As a public transportation possible to convey a large quantity, the railway is safe and keeps time, but it has hazards to cause a disaster if the accidents such as collision, derailment, and fire occur. So advanced countries carry out System Safety Plan with various program activities which have connected orders to maintain or improve safety level by finding hazards, evaluation, taking measures and practice, and improving problems. Especially they systematically manage hazards to cause railway accidents and the factors which possibly threat safety, using national classification of risk and causes with analysis of the related data such as establishing accident/incident data and safety regulations/standards. As executing railway safety regulations, domestic railway is currently trying to improve railway safety management system. The research of classification system of accidents/incidents is one thing to make railway safety management systems better. In this research, we reviewed hazardous factors of railway systems and classification of the causes as the beginning of system safety management, and we conducted study on development of railway accident classification based on findings of this research. The results are able to be used in identifying hazards and activities of systemic safety management at the step of railway accident report and investigation.

Subgrade differential settlement of high-speed railways was a pivotal issue that could increase the risk of trains operation. The risk will be further increased when trains in the subsidence zone are affected by crosswinds. In this paper, the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model and finite element (FE) model were established, and the data transmission interface of the two models was established by fluid-solid interaction (FSI) method to form a systematic crosswind-train-track-subgrade dynamic model. The risk of high-speed train encountering crosswind in settlement area was analyzed. The results showed that the aerodynamic force of the trains increased significantly with the increase in crosswind speed. The aerodynamic force of the trains could reach 125.14 kN, significantly increasing the risk of derailment and overturning. Considering the influence of crosswind, the risk of train operation could be greatly increased. The safety indices and the wheel-rail force both increased with the increase of the wind speed. For the high-speed train running at 350 km/h, the warning value of wind speed was 10.2 m /s under the condition of subgrade settlement with wavelength of 20 m and amplitude of 15 mm.
This study presented quantitative risk analysis in case of transporting explosive materials by railway. Accident types were classified into accidents of in station and in transit. And the study presented an initial value of accident frequency through derailment accident and crushing one according to each type, and drew the results of accident frequency through event tree analysis. Damage impact evaluation used TNT equivalent method and probit analysis method. As the result of risk evaluation, railway transportation of explosive materials passing through areas which are high in population density is appeared to be able to cause a large number of personnel injury when occurring accidents. Specially, the accident of explosive transportation combined with petroleum was forecasted as easily resulting in large explosive accident. Consequently, there is a necessity to reduce consequences by decreasing passage through areas where are high in population density, and take measures for lessening the risks in case of transporting dangerous explosive materials.

As a new type of vibration reduction, the ladder track system has been successfully used in engineering. In this paper, a numerical model of the train-track-viaduct system is established to study the dynamic responses of an elevated bridge with ladder track. The system is composed of a vehicle submodel, a track submodel and a bridge submodel, with the measured track irregularities as the system self-excitation. The whole time histories of a train running through an elevated bridge with $3{\times}27m$ continuous PC box girders are simulated. The dynamic responses of the bridge such as deflections, lateral and vertical accelerations, and the vehicle responses such as derailment factors, offload factors and car-body accelerations are calculated. The calculated results are partly validated through the comparison with the experimental data. Compared to the common slab track, adapting the ladder sleeper can effectively reduce the accelerations of the bridge girder, and also reduce the car-body accelerations and offload factors of the train vehicle.

Damage often occurs on the surface of railway wheel by wheel-rail contact fatigue. It should be removed before reaching wheel failure, because wheel failure can cause derailment with loss of life and property. The increase or decrease of the contact fatigue life by the metal removal of the contact surface were shown by many researchers, but it has not explained precisely why fatigue life increases or decreases. In this study, the effect of metal removal depth on the contact fatigue life for railway wheel has been evaluated by applying finite element analysis. It has been revealed that the residual stress and the plastic flow are the main factors determining the fatigue life. The railway wheel has the initial residual stress formed during the manufacturing process, and the residual stress is changed by thermal stress induced by braking. It has been found that the initial residual stress determines the amount of metal removal depth. Also, the effects of the initial residual stress and metal removal on the contact fatigue lift has been estimated, and an equation is proposed to decide the optimal metal removal depth for maximizing the contact fatigue life.

