design or redesign of sandwich structures compared to analytical and finite element approaches.

  • There are so many theories and arguments on the architectural design process. However, in the time of the environmental preservation, there is the need for the introduction of the systematic green design process because no existing design process theories could give the rational design tool far the integrated design with environmental factors. This study, through the literature survey, is on the new paradigm for the systematic approach to the integrated process of 'the Green Design'.

  • Crahworthy design of trains is now indispensable procedure in modern railway vehicle design for ensuring the safety of passengers and crew. It is now widely recognized that a more strategic approach is needed in order to absorb higher level energy in a controlled manner and minimize passenger injuries effectively. The first design step in this strategic approach is the design of the front end structure(so called HE extremities) to absorb a large part of total impact energy and then the structure of passengers non-accommodation zones(so called HE extremities) is designed to absorb the rest of impact energy. In this paper, the passengers entrance door area is selected as the LE(low energy) extremities and the design of the LEE was carried out. The main part of LEE design procedures is the design of energy absorbing tubes. For this purpose, the several tube candidates are introduced and compared to each others with numerical crash simulation.

  • This paper presents an analytical design method of a passive harmonic filter for a three-phase diode rectifier and uses a new transfer function approach in the analysis and design. The transfer function approach derives an analytical formulation of an utility system including passive filters with a basis of Laplace transform and provides a graphical formulation so that a visualized insight into an interaction between individual filter and system response can be attainted. Harmonic impedance, voltage division and current division transfer function are used as a design tool, which makes a calculated filter parameters to satisfy IEEE-519 distortion limits. A simple five-step design procedure is introduced in the filter design, which consists of system analysis, selection of PCC(Point of Common Coupling), filter specification calculation, appropriate filter design for system and filter implementation. Philosophy governing the design procedure is based on a numerical/graphical iterative solution, trial and error with visualization feed-back based on "algebra on the graph". Finally, performance of the designed passive harmonic filter is verified by experiment and shows that 5th, 7th, 9th, 11th and 13th harmonics are decreased within IEEE-519 distortion limits, respectively.

  • 20th century was the age of Modernism which was based on rational side of human mind. However, with the fall of Modernism, also came the fall of rationalism's dictatorship. Now, we see the pursuit and quest of irrational thinking as a new possibility of human expression which actually was already begun by Dada and Surrealism in early 20th century. It was facilitated by re-evaluation of Freud's psychoanalytic theory at the end of 20th century. This paper researches psychoanalytic approach applied to the analyses of unconscious human desires in art and design, especially its application to contemporary space design. These designs represent, without making any ethical evaluation, the fact that those unconscious desires are part of inborn human nature and the fact that 21st century is heading toward open society which embraces diverse values and possibilities. By analyzing irrational tendencies in contemporary space designs, this paper aims at proving the meaning and value for one of new directions in 21st century space design. First chapter is an introduction. Second chapter studies Freud's psychoanalytic theory. Third chapter examines the psychoanalytic methodologies with which unconscious desires are expressed in art and design. Fourth chapter classifies the types of subconscious desires expressed in contemporary space designs and analyzes their case studies. Fifth chapter is the conclusion.
