  • Transient magnetic diffusion process in a melt-cast BSCCO-2212 tube is analyzed by an analytical method. The transient diffusion partial differential equation is transformed into an ordinary differential equation by integral method. The penetration depth of magnetic field into a superconducting tube is obtained by solving the differential equation numerically. The results show that the penetration depth as a function of time which is somewhat different from the results by Bean's critical state model. The reason of the difference between the present results and that of Bean's model is discussed and compared in this paper.

  • This study is to investigate the optimum conditions of Nd:YAG laser beam welding for Zircaloy-4 end cap closure by optical fiber transmission. Laser welding parameters which affect the penetration depth and bead width were experimentally examined using the various beam radius by the beam quality analyzer, joint geometries of end cap and the laser parameters which mean pulse width, repetition rate and pulse energy. Also, an optimum welding speed and the effect of assistant gas with varying the flow rate of He were investigated. We found that the laser average power for the end cap welding will be 230W and rotation speed must not exceed 8 RPM, the best position of focus using optical fiber with 600.mu.m will be 2 to 3mm below the surface of the material.

  • This paper assesses the structural performance (force-slip response, slip modulus, and failure modes) of a CLT-concrete composite by conducting fifteen push-out test specimens. In addition, non-linear 3D finite element analysis was also developed to simulate the load-slip behavior of the CLT-concrete specimens under shear load. All 15 test specimens simulating the effect of concrete thickness, connection angle and penetration depth with four different shear connector types were built and tested to evaluate the flexural performance. Experimental results show that the maximum shear capacity for the composite action is obtained when the fixing angle is $90^{\circ}$ and the penetration depth of 95mm for SC normal screw was used to achieve ductile failure compared to other shear connectors.

  • Deicing salt has been generally used for traffic safety in winter, and the amount is increasing every year. However, deicing salt may induce the decrease of bond strength, surface scaling, and environmental pollution, etc. the purpose of this paper is to suggest the fundamental data on safety and durability for concrete structures through the estimation of chloride concentration profile and chloride diffusion coefficient. According to the test results, the critical chloride concentration($0.9\~1.2kg/m^3$)was measured at depth $23\~30mm$, and the limit chloride concentration($0.3kg/m^3$)was reached to depth 40mm. Also the surface chloride amount indicates 3.45kg per concrete unit weight, and the results showed the possibility of corrosion by deicing salt penetration.

  • Because algal cells are so efficient at absorbing incoming light energy, providing more light energy to photobioreactors would simply decrease energy conversion efficiency. Furthermore, the algal biomass productivity in photobioreactor is always proportional to the total photosynthetic rate. In order to optimize the productivity of algal photobioreactors (PBRs), the oxygen production rate should be estimated. Based on a simple model of light penetration depth and algal photosynthesis, the oxygen production rate in high-density microalgal cultures could be calculated. The estimated values and profiles of oxygen production rate by this model were found to be in accordance with the experimental data. Optimal parameters for PBR operations were also calculated using the model.

  • High power laser beams are used in a wide variety of materials processing applications such as cutting, welding, drilling and surface treatment. The CO$\sub$2/ laser is increasingly used in laser beam welding because of the highly potential advantages. High power laser welding is a high energy density, no filler metals and low heat input process to join metals. As the comparison with the conventiona welding, precision work and good fit-up to join the metals are required and maintenance is expensive at present. The principal variables of laser beam welding are the laser beam power, travel speed and bean spot size. The penetration depth during laser beam welding is directly related to the power density of the laser beam. Generally, for a constant beam size, the penetration depth increases with increasing laser beam power.

  • The thermoacoustic refrigerator bas not only considerable possibility but also commercial usability, because it bas high reliability, lower vibration, no moving part, and can easily be constructed. In this study, the resonance characteristics of the thermoacoustic refrigerator were investigated for better performance, varying length of the resonance tube to 400mm, 500mm, 600mm, 700mm. In order to determine the optimum resonance tube length and the frequency, the $\lambda/4$ thermoacoustic engine and the similar apparatus of Wheatly type refrigerator were constructed. It was used air as a coolant. in the fifth harmonic, it was taken the highest ${\Delta}t$ that was $56.3^{\circ}C$ at 626Hz in 400mm tube with 40mm stack.

In this study, the resonance characteristics of the thermoacoustic refrigerator were investigated for better performance, varying the length of Resonant Tube to 400mm $\sim850mm$. • An amplitude modulation technique for increasing the laser penetration efficiency for metals has been studied. By chopping electro-optically Nd:YAG laser pulse, the threshold energy for reliable hole drilling was decreased significantly and the penetration depth was increased. It was observed that the effect of chopping was optimal at 8-12 kHz with 60% duty cycle. It is believed that this improvement is due to an increase in the vapor recoil pressure and reduced plasma screening.
