Characterization of Poly(lactic acid) Foams Prepared with Supercritical Carbon Dioxide (초임계 이산화탄소를 이용하여 제조한 Poly(lactic acid) 발포체의 특성 분석)

  • The foams of a poly(lactic acid) modified by the reactive compounding were produced with the batch foaming technique using supercritical $CO_2(scCO_2)$. Experiments were performed at $105{\sim}135^{\circ}C$ and 12~24 MPa. The blowing ratio and foam structure were significantly affected by changing the temperature and pressure conditions in the foaming process. The blowing ratio first increased with increasing foaming temperature and saturation pressure, reached a maximum and then decreased with a further increase in the foaming temperature and saturation pressure. Decreasing the rate of depressurization permitted a longer period of cell growth and therefore larger microcellular structures were obtained.

  • The foaming of poly(butylene succinate) (PBS) using supercritical $CO_2(scCO_2)$ was studied. In order to improve the melt strength, PBS was modified using the reactive compounding technique. Rapid decompression of $scCO_2$-saturated PBS at a temperature above the depressed $T_m$ yielded expanded microcellular foams. The resulting foam structure could be controlled by manipulating process conditions. Experiments varying the foaming temperature while holding other variables constant showed that higher temperatures produced larger cells and reduced cell densities. Higher saturated pressures led to higher nucleation densities and smaller cell sizes. Decreasing the rate of depressurization permitted a longer period of cell growth and therefore larger cells were obtained.

  • An experiment of rapid pressurization-induced crack propagation of solid propellant was conducted by using a windowed test chamber. A pre-cracked specimen of solid propellant is installed in the chamber, and highly compressed nitrogen gas in a accumulator pressurizes the chamber until the chamber pressure reaches set-up pressure to make the chamber depressurization. Pressure-time trace was obtained from the experimental result, and pressurization rate was defined from the trace. In this study, three pressurization rates (64.34, 73.86 and 85.44 MPa/s) are considered, and propagation lengths are measured. Also, a progression of the crack propagation recorded by a high-speed digital camera is presented.

Experimental study on the condensation of sonic steam in the underwater environment

  • Steam jet condensation is of great importance to pressure suppression containment and automatic depressurization system in nuclear power plant. In this paper, the condensation processes of sonic steam jet in a quiescent subcooled pool are recorded and analyzed, more precise understanding are got in direct contact condensation. Experiments are conducted at atmospheric pressure, and the steam is injected into the subcooled water pool through a vertical nozzle with the inner diameter of 10 mm, water temperature in the range of $25-60^{\circ}C$ and mass velocity in the range of $320-1080kg/m^2s$. Richardson number is calculated based on the conservation of momentum for single water jet and its values are in the range of 0.16-2.67. There is no thermal stratification observed in the water pool. Four condensation regimes are observed, including condensation oscillation, contraction, expansion-contraction and double expansion-contraction shapes. A condensation regime map is present based on steam mass velocity and water temperature. The dimensionless steam plume length increase with the increase of steam mass velocity and water temperature, and its values are in the range of 1.4-9.0. Condensation heat transfer coefficient decreases with the increase of steam mass velocity and water temperature, and its values are in the range of $1.44-3.65MW/m^2^{\circ}C$. New more accurate semi-empirical correlations for prediction of the dimensionless steam plume length and condensation heat transfer coefficient are proposed respectively. The discrepancy of predicted plume length is within ${\pm}10%$ for present experimental results and ${\pm}25%$ for previous researchers. The discrepancy of predicted condensation heat transfer coefficient is with ${\pm}12%$.

  • In the case of high-energy line breaks in nuclear power plants, supersonic steam jet is formed due to the rapid depressurization. The steam jet can cause impingement load on the adjacent structures, piping systems and components. In order to secure the design integrity of the nuclear power plant, it is necessary to evaluate the load characteristics of the steam jet generated by high-energy pipe rupture. In the design process of nuclear power plant, jet impingement load evaluation was usually performed based on ANSI/ANS 58.2. However, U.S. NRC recently pointed out that ANSI/ANS 58.2 oversimplifies the jet behavior and that some assumptions are non-conservative. In addition, it is recommended that dynamic analysis techniques should be applied to consider transient load characteristics. Therefore, it is necessary to establish an evaluation methodology that can analyze the dynamic load characteristics of steam jet ejected when high energy pipe breaks. This research group has developed and validated the CFD analysis methodology to evaluate the transient behavior of supersonic impinging jet in the previous study. In this study, numerical study on the transient load characteristics of supersonic steam jet impingement was carried out and amplitude and frequency analysis of transient jet load was performed.

  • In this study, shape design and material selection were carried out for a two-stage pressure-reducing regulator to compensate for the shortcomings of a one-stage mechanical decompression regulator. The shape of the contact surface of the depressurization unit was considered, material was selected, and the shape was designed to compensate for the pulsation and slow response through the two-stage decompression and to solve the problem of high pressure deviation. In terms of airtightness, the deformation amount of TPU showed a small amount of displacement of up to 15.82%. Considering the fact that it is applicable to various hydrogen fuel supply systems by securing universality by applying electronic solenoids to the second pressure reduction, magnetic materials were selected. The hydrogen embrittlement and corrosion resistance were evaluated to verify the plating process. Surface corrosion did not occur in only the case of Cr plating. The elongation during the corrosion process was compared using a tensile test, and there was a difference within 2%.