Some bogie frames manufactured in 1999, 2000 year have the fatal problem. Three or four years later, the cracked end beam among them have discovered in 2002, 2003 year. The crack situation of the end beam have a bad effect on brake system. In that case, the cars would be in danger of derailment. To improve the end beam, a research of covering the whole field of welded type bogie frame was started. Main line real tests were performed at Young-Dong line. The stress of main positions for bogie frame was measured. Also up-down direction and left-right direction vibration acceleration of the bogie frame were measured. At this time the tests were performed for the three types bogie. The test result concludes that the crack cause of the end beam is not brake load but vibration at running mainly. It is estimated that the life of the improved car which end beam reinforced is safe within the car permitted life(25 years). The improvement methods of the end beam are presented by construction modification, parts modification. The integrity evaluation is inspected by analysis the real line test results, the improvement methods of the end beam.

Computer simulation is essential to design the suspension elements of railway vehicle. By computer simulation, engineers can assess the feasibility of the given design factors and change them to get a better design. But if one wishes to perform complex analysis on the simulation, such as railway vehicle dynamic, the computational time can become overwhelming. Therefore, many researchers have used a surrogate model that has a regression model performed on a data sampling of the simulation. In general, metamodels(surrogate model) take the form y($\chi$)=f($\chi$)+$\varepsilon$, where y($\chi$) is the true output, f($\chi$) is the metamodel output, and is the error. In this paper, a second order polynomial equation is used as the RSM(response surface model) for high speed train that have twenty-nine design variables and forty-six responses. After the RSM is constructed, multi-objective optimal solutions are achieved by using a nonlinear programming method called VMM(variable matric method) This paper shows that the RSM is a very efficient model to solve the complex optimization problem.
Recently, the weight of train is decreased by using the light material for improvement in energy efficiency. And the length of whole train is more increased for mass transportation of passengers and cargo. However, decrease of the weight and increase of the length of train can cause the train to be overturned or derailed by strong crosswind. In case of Korean Tilting Train eXpress (TTX), the situation can be more severe. TTX will be developed for a quasi-high speed train at 200km/h speed rate and operated on the existing tracks. Moreover, the weight of TTX will be much less than that of conventional train. It is supposed that TTX will be very sensitive to crosswind. In this paper, numerical analysis is used to investigate aerodynamic characteristics around TTX and obtain the induced lateral force by crosswind. After calculating derailment coefficient and overturning coefficient using numerical results, the crosswind safety of TTX is judged. This paper will be good data for judging crosswind safety of TTX.

By computer simulation, engineers can assess the feasibility of a given design factors and change them to get a better design. But if one wishes to perform complex analysis on the simulation, such as railway vehicle dynamic, the computational time can become overwhelming. Damage often occurs on the surface of railway wheels due to wheel-rail contact fatigue. It should be removed before reaching wheel failure, because wheel failure can cause derailment with loss of life and property. The increase or decrease of the contact fatigue lift by the metal removal of the contact surface were investigated by many researchers, but they have not considered initial residual stress and traction force. The railway wheel has the initial residual stress formed during the manufacturing process, and the residual stress is changed by thermal stress induced by braking. The traction force and residual stress are operated on wheels of locomotive and electric motor vehicle. In this study, the effect of metal removal depth on the contact fatigue life for a railway wheel has been evaluated by applying lolling contact fatigue test. The effect of the traction force and metal removal on the contact fatigue life has been estimated by finite element analysis. It has been found that the initial residual stress determines the amount of metal removal depth if the traction coefficient is less than 0.15. If the traction coefficient is greater than 0.2, however, the amount of metal removal depth is independent on the intial residual stress.
