  • The pilot system for radioactive liquid laundry waste was developed with treatment capacity, 1ton/hr and set up in the Yong Kwang unit #4. The system is composed of tank module, RO systems and a UV/$H_2O$$_2$photo-oxidation unit. The RO system consists of the BW unit (low-pressure RO for brackish water desalination) and the SW unit (high-pressure RO for seawater desalination). The BW unit possesses 4 RO membranes and it can reduce the feed water volume down to 1/10. This concentrated feed water can be reduced again up to 1/10 in its volume in the SW unit composed of 4 RO membranes. The UV/$H_2O$$_2$ photo-oxidation process unit was used for the detergent degradation. The operation of the pilot system was carried out and verified in its capability through the continuous operation and concentration operation using the actual liquid waste from the power plant. The design criteria and data for industrialization were yielded. The efficiency of the UV/$H_2O$$_2$ photo-oxidation process and the optimum operational procedure were evaluated. The decontamination factors for radioactive cobalt and cesium were measured. This on-site test showed the experimental result in the DF$\geq$300 and volume reduction factor$\geq$100.

  • Energy recovery device (ERD) is used to save energy consumption in seawater reverse osmosis processes. However, small-scale ERDs (<$100m^3/d$) are hardly observed in seawater desalination market. In South Korea, most of seawater desalination plants for drinking water production are small-scaled and have been operated in island areas or on ships. Thus, the effect of ERDs for these small-scale SWRO processes should not be neglected. In this work, the small-scale SWRO processes are designed and analyzed in terms of energy consumption with/without ERD. The realistic efficiencies of high pressure pumps are considered for the energy analyses. The unit cost of electricity depending on the application place (e.g., inland and island areas, on ships) is investigated to calculate the energy cost for unit water production in various SWRO applications classified by plant capacity, application place, and the installation of ERD. As a result, the energy cost can be saved up to $1,640.4KRW/m^3$ when ERD is applied, and the saving effect increases at smaller plants on ships. In conclusion, the development of small-scale ERDs are necessary because small-scale SWRO processes are dominant in Korean seawater desalination market, and the electricity saving effect becomes higher at smaller-scaled system.

  • This paper presents an energy saving hydrostatic pressure exchanger for sea water desalination equipment. In a reverse osmosis(RO) system for desalinating sea water, more than 70 percent of the supplied sea water, brines which were impassable through RO membrane are bypassed, resulting in high energy losses. In this paper, a hydrostatic pressure exchanger consisting of an embedded water hydraulic piston motor and a water hydraulic piston pump was proposed and investigated in order to recover the energy of the bypassed brines. The pressurized brines are supplied to the embedded water hydraulic piston motor as power sources and the water hydraulic piston pump is driven by the output torque of the embedded water hydraulic piston motor as well as electric motor. Consequently, the energy of the bypassed brines can be recovered. To examine the electric energy saving characteristics of the hydrostatic pressure exchanger, a simulation model was constructed using commercial software and experiments were conducted. Through the results of simulation and experiment, the feasibility of the electric energy saving effect of the proposed hydrostatic pressure exchanger was investigated.

  • In this study, the ejector design was modeled using Fluent 6.3 of FVM(Finite Volume Method) CFD(Computational Fluid Dynamics) techniques to resolve the flow dynamics in the ejector. A vacuum system with the ejector has been widely used because of its simple construction and easy maintenance. Ejector is the main part of the desalination system, of which designs determine the efficiency of system. The effects of the ejector was investigated geometry and the operating conditions in the hydraulic characteristics. The ejector consists mainly of a nozzle, suction chamber, mixing tube (throat), diffuser and draft tube. Liquid is supplied to the ejector nozzle, the fast liquid jet produced by the nozzle entrains and the non condensable gas was sucked into the mixing tube. The multiphase CFD modeling was carried out to determine the hydrodynamic characteristics of seawater-air ejector. Condition of the simulation was varied in entrance mass flow rate (1kg/s, 1.5kg/s, 2kg/s, 2.5kg/s, 3kg/s), and position of driving nozzle was located from the central axis of the suction at -10mm, 0mm, 10mm, 20mm, 30mm.. Asaresult, suction flow velocity has the highest value in central axis of the suction.