  • The loss of coolant accident based on a double-ended cold leg break is analyzed with the discharge coefficient (Ca) of 0.4. This analysis covers the whole transient period from the start of depressurization to the complete refilling of the core by using RELAP4/MOD6-EM and RELAP4/ MOD6-HOT CHANNEL for the system thermal-hydraulics and the fuel performance during the blowdown phase respectively, and RELAP4/MOD6-FLOOD and TOODEE2 during the reflood phase. A simple analytical method has been developed to account for the lower plenum filling by approximating steam-water countercurrent flows and superheated wall effects at the downcomer during the refill period. Based on the informations. at the time of EOB (end-of-bypass), the refill duration time and the initial reflooding temperature were estimated and compared with the results from the RELAP4/MOD6, resulting in a good agreement. In addition, some parametric studies on the EOB were performed. The form loss coefficient between upper head and upper downcomer was found to be sensitive to the occurrence of the spurious EOB. Appropriate form loss coefficients should be taken into account to avoid the flow oscillations at the downcomer. The analyses with the six and three volume core nodalizations, respectively, show much similar trends in the system thermal-hydraulic performance, but the former case is recommended to obtain good results.

Comparison Of CATHARE2 And RELAP5/MOD3 Predictions On The BETHSY 6.2% TC Small-Break Loss-Of-Coolant Experiment (CATHARE2와 RELAP5/MOD3를 이용한 BETHSY 6.2 TC 소형 냉각재상실사고 실험결과의 해석)

  • Best-estimate thermal-hydraulic codes, CATHARE2 V1.2 and RELAP5/MOD3, hate been assessed against the BETHSY 6.2 tc six-inch cold leg break loss-of-coolant accident (LOCA) test. Main objective is to analyze the overall capabilities of the two codes on physical phenomena of concern during the small break LOCA i.e. two-phase critical flow, depressurization, core water level de-pression, loop seal clearing, liquid holdup, etc. The calculation results show that the too codes predict well both in the occurrences and trends of major two-phase flow phenomena observed. Especially, the CATHARE2 calculations show better agreements with the experimental data. However, the two codes, in common, show some deviations in the predictions of loop seal clearing, collapsed core water level after the loop seal clearing, and accumulator injection behaviors. The discrepancies found from the comprision with the experimental data are larger in the RELAP5 results than in the CATHARE2. To analyze the deviations of the two code predictions in detail, several sensitivity calculations have been performed. In addition to the change of two-phase discharge coefficients for the break junction, fine nodalization and some corrections of the interphase drag term are made. For CATHARE2, the change of interphase drag force improves the mass distribution in the primary side. And the prediction of SG pressure is improved by the modification of boundary conditions. For RELAP5, any single input change doesn't improve the whole result and it is found that the interphase drag model has still large uncertainties.

Study on Cavitation Noise Predictions for an Elliptic Wing (타원형 날개에 대한 공동소음 예측 연구)

  • Depressurization occurs around underwater objects moving at high speeds. This causes cavitation nuclei to expand, resulting in cavitation. Cavitation is accompanied by an increase in noise and vibration at the site, particularly in the case of thrusters, and this has a detrimental ef ect on propulsion performance. Therefore, predicting cavitation is necessary. In this study, an analytical method for cavitation noise is developed and applied to an elliptic wing. First, computational fluid dynamics are performed to obtain information about the flow fields around the wing. Then, through the cavitation nuclei density function, number of cavitation nuclei is calculated using the initial radius of the nuclei and nuclei are randomly placed in the upstream with large pressure drop around the wing tip. Bubble dynamics are then applied to each nucleus using a Lagrangian approach for noise analysis and to determine cavitation behavior. Cavitation noise is identified as having the characteristics of broadband noise. Verification of analytical method is performed by comparing experimental results derived from the large cavitation tunnel at the Korea Research Institute of Ships & Ocean Engineering.

A Study on the Influence Diagrams for the Application to Containment Performance Analysis (격납용기 성능해석을 위한 영향도에 관한 연구)

  • Influence diagram method is applied to containment performance analysis of Young-Gwang 3&4 in an effort to overcome some drawbacks of current containment performance analysis method. Event tee methodology has been adopted as a containment performance analysis method. There are, however, some drawbacks on event tree methodology. This study is to overcome three major drawbacks of the current containment performance analysis method : 1) Event tree cannot express dependency between events explicitly. 2) Accident Progression Event Tree (APET) cannot represent entire containment system. 3) It is difficult to consider decision making problem. To resolve these problems, influence diagrams, is proposed. In the present ok, the applicability of the influence diagrams has been demonstrated for YGN 3&4 containment performance analysis and accident management strategy assessments of this study are in good agreement with those of YGN 3&4 IPE. Sensitivity analysis has been peformed to identify relative important variables for each early containment failure, late containment and basemat melt-though. In addition, influence diagrams are used to assess two accident management strategies : 1) RCS depressurization, 2) cavity flooding. It is shown that influence diagrams can be applied to the containment performance analysis.
