  • Purpose: This study was conducted to identify the effects of a convergent web-based educational program on cognitive function, depression, and dementia prevention behavior among elders living in the community. Method: Participants were 16 elders over 65 years of age (8 in the experimental group and 8 in the control group). The educational program was given twice a week for 9 weeks. Results: Cognitive function and dementia prevention behavior improved in the experimental group. Cognitive function and dementia prevention behavior were reduced in the control group compared to the results of the pre-inspection; however, no statistically significant difference was found. As homogeneity test was not conducted previously for the assessment of depression, the assessment was conducted based on covariates, Although no significant difference found between the two groups, depression level did increase in the control group. Conclusion: Findings from this study indicate that the educational program prevented worsening of depression and was effective in reducing depression. For further assessment, it is necessary to conduct long-term research including a revision and supplementation of the contents and length of the program.

  • Objectives : The aim of this research is to determine the effects of depression and anxiety symptoms of schizophrenic psychopathology on the HPA axis. Methods : Twenty patients with schizophrenia were included and divided into the medication non-exposed group(n = 10) and the medication exposed group(n = 10). Evaluated scales were the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale(PANSS), Scale for the Assessment of Negative Symptoms(SANS), Scale for the Assessment of Positive Symptoms(SAPS), Hamilton Depression Inventory(HAM-D) and Hamilton Anxiety Inventory (HAM-A), and then the combined Dexamethasone/Corticotropin Releasing Hormone(DEX/CRH) test was conducted to determine the basal level, the peak level and the area under the curve(AUC) of cortisol and adrenocorticotropic hormone(ACTH). Results : When the correlations between each psychopathology and cortisol level or ACTH AUC value were analyzed, HAM-D showed a negative correlation, whereas HAM-A showed a positive correlation. Also, the non-depression group(HAM-D ${\leq}$ 18) showed higher cortisol and ACTH concentrations than the depression group(HAM-D > 18), and the anxiety group(HAM-A ${\geq}$ 14) showed significantly higher concentrations than the non-anxiety group(HAM-D < 14)(p < 0.05). Also, as for the comparison between the medication non-exposed group and the medication exposed group, the non-exposed group showed significantly higher cortisol and ACTH concentration than exposed group(p < 0.05). Conclusion : This study suggest that anxiety symptoms rather than depression symptoms are related to the increased activity of the HPA axis of schizophrenics.

  • Objctives: This study purposed to examine the intention to participate in the preventive program of depression of Internet user and to offer the baseline data for development of mental health promotion program. Methods: The internet survey was performed using a self-reported questionnaire on intention to participate in the preventive program of depression, depressive symptom(with Zung's SDS) and so forth from 1,000 internet user (aged $13{\sim}49$ years) via two web sites at Feb($1st{\sim}10th$), 2006. We analyzed the intention to participate in preventive program of depression and the factors related with that intention by depressive level. Results: In the normal group, the intention to participate in a preventive program of depression was influenced significantly by counselling experience(s) on depression(p<.001), and perceived control(p<.001) over the barriers to participation in the preventive program of depression, and marginally by gender. In the depressive group, the smoking habit revealed marginal effect(p=.051) and perceived control over the barriers to participation in the preventive program of depression influenced on that intention significantly(p<.001). Conclusion: Among internet users, especially the solutions of barriers to participate in the preventive program of depression is more important at the intervention program for prevention of depression. In the normal group, we need to consider the use of messages tailored by counselling experience(s) on depression. Some intervention program dealing with two subjects, smoking cessation and prevention of depression concurrently, will be appropriate for the depressive group.

  • Objectives : This study aimed to compare the characteristics of suicide attempts among Korean patients with mixed and non-mixed depression. Methods : Patients who visited the emergency room due to a suicide attempt and participated in the Korean Cohort for the Model Predicting a Suicide and Suicide-related Behavior study were included. Using the Montgomery-Asberg Depression Rating Scale (MADRS) and Young Mania Rating Scale (YMRS), 111 patients were classified into the mixed depression (n=46) and non-mixed depression groups (n=65). The Koukopoulos Mixed Depression Rating Scale (KMDRS) score was calculated using the MADRS and YMRS scores. Suicide attempt characteristics were evaluated using the Columbia Suicidal Severity Rating Scale (C-SSRS) and Suicide Intent Scale (SIS). Results : In the mixed depression group, the reason item among the ideation intensity score of the C-SSRS was higher, and the deterrent item score was lower. Scores on the timing and suicide note items of the SIS were higher, and scores for overt communication items were lower in the mixed depression group. The KMDRS score was positively correlated with the C-SSRS ideation intensity and total SIS score. After adjusting for additional variables, the KMDRS scores had a significant effect on the C-SSRS ideation intensity and total SIS scores. Conclusions : The mixed depression group showed a difference in the intensity of suicidal ideation and suicidal intention compared to those in the non-mixed depression group. The overall suicidal ideation intensity and suicidal intention increased according to the degree of mixed depression.