  • When external pressure higher than osmosis pressure is reversely derived into solution, its solvent is moved into the solution having lower concentration, which is called 'reverse osmosis'. We investigated the desalination application of deep ocean water using reverse osmosis pressure of $40-70\;kgf/cm^2$ We observed how to operational factor j like flow rate, water temperature and pressure have effect on efficiency of reverse osmosis membrane and salts rejection. Fluxes of reverse osmosis membrane are directly proportional to water temperature and pressure. However, salts rejection rates are positively correlated with pressure and inversely proportional to water temperature. Separation efficiencies of osmosis membrane for major elements such as $Mg^{2+},\;Ca^{+2},\;Na^+\;and\;K^+$ are as follows in a strong electrolysis solution like seawater; $Ca^{2+},\;Mg^{2+}>K^+>Na^+$. Rejection rates of $Mg^{2+}\;and\;Ca^{2+}$ that have high electric charges are over 99% and show positively correlation with water temperature. Rejection rates of $Na^+$ having low electric charge is observed to be 98%-99%, which rates is much lower than those of $2^+$ charged ions like $Ca^{2+}\;and\;Mg^{2+}$. Ion rejection rates of boron, B, are much low because boron is present il free state or gas phase in seawater. Boron concentration in desalination water is over criteria of Korean drinking water, 0.3 mg/L. However, we could satisfied with the criteria of drinking water under the operation condition like temperature $5^{\circ}C$ and pressure $70kgf/cm^2$, using the relationship that rejection rates of boron is proportional to pressure and is inversely proportional to water temperature

  • The conventional ejector-diffuser system makes use of high pressure primary stream to propel the secondary stream through pure shear action for the purposes of transport or compression of fluid. It has been widely used in many industrial applications such as seawater desalination, solar refrigeration, marine engineering, etc. The present study is performed numerically to study the performance of a two-stage ejector-diffuser system. The detailed flow phenomenon of the ejector-diffuser system has been critically predicted by means of the numerical approach using compressible Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations. The axi-symmetric supersonic ejector-diffuser flow has been solved by a fully implicit finite volume scheme with a two-equation k-omega turbulence model. The numerical results are validated with existing experimental data. Detailed flow physics and their contributions on ejector performance are detected to compare both single-stage and two-stage ejectors. The performance improvement on the ejector-diffuser system is discussed in terms of the mass flux ratio and the coefficient of power.

  • Acute toxicity test and behavioral change analysis of seawater acclimated Japanese medaka were conducted to identify the brine effects on fish by seawater desalination. 7 day acute toxicity test of brine revealed linear concentration-response relationship from 40.0~80.0 psu treatment groups. There was no significant brine effect for 30-40 psu groups and mass mortality was observed from >50 psu exposure (7-day $LC_{50}$=51.4 psu). Images from the real time camera system were analyzed to observe the changes in behavioral patterns of medaka exposed to various salinity. 40.0 and 50.0 psu exposed groups were stabilized in behavioral patterns after 3.1 and 4.6 hours, respectively and 60.0 psu group showed sharp increase in activity during first 12 hours and 50% mortality thereafter. Similar patterns were observed to 70 and 80 psu groups and both experimental groups showed 100% mortality within 12 hours. Acute toxicity test and behavioral patterns showed very similar toxicity results which revealed the increases in mortality and behavioral activities from 50.0 psu. This critical salinity for fish impacts must be implemented to brine discharge strategy by seawater desalination into the coastal area. Also, we recommend that real time camera monitoring system must be a useful tool for early warning of fish toxicity for other applications. • The trade-off studies in the concept development stage to assess the relative goodness of alternative systems concepts for AE (architect engineering) design for the Barge Mounted SMR (BMSMR) is introduced. With respect to design margin, system performance, schedule and risk, the design selection is cond ucted using the following characteristics; barge mobility, system safety under the natural disaster (seismic), power output, interfacing with the other system, and the additional supporting functions as desalination. There are three findings that should be remedied; deficiencies in the assumed characteristics of the system being modeled, deficiencies in the test model, and excessively stringent system requirements. This study is performed using systems engineering approach with trade off matrix method. In order to execute this work, concept development stage is divided into three (3) phases as NA (needs analysis), CE (concept exploration), and CD (concept definition).

  • Polyamide reverse osmosis (RO) membrane with thin film composite structure was commercialized for seawater desalination process. Recently, it has been reported that some RO processes for high pressure and recovery leads to reducing in energy cost and pretreatment scale compared with earlier process. The development of energy recovery, pumping device and RO elements with high pressure and rejection made high pressure and recovery process possible. In this study, permeation properties of commercialized seawater RO membrane were investigated under the condition of high pressure and recovery. In the RO sheet membrane test 3.5% NaCl of synthetic seawater was used. The synthetic seawater contained only sodium chloride. In the RO module test, natural seawater was used at Happo Bay, Masan city. As the results, RO membrane with high durability of pressure was better than that with high rejection of seawater for high pressure and recovery process. Seawater rejection of high concentrate tends to be improved by high pressure operation.
